Incidencia de La Doble Presencia en Madres de Familia del Mercado 27 De Febrero, Cuenca, Ecuador y su efecto en El Bienestar Psicosocial. Año 2025
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-27) Barrera Lazo, Kevin Eduardo; Morocho Sinchi, Luis Alexander; Correa Astudillo, María Augusta
This research analyzes the impact of double presence on the psychosocial well-being of mothers who engage in commercial activities at the 27 de Febrero Market in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, during the year 2025. Double presence is understood as the coexistence of paid work responsibilities with domestic and caregiving tasks, a situation that constitutes a psychosocial risk for women. The study was conducted using a quantitative approach with a descriptive and cross-sectional design and included a sample of 158 merchant mothers selected through simple random probabilistic sampling. Data collection was carried out using the Adapted Questionnaire for the Measurement of Double Presence, which made it possible to analyze dimensions related to household workload, simultaneous mental presence, family coordination, emotional health, self-care, and work–family conflict. The results show that double presence has negative effects on the psychosocial well-being of merchant mothers, mainly reflected in high levels of stress, physical and emotional exhaustion, as well as limitations in self-care and work–life balance. It is concluded that double presence is a determining factor affecting the quality of life of merchant mothers, highlighting the need to implement strategies focused on shared responsibility, strengthening support networks, and promoting more equitable social and working conditions.

Relapse in patients with addictions is a complex and persistent phenomenon that poses a significant challenge to rehabilitation and social reintegration processes. This issue is influenced by multiple factors, including individual characteristics, family conflicts, and a social environment of substance use, which affect the patient’s stability after completing treatment. The objective of this study was to determine the psychosocial factors that contribute to relapse in patients aged 26 to 40 with substance addictions at the Rest and Addiction Center of the Humberto Ugalde Camacho Psychiatric Hospital in Cuenca, from a Social Work perspective. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological design was applied, using semi-structured interviews conducted with both patients who had experienced relapse and professionals from the center’s multidisciplinary team. Based on the results obtained, a triangulation process was carried out to contrast and deepen the study’s findings. Data were analyzed using ATLAS.ti software to identify emerging patterns and categories. The results show that the absence of emotional support, family conflicts, unemployment, the influence of substance-using friends, exposure to substance-using environments, lack of support networks, and low treatment adherence increase the risk of relapse, while recreational activities, healthy routines, and disease awareness act as protective factors.

Family involvement is a key factor in the academic performance and well-being of adolescents. However, in contexts of parental migration, where one or both parents migrate and delegate the care of their children to other relatives, this bond can be affected. This study aims to analyze the relationship between family involvement and the academic performance of students in the Unified General Baccalaureate program with migrant parents at the Daniel Hermida and Luis Cordero Crespo Educational Units, considering their rural and urban territorial contexts. The research approach is qualitative, phenomenological, and exploratory in scope. The study population consists of 26 high school students with migrant parents and six teacher advisors, divided equally between the two Educational Units. Two techniques were used for data collection: focus groups and interviews. The findings show that within the “Daniel Hermida” Educational Unit there is greater family involvement, primarily through motivation, academic monitoring, and constant communication with teachers. In contrast, at the “Luis Cordero Crespo” Educational Unit, there is repeated absence from meetings, limited support with homework, and restricted communication with the educational institution. Based on these results, strategies were designed to strengthen family involvement, such as the implementation of a training program for legal guardians, as well as strengthening the participation of migrant parents in their children's academic activities.

Estrategias de Subsistencia y el Rol de las Redes de Apoyo de las Personas Adultas Mayores Sin Pensión Jubilar Beneficiarias del Centro Diurno Santo de Asís en Azogues, Cañar - Ecuador, Año 2025
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-10) Guallpa Condo, Daniela Fernanda; Merchán Pacurucu, Camila Dayanna; Duran Oleas, Jenny Catalina
This research, entitled "Subsistence Strategies and the Role of Support Networks for Older Adults Without Retirement Pensions Beneficiaries of the Santo de Asís Day Center in Azogues, Cañar - Ecuador, 2025," identifies the various strategies older adults employ to subsist without the pressure of retirement and the role their support networks play. The target population for this research consists of older adults who are beneficiaries of the Santo de Asís Day Center in Azogues. The methodology employed is a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design of exploratory scope. The data collection technique used was semi-structured interviews, guided by a questionnaire, which were administered to a sample of 15 older adults. The results show that the subsistence strategies employed by older adults without pensions are primarily based on the informal economy and financial assistance from family members. However, faced with insufficient resources, they resort to strategies such as prioritizing food, reducing basic expenses, and seeking family support. A positive finding is that older adults value the support they receive from their support networks, as feeling accompanied generates a sense of joy and tranquility. A negative finding is that community support is limited.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-13) Guaman Saquicela, Katherine Jamileth; Tirado Jarama, Doménica Estefanía; Gutiérrez Molina, Blanca Esperanza
Older adults with disabilities face various systemic barriers that limit their access to health services and directly impact their well-being. In this context, this research aimed to analyze the systemic barriers affecting access to health services for older adults with disabilities in the San Salvador de Cañaribamba parish, Santa Isabel canton, Ecuador, during 2025, as well as to describe their impact on their well-being. The study employed a qualitative approach, with a descriptive-interpretive scope and a phenomenological design. The interview technique was used, employing a semi-structured questionnaire as the instrument. Interviews were conducted with six older adults with disabilities, four family members or caregivers, and six key stakeholders in the health sector, selected through purposive non-probability sampling. The results revealed the presence of systemic barriers at different levels of interaction. At the microsystem level, the following barriers were identified: lack of family support, inadequate infrastructure, and improvised care. At the mesosystem level, communication difficulties were evident between key stakeholders in the health sector and older adults with disabilities, along with limited community participation. At the exosystem level, high transportation costs, a collapsed appointment system, insufficient medical teams, medication shortages, and the distance to health centers were identified. At the macrosystem level, a lack of awareness regarding the rights of older adults and people with disabilities was highlighted. These barriers negatively impact well-being, leading to treatment interruptions and a decline in health status.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-11) Urgilés Gutiérrez , Camila Aracely; Sánchez Loja, Wilson Fernando
Community development management in rural contexts presents numerous complexities that directly impact the actions of community leaders. However, in the rural parish of Santa Ana, no research specifically analyzes the obstacles and challenges these leaders face in carrying out this management. In this context, the objective of this research was to analyze the obstacles and challenges faced by community leaders in managing community development in the parish of Santa Ana, Cuenca canton, Ecuador, during the year 2025. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design, aimed at understanding the experiences and perceptions of community actors. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews, a focus group, and a participatory workshop, using four semi-structured guides as instruments. The sample consisted of 21 community leaders serving as presidents, 21 members of the Social Affairs Commission, and 21 strategic community actors. The results reveal territorial, institutional, and sociocultural obstacles that affect community development management, as well as challenges related to resource mobilization and coordination, the sustainability of community participation, the overload of personal, work, and family responsibilities, and internal organizational dynamics. In conclusion, the findings demonstrate the need to strengthen community development management through technical support and coordinated actions from the technical teams of the parish-level Decentralized Autonomous Governments and other local entities.

Social mobility expectations allude to aspirations or projections individuals have to improve their social standing. In this sense, the purpose of this investigation was to analyze the factors influencing social mobility expectations of senior students at the “Agustín Iglesias” educational institution, located in the rural parish of Ludo, Sígsig canton, Azuay province. To achieve this, the focus group technique was employed with twenty-one students; two focus groups were formed, each with two sessions, in order to characterize their expectations and identify the influencing factors, based on Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological Theory. The results reveal that among adolescents' expectations, immediate labor insertion and migration emerge as a support mechanism, displacing educational expectations. Likewise, it was identified that these expectations are conditioned by structural restrictions linked to their immediate environments. Notable factors include the economic situation of the family group (microsystem), early labor exposure (mesosystem), lack of academic and labor opportunities in their local community (exosystem), and the lack of knowledge regarding public policies (macrosystem).

Relación entre la Autonomía Funcional y Funcionalidad Familiar en Adultos Mayores de la Parroquia Rural de Sinincay, Cuenca, Ecuador, año 2025
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-10) Guartazaca Albarracín, Maritza Jackeline; Toalongo Ponce, Dayanna Priscila; Sánchez Loja, Wilson Fernando
Population aging is a growing demographic phenomenon in Ecuador, with particularly pronounced impacts in rural areas, where youth migration, poverty, and limited service coverage increase the risks of functional dependency and isolation among older adults. While previous studies have linked functional autonomy and family dynamics, a lack of quantitative evidence persists in Andean rural contexts. To address this gap, this research analyzed the relationship between functional autonomy and family functioning in 80 older adults from the "Priority Care Project for Older Adults" in the rural parish of Sinincay, Cuenca, in 2025. Using a quantitative, descriptive-correlational, and cross-sectional design, the Barthel Index and the Family APGAR scale were applied, and the data were analyzed using SPSS. The results showed that 71.3% perceived their family as functional, and the majority presented high levels of autonomy, although 38.8% reported moderate dependency. No statistically significant correlation was found between the two variables (ρ = 0.138), suggesting that they are mediated by biopsychosocial and contextual factors. This underscores the need for comprehensive social work interventions to promote dignified aging in rural settings.

Estigmatización de las Comerciantes Informales de la Federación de Comerciantes Minoristas del Azuay en el Mercado El Arenal, Cuenca - Ecuador, 2025. Un Análisis desde Trabajo Social
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-10) Torres Salinas, Katherine Lisseth; Mendieta Orellana, Mónica Elisabeth
Women's informal trade in Latin America constitutes a survival strategy for millions of women facing structural stigmatization. This research analyzes the experiences of intersectional stigmatization among women informal vendors affiliated with the Federation of Retail Merchants of Azuay (FEDACOMI) at El Arenal Market, Cuenca, Ecuador, 2025, identifying how factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, class, and migratory status intensify these experiences. The study adopts a critical-inductive qualitative approach with a phenomenological-ethnographic design, complemented by descriptive statistical analysis of the institutional database (590 FEDACOMI members, 251 from El Arenal Market) for sociodemographic characterization. Through purposive sampling, three techniques were applied: database analysis processed in Excel, five in-depth focused interviews, and non-participant ethnographic observation over seven weeks, recording 20 significant situations. Additionally, a focus group with eight participants was conducted to describe resistance strategies. Qualitative data were processed using Atlas.ti version 9. Results revealed that vendors experience intersectional stigmatization intensified by the convergence of multiple oppressions that reinforce their social exclusion and structural violence. In response, they develop strategies based on support networks, collective organization, and resignification of their work, sustaining their dignity and identity in contexts of profound inequality. The study contributes situated knowledge about intersectional dimensions of stigmatization in intermediate urban contexts, making visible the voices of historically marginalized women as social actors with capacity for agency and resistance.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-10) Chávez Heras, Johnny Armando; Ochoa Balarezo, Juana Virginia
The present research titled Family Co-responsibility in the Care of Older Adults Linked to the San Vicente de Paúl Association, Santa Isabel Canton, Ecuador, Year 2025, identified the absence of family co-responsibility in the care of older adults as the central problem, which affects their well-being and violates their fundamental rights, specifically the right to a dignified life, personal integrity, and a life free from violence. The general objective consisted of analyzing the practices of family co-responsibility in the care of older adults of the San Vicente de Paúl Association, in Santa Isabel, Ecuador, during the year 2025. A methodology with a qualitative approach, phenomenological design, and descriptive scope was used, and data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews applied to seventeen participants, including older adults, family members, and volunteers. The results evidenced that co-responsibility practices were mostly instrumental and economic, guaranteeing subsistence; however, marked affective deficiencies were identified, which the Association compensated for through accompaniment; it was concluded that family co-responsibility practices proved to be insufficient, demonstrating that the fulfillment of material needs does not guarantee a dignified old age if emotional abandonment and the lack of human warmth persist.

Factores Familiares de Riesgo Asociados a Casos de Negligencia en Niños, Niñas y Adolescentes en la Junta Cantonal de Protección de Derechos de Gualaceo, Azuay – Ecuador, año 2024
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-06) Remache Barbecho, Jennifer Nayely; Cárdenas Yánez, Nancy Susana
Violence is a social phenomenon that manifests itself in various spheres, especially within the family, where it takes forms such as abuse and neglect. The latter is characterized as the systematic disregard by parents for the basic needs of their children, generating various implications for their overall development. In this context, the general objective of this research is to determine the family risk factors associated with cases of neglect of children and adolescents received by the Gualaceo Cantonal Board for the Protection of Rights, in the province of Azuay, during 2024. The research adopts a quantitative approach and a descriptive, cross-sectional, and non-experimental design. Data collection was carried out using a quantitative technique of secondary data collection through the physical filing of case files. Therefore, 53 case files in which neglect was detected were reviewed. The results show that parental neglect is not solely the responsibility of one parent, but is linked to social structures and realities present in this region. The most prevalent type of neglect identified was physical neglect (70.7%) in children aged 6 to 11, and educational neglect (59.8%) in adolescents aged 12 to 17. Risk factors associated with this problem are directly related to parental characteristics, relationships and changes within the family system, the environments in which they live, and the sociocultural context.

Factores Psicosociales y Estrategias de Afrontamiento en el Cuidado de Personas con Discapacidad del Club de Cuidadores Registrado en el Centro de Salud Tipo A, Cantón Santa Isabel, Ecuador 2025
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Jurisprudencia y Ciencias Políticas y Sociales, 2026-03-10) Gómez Ordóñez, Joan Sebastián; Durán Oleas, Jenny Catalina
This research, entitled "Psychosocial Factors and Coping Strategies in the Care of People with Disabilities in the Registered Caregivers' Club at the Type A Health Center, Santa Isabel Canton, Ecuador, 2025," aimed to analyze the experiences of women caregivers of people with disabilities regarding the psychosocial factors involved in caregiving and the coping strategies they employ. The target population for this study consisted of the members of the Caregivers' Club in the Santa Isabel canton. The methodology employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive scope and a case study design. The techniques used in this research were interviews and focus groups, applied to 13 caregivers. A semi structured questionnaire was used as the data collection instrument. It is concluded that psychosocial factors in the care of people with disabilities are related to the lack of family support, which is characterized by a feminization of the caregiving role. This lack of support generates continuous routines and emotional effects such as stress, exhaustion, anxiety, and feelings of loneliness. On the other hand, it was identified that coping strategies at the individual level include mechanisms for disconnecting and resting; and, at the collective level, the Club acts as a support network that allows for the exchange of knowledge and emotional support, mitigating social isolation and strengthening the well-being of the caregivers.

The present had the objective of analyzing the perceptions of older adults on family co-responsibility in their care, who reside in the urban area of Llacao Parish, in Cuenca, Ecuador, in the year 2024. The methodology used consisted of a qualitative, descriptive and phenomenological research design. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with 12 self-supporting older adults (65-80 years old) selected by convenience. Among the main results, the participants expressed a marked perception of abandonment and little family interest, evidenced by a lack of subsistence, protection, participation and leisure. Four critical problems were identified: insufficient basic support, exclusion in household decisions, limited access to meaningful activities and weakening of care norms. These problems are linked to factors such as the inequitable distribution of roles, the erosion of emotional ties, the difficulty of adapting to sociocultural changes and weak community integration. The overload almost always falls on a single caregiver, generating feelings of loneliness and fragility in older adults. In conclusion: Family co-responsibility in Llacao is perceived as insufficient; strengthening emotional ties, redistributing care tasks equitably and articulating community networks is essential to guarantee active and dignified aging. Family education programs, intergenerational support and community participation are strategic to reverse the cycle of abandonment and improve the quality of life of this population group.

The perception of life among retired older adults often does not receive the adequate attention it deserves. In this sense, the current research aims to understand this perception among retirees who attend the "IESS Senior Care Center" in Cuenca, during the period from September 2023 to February 2024. The methodology employed was based on a qualitative phenomenological approach with an exploratory scope. For data collection, three techniques were used: bibliographic review, in-depth interviews, and a focus group guided by semi-structured questions. The instruments were approved by the corresponding local authority. The Atlas Ti program was used for data analysis. Among the most significant findings, it was identified that retirement represents a complex stage, where many retirees face challenges related to adaptation, such as changes in their daily routine, emotional disturbances, the absence of their children, and economic concerns. However, it was also observed that retirement provides the opportunity to enjoy greater freedom, strengthen family bonds, and explore new personal interests such as hobbies, creative projects, ventures, volunteer work, or travel, which contributes to a better quality of life.

In the world there are several phenomena that affect the well-being of society, for the same reason different methods or strategies have been developed with which they can cope with these crises, such as the disease of alcoholism, which is considered a global public health problem that affects millions of people, this disease in addition to bringing consequences for the health of those who suffer from it, significantly affects their social, work and personal relationships, and which is addressed in this research report. In this sense, the report "Coping Strategies Used by the Families of the Members of the Group of Alcoholics Anonymous "Not One Step Back" for the Prevention of Relapse, Year 2023", aimed to identify the different coping strategies used by the families of the members of an Alcoholics Anonymous group and in this way know how they have tolerated this process and not suffer a relapse. This research had a qualitative approach with a non-experimental phenomenological study design. To do this, the in-depth interview technique was applied based on a guide of questions previously structured; of which the results pointed to three essential coping strategies and the most used within the family nucleus, which were: Social support, avoidance and emotional control. The compilation of information was crucial when covering this problem, since in this way several edges or ways in which individuals seek to face their crisis were known.

The current context presents an accelerated pace of life that complicates the balance between work and family life. This study aimed to analyze the double presence in the administrative staff of the Provincial Decentralized Autonomous Government of Azuay, Ecuador, from a gender perspective in 2024. With a quantitative approach and descriptive design, surveys were applied to 139 officials from various áreas, selected through stratified probabilistic sampling. The “Adapted” Work-Family Interaction Questionnaire was used to collect data on work and family interactions. The findings revealed a high level of security in the positive interaction between family and work, with notable differences between genders in the perception of risk associated with social expectations and family care. Although both genders experience positive interactions, women face greater challenges in balancing their responsibilities. These results suggested the need to implement lines of action that address dual presence and improve working conditions, especially for women, thus promoting a more equitable and healthier environment in the workplace.

The incorporation of women into the labor market has constituted a considerable progress in the search to restructure social constructions, however, despite this insertion, their “responsibility” in the role of main caregiver of the household is not annulled, which has become a significant challenge in trying to balance work and family roles. Therefore, it is important to identify this duality of functions, from an integral approach to both spheres, considering its causes and consequences. This research aims to analyze the reconciliation of work and family roles of civil servant mothers of the General Directorate of Culture, Recreation and Knowledge of the Municipality of Cuenca, in the year 2024 - 2025. The study had a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design and a descriptive level. It was carried out through 7 semi-structured in-depth interviews. The results reveal the perceptions of employed mothers about the duality of roles and reflect the latent difficulty of reconciliation, highlighting the demand for time and resources, whether economic, physical or emotional, that each area requires and the influence of the social system, through the constructions of gender and motherhood.
