Publication Estilos de afrontamiento de padres de niños con fisura labio-alveolo-palatina en los Andes Centrales del Ecuador (Cuenca-Ambato)(2025) Cazar Almache, Marcelo Enrique; Pinos Gavilanes, María Paz; Palacios Coello, Ruth Fabiola; Lucio Bravo, Miriam Alexandra; Quito, María PazPublication Mente y materia: Principios filosóficos para una psicología científica(2025) Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan Felipe; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio EstebanPublication Violencia de género y violencia de pareja en Ecuador: Una revisión sistemática(2025) Miguel Francisco Moreno-Polo; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Briones Arias, Christhye Ionneender-based violence (hereinafter GBV) is a relevant topic at both the normative and cultural levels, with clear repercussions within the practice of social and legal sciences. In Ecuador, figures on gender-based violence against women show that it is related to both intimate partner violence and domestic violence. Given this, the objective of this research was to gather relevant scientific information on GBV in Ecuador over the last 8 years. The databases used were ProQuest, WebofScience, Redalyc, and Dialnet. The PRISMA methodology was used for the review, considering the following search terms: "gender-based violence," "intimate partner violence," "partner violence," "Ecuadorian," and "Ecuador." The inclusion criteria were: scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, scientific articles written in English and Spanish. Scientific articles were located in the Web of Science, ProQuest, Dialnet, and Redalyc databases. Findings revealed that, despite existing regulations in Ecuador, their implementation is insufficient due to an underlying structural problem stemming from cultural situations related to machismo. The findings highlight inadequate implementation of public policies aimed at reducing and eliminating gender-based violence in Ecuador.Publication Responsabilidad legal en el trastorno de la personalidad antisocial(2024) Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan FelipeThis work provides a review of the literature on the legal liability of individuals diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD). In recent years, the legal treatment of psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders, has been the subject of debate due to the complexities associated with accountability in legal contexts. To carry out the review and selection of relevant studies, the PRISMA model criteria were applied to various academic databases. The findings indicate the existence of neuroanatomical alterations that may compromise the volitional capacity of individuals with APD, manifesting in poor impulse control. However, several authors agree that, despite these alterations, these individuals remain fully aware of their actions and their possible consequences when committing a crime, so that the APD diagnosis would not, by itself, imply a justification for reducing their criminal liability. The need to continue advancing in theoretical and methodological development to define an appropriate legal approach in these cases is stressed.Publication Propuesta de metodologías activas para la inclusión étnica en segundo nivel de Bachillerato a través de la fotografía de fiestas populares(2025) Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan Felipe; Guartatanga Coronel, Jorge LuisThe objective of this article is to design an instructive methodological class for teachers, using photographic narratives of festive contexts as a tool to foster inclu-sive identity processes. The research problem centers on the need to implement innovative methodologies that enhance the sense of belonging in diverse educational settings. The methodolog y employed three methods for data analysis: conceptual analysis, which identified the meanings associated with festivities; phenomenological analysis, which explored partici-pants’ experiences with cultural traditions, and narrative analysis, which structured the visual and textual stories collected. From the impact analysis of the class, it is concluded that photographic narrative is an effective resource for strengthening the sense of belonging and promoting educational inclusion, according to students’ perceptions.Publication Cryopreservation of Domestic and Wild Animal Spermatozoa: Update of Knowledge(Intechopen, 2023) Samaniego Campoverde, Jorge Xavier; Galarza Lucero, Diego Andrés; Méndez Álvarez, María Silvana; Duma Pauta, José MauricioCurrent sperm cryopreservation protocols for domestic and wild mammals aim to minimize the cryogenic damage caused by cell dehydration, ice formation, and osmotic stress. The optimization of sperm cryopreservation include the use of different synthetic and nonsynthetic-based extenders supplemented with additives (e.g., egg yolk, coconut water, etc.) and antioxidants (e.g., melatonin, L-carnitine, caffeine, resveratrol, etc.) that protect the plasmalemma, acrosome, and mitochondria against the detrimental effects caused by the cryopreservation process. Furthermore, the use of penetrating (e.g., glycerol, ethylene glycol, dimethylformamide, etc.) and nonpenetrating (e.g., sucrose and trehalose) cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) or their combination should be investigated to protect sperm during the freezing process in slow and ultra-rapid freezing procedures. Finally, new cryopreservation protocols should focus on freezing curves and initial cooling rates that allow optimal dehydration during freezing and adequate hydration during thawing. The suitable interaction of all these factors will allow a sperm subpopulation to survive cryopreservation with integrity and fertilizing capacity, contributing to the improvement of the efficiency of genetic resource management and the development of germplasm banks that support the preservation of genetic diversity in domestic and wild animals. This study examined the mental health among 5,560 residents in 11 countries worldwide at different geographic distances from the epicenter of the Russian-Ukrainian War (RUW). An online questionnaire assessed war-related variables (e.g., personal experiences with RUW, perceived concern and threat), previous life stress experiences, and mental health (i.e., resilience, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, ICD-11 PTSD, and CPTSD). Results showed regional differences. Ukrainians had the worst mental health indices, followed by participants in the bordering countries, and then by those in the distal ones. War-related variables were associated with worse mental health. The common predictors for PTSD and CPTSD were previous mental disorder, anxiety, and perceived stress, whereas unique predictors were also found (PTSD: female gender and impact of news on mental health; CPTSD: being single, overall impact of war on mental health, sum of lifetime traumatic experiences, resilience (inversely), and depression). Given the continuing uncertainty about the threat of war for many of the nations in this study, findings suggest the need for practitioners to support concerned populations.Publication Distributed State Estimation Through Nodal Redundancy in EPS(IEEE, 2024) Torres Contreras, Santiago Patricio; Moyano Bojorque, Henrry Fernando; Moyano Bojorque, Henrry FernandoThis research work proposes a robust methodology for partitioning electrical systems within the distributed estimation framework, using the principle of nodal redundancy. The approach employs measurements from the electrical system’s nodes. This method’s application involves a comparative analysis between centralized estimation and the proposed technique, using the IEEE 14-bus system as the benchmark. The findings underscore the efficacy of the quality of the estimation and the computational efficiency achieved through this novel methodology. Understanding the exchange of energy and carbon plays an important role in reflecting responses to climate change. In this study, an eddy covariance (EC) measurement system installed in the high Andean Mountains of southern Ecuador was used. As EC measurements are affected by heterogeneous topography and the vegetation height, the main objective was to estimate the effect of the sloped terrain and the forest on the turbulent energy and carbon fluxes considering the energy balance closure (EBC) and the heat storage. The results showed that the performance of the EBC was generally good and estimated it to be 79.5%. This could be improved when the heat storage effect was considered. Based on the variability of the residuals in the diel, modifications in the imbalances were highlighted. Particularly, during daytime, the residuals were largest (56.9 W/m2 on average), with a clear overestimation. At nighttime, mean imbalances were rather weak (6.5 W/m2) and mostly positive while strongest underestimations developed in the transition period to morning hours (down to −100 W/m2). With respect to the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter ((z − d)/L) and the friction velocity (u*), it was revealed that the largest overestimations evolved in weak unstable and very stable conditions associated with large u* values. In contrast, underestimation was related to very unstable conditions. The estimated carbon fluxes were independently modelled with a non-linear regression using a light-response relationship and reached a good performance value (R2 = 0.51). All fluxes were additionally examined in the annual course to estimate whether both the energy and carbon fluxes resembled the microclimatological conditions of the study site. This unique study demonstrated that EC measurements provide valuable insights into land-surface–atmosphere interactions and contribute to our understanding of energy and carbon exchanges. Moreover, the flux data provide an important basis to validate coupled atmosphere ecosystem models.Publication From the Andes, a Proposal for the Sustainability of Life: Ecuador’s plurinational constitution made history by enshrining a commitment to “good living” and extending rights to Mother Earth. The radical paradigm shift has yet to become a reality(2024) Carpio Benalcázar, Jaime PatricioA decade ago, about 400 campesinos and Indigenous people gathered in an auditorium in Chimborazo to participate in evaluating theprovincial government’s social policies. The vice minister of Economic and Social Inclusion was giving presentation on the investments the ministry hadmade in Ecuador’s central region—investments shesaid represented the path to buen vivir (good living/living well)—when she was interrupted by an Indigenous woman from the back of the room. “That is buenvivir for you,” the woman admonished her forcefully.“Your buen vivir is every man for himself, being incompetition, you get more money, and then you getdevelopment. For us, buen vivir is community, it isrecognition, participation, and solidarity.”Publication Cost of Capital in the Energy Sector, in Emerging Markets, the Case of a Dollarized Economy(2024) Cabrera Barbecho, Fanny Narcisa; Aguilar Feijó, Víctor Gerardo; Naula Sigua, Freddy BenjamínThis article estimates the weighted average cost of capital (WACC) for the energy sector in Ecuador, a country with a dollarized economy and illiquid stock markets. Thus, reference companies in the region were taken, and at the same time combined with characteristics of national companies, establishing a useful methodology, which makes sense with the acceptable discount rates in the Ecuadorian economy. For the above, four estimation alternatives were used. In method one, the traditional WACC formula was applied using interest rates and risk premiums from the U.S. market, which resulted in an overestimation due to the double penalty of the country risk and the U.S. market premium. Method two adjusted the market risk premium to consider only the Ecuador-specific risk premium, thus avoiding the double penalty. In method three, the credit default swap (CDS) was used to calculate the country risk premium, and the CDS was excluded from the nominal interest rate, avoiding redundancies. Finally, method four combined the U.S. interest rate with the CDS directly to calculate the market risk premium, more accurately reflecting local economic conditions in a dollarized economy. The WACC results range from 12.63% to 29.70%. In addition, a dummy variable was controlled for during the pandemic period. This article highlights the need for methodologies adapted to emerging markets, since traditional approaches would overestimate the WACC.Publication Drivers of woody dominance across global drylands(2024) Castro Quezada, Patricio SalvadorIncreases in the abundance of woody species have been reported to affect the provisioning of ecosystem services in drylands worldwide. However, it is virtually unknown how multiple biotic and abiotic drivers, such as climate, grazing, and fire, interact to determine woody dominance across global drylands. We conducted a standardized field survey in 304 plots across 25 countries to assess how climatic features, soil properties, grazing, and fire affect woody dominance in dryland rangelands. Precipitation, temperature, and grazing were key determinants of tree and shrub dominance. The effects of grazing were determined not solely by grazing pressure but also by the dominant livestock species. Interactions between soil, climate, and grazing and differences in responses to these factors between trees and shrubs were key to understanding changes in woody dominance. Our findings suggest that projected changes in climate and grazing pressure may increase woody dominance in drylands, altering their structure and functioning.Publication Taking a closer look together. Written and oral feedback in a faculty writing group(2024) Rodas Brosam, Elisabeth LuisaPeer response writing groups support faculty in their development as scholarly writers around the globe. Nevertheless, little is known about feedback provision inside these groups. This work analyses written and oral comments in a faculty writing group to determine how feedback progressed as meetings developed. Results indicate that participants shifted from mainly correcting or giving directions to eliciting clarification, confirmation or information. Similarly, orally retaken comments (oral comments that referred to previous written comments) changed from discussing linguistic accuracy issues to centring on the content and cohesion/coherence of the text, with most of the latter prompting exchanges among participants. With continued participation members moved from mainly offering corrections to establishing a dialogue with authors. In writing groups faculty safely engage in peer feedback practices that enrich texts and writers.Publication Características biológicas y moleculares de la CD66c e importancia en el pronóstico de la leucemia linfoblástica aguda(2024) Bigoni Ordóñez, Gabriele DavideThis study aims to gather information on the characteristics and functions of the CD66c molecule through a literature review, as well as its prognostic role when expressed in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). ALL is a disease originating from the malignant proliferation of hematopoietic cells. It is the most common cancer in the pediatric population, with a survival rate exceeding 70% globally in developed countries. In adult patients, the disease most frequently occurs between the ages of 20 and 40, with an unfavorable prognosis in this population. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of the glycoprotein CD66c in ALL, describing it as a potential marker related to genetic alterations such as BCR-ABL1, hyperdiploidy, and TEL-AML1 fusion gene negativity. CD66c is a member of the carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) family, expressed in the granulocytic lineage, and is involved in functions such as cell adhesion, regulation of gene expression, migration, and signal transduction.Publication Trastorno de la personalidad antisocial y responsabilidad legal: Una revisión sistematizada de la evidencia(2024) Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan Felipe; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio EstebanThis article presents a systematic review on the legal responsibility of individuals diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder from2018 to2024. In recent years, a debate has been maintained on the legal treatment of psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders, due to the complexity in managing their imputability in the legal system. The PRISMA model criteria were used to review and select studies relevant to this objective in academic databases. The results show that there is evidence of alterations at the neuroanatomical level that mayaffect the volitional capacity of people with APD, resultingin poor impulse control. However, some authors agree that, despite these alterations, individuals with this diagnosis are fully aware of their actions and their consequences when committing a crime, so this diagnosis would not necessarily constitute a reason for mitigation oftheir imputability. This articlehighlights the importance of continuing to develop theory and evaluation methods to establish adequate legal treatment.Publication Tal vez ser profesor no haría que mi mamá se sintiera orgullosa". Factores sociales que intervienen en la elección de la docencia en estudiantes universitarios ecuatorianos(2024) Aguilar Feijoó, María Gabriela; Rosano Ochoa, Luis SantiagoThis article is derived from a doctoral thesis and aims to explore how social factors play a rol in the choice of the teaching profession among Ecuadorian university students. To this end, a mixed sequential explanatory approach methodology was used. Initially, a survey was conducted to determine the sociodemographic characteristics of 362 first-year students in the initial teacher-training course for Basic Education at two public universities. Secondly, based on the results of the survey, 6 students were selected to address their teaching professional choice through an in-depth interview. The results show that teaching is a viable vocational choice for this group and that the presence of teachers in the family, school biography and previous experiences in education act as triggers for teacher choice in a context where, in some cases, there is social dissuasion.Publication Arte y psicología(2018) Wilchez, José L.; Avila Martinez, Maria Cristina; Moreno Polo, Miguel Francisco; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio EstebanThis work is a link between Art and Psychology within Cognitive Science. If it is not understood how the subject processes information with respect to Art, it is impossible to appreciate in a holistic way all the dimensions of the human being; including its artistic-expressive facet. The expression of Art is an energetic investment in which the creator of a work of Art shapes his vision of the world. This ability is developed over time (not possessed since our evolutionary beginnings) and is the product of cognitive processes such as memory, representation, problem solving and decision making. Each person is a world and extracts the essence of his environment in an idiosyncratic way, hence each person has a preference for a type of art that goes from the most figurative to the most abstract. To understand Art is to understand an intimate part of Psychology.
