(Universidad de La Habana, 2026-01-16) Arias Pallaroso, Francisco Alexander; Peña Aguirre, Juan Antonio; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban
Introduction: Adolescence is a vulnerable stage where sexual practices influenced by cultural and digital factors are consolidated. In this environment, pornography has acquired a central role as a socialization tool, shaping the construction of identity and contemporary youth sexuality. Objective: To analyze the relationship between risk predisposition, pornography consumption, and sexual behaviors in adolescents from public institutions in Cuenca, Ecuador. Methods: A mixed-methods study that included surveys of students and a qualitative phase with interviews and focus groups (adolescents, parents, and authorities), applying descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: No significant quantitative relationships were found. However, the qualitative analysis revealed that pornography promotes gender stereotypes, minimizes protection, and normalizes relationships without affection or consent. Conclusions: Pornography functions as informal pedagogy. Comprehensive and critical sex education with media literacy is urgently needed to prevent risks and promote reproductive rights. Keywords:Adolescence; sexual behavior; pornography; risk-taking; sex education

(Universidad César Vallejo, 2025-12-23) Vera Bermello, Vanessa Georgina; Ortiz Ochoa, William Alfredo; Tacuri Reino, René David
Promoting reading skills in middle childhood is essential for comprehensive development. However, global, national, and local research highlights limited progress in these skills. This study evaluated the impact of an intervention program to improve reading skills in 73 fifth-grade students from schools in Cuenca during the period September 2022–February 2023, distributed across three quasi-experimental studies. The researchers used the PROLEC-R test to assess participants during the pretest and posttest phases. Experimental groups participated in eight thematic sessions, while control groups received no support. The Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon W statistical tests were used for the analysis of differences, , and biserial rank correlation was applied to calculate effect size. Results showed significant intra-group improvements (p ≤ 0.05) in all three studies. In the post test intergroup analysis of the third study, the experimental group showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) in Letter Identification (Same-Different) and Semantic Comprehension (Sentence and Text Comprehension). In conclusion, while all studies evidenced significant intra-group improvements, the intergroup analysis of the third study demonstrated the effectiveness of the intervention program, highlighting the importance of gamified activities in strengthening reading processes

Correlaciones entre las competencias digitales docentes y el comportamiento móvil del estudiantado: un análisis emparejado
(Instituto Superior Tecnológico Universitario San Isidro, 2025-12-05) Bernal López, Jenny Zoraida; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Cabrera Ortiz, Freddy Patricio
This study explores the relationship between teachers' digital competencies and problematic mo-bile phone use among adolescent students, specifi-cally addressing nomophobia, defined as the irra-tional fear of being without mobile phone access. Using a relational design, a matched database was analyzed, including responses from 642 teachers and 642 students from public educational institu-tions in Ecuador. Results indicated that teachers' digital competencies significantly correlate with various manifestations of nomophobia among stu-dents. It was observed that teachers' effective use of structured educational platforms, such as Moo-dle, tends to reduce problems related to students' excessive mobile phone usage. Additionally, the identified patterns varied by educational level, showing that social mobile phone use predominates in early educational stages, while at higher educa-tional levels, the device becomes a means of coping with academic stress. These findings underscore the importance of strengthening teacher training, not only in technical aspects but also in critical and pedagogical management of digital technologies, aiming to improve educational quality and students' overall well-being.

Violencia de género y violencia de pareja en Ecuador: Una revisión sistemática
(2025) Miguel Francisco Moreno-Polo; Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Briones Arias, Christhye Ionne
ender-based violence (hereinafter GBV) is a relevant topic at both the normative and cultural levels, with clear repercussions within the practice of social and legal sciences. In Ecuador, figures on gender-based violence against women show that it is related to both intimate partner violence and domestic violence. Given this, the objective of this research was to gather relevant scientific information on GBV in Ecuador over the last 8 years. The databases used were ProQuest, WebofScience, Redalyc, and Dialnet. The PRISMA methodology was used for the review, considering the following search terms: "gender-based violence," "intimate partner violence," "partner violence," "Ecuadorian," and "Ecuador." The inclusion criteria were: scientific articles published in peer-reviewed journals, scientific articles written in English and Spanish. Scientific articles were located in the Web of Science, ProQuest, Dialnet, and Redalyc databases. Findings revealed that, despite existing regulations in Ecuador, their implementation is insufficient due to an underlying structural problem stemming from cultural situations related to machismo. The findings highlight inadequate implementation of public policies aimed at reducing and eliminating gender-based violence in Ecuador.

Responsabilidad legal en el trastorno de la personalidad antisocial
(2024) Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan Felipe
This work provides a review of the literature on the legal liability of individuals diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD). In recent years, the legal treatment of psychiatric disorders, including personality disorders, has been the subject of debate due to the complexities associated with accountability in legal contexts. To carry out the review and selection of relevant studies, the PRISMA model criteria were applied to various academic databases. The findings indicate the existence of neuroanatomical alterations that may compromise the volitional capacity of individuals with APD, manifesting in poor impulse control. However, several authors agree that, despite these alterations, these individuals remain fully aware of their actions and their possible consequences when committing a crime, so that the APD diagnosis would not, by itself, imply a justification for reducing their criminal liability. The need to continue advancing in theoretical and methodological development to define an appropriate legal approach in these cases is stressed.

Propuesta de metodologías activas para la inclusión étnica en segundo nivel de Bachillerato a través de la fotografía de fiestas populares
(2025) Reyes Guaranda, Mauricio Esteban; Orellana Moscoso, Abrahan Felipe; Guartatanga Coronel, Jorge Luis
The objective of this article is to design an instructive methodological class for teachers, using photographic narratives of festive contexts as a tool to foster inclu-sive identity processes. The research problem centers on the need to implement innovative methodologies that enhance the sense of belonging in diverse educational settings. The methodolog y employed three methods for data analysis: conceptual analysis, which identified the meanings associated with festivities; phenomenological analysis, which explored partici-pants’ experiences with cultural traditions, and narrative analysis, which structured the visual and textual stories collected. From the impact analysis of the class, it is concluded that photographic narrative is an effective resource for strengthening the sense of belonging and promoting educational inclusion, according to students’ perceptions.

Cryopreservation of Domestic and Wild Animal Spermatozoa: Update of Knowledge
(Intechopen, 2023) Samaniego Campoverde, Jorge Xavier; Galarza Lucero, Diego Andrés; Méndez Álvarez, María Silvana; Duma Pauta, José Mauricio
Current sperm cryopreservation protocols for domestic and wild mammals aim to minimize the cryogenic damage caused by cell dehydration, ice formation, and osmotic stress. The optimization of sperm cryopreservation include the use of different synthetic and nonsynthetic-based extenders supplemented with additives (e.g., egg yolk, coconut water, etc.) and antioxidants (e.g., melatonin, L-carnitine, caffeine, resveratrol, etc.) that protect the plasmalemma, acrosome, and mitochondria against the detrimental effects caused by the cryopreservation process. Furthermore, the use of penetrating (e.g., glycerol, ethylene glycol, dimethylformamide, etc.) and nonpenetrating (e.g., sucrose and trehalose) cryoprotectant agents (CPAs) or their combination should be investigated to protect sperm during the freezing process in slow and ultra-rapid freezing procedures. Finally, new cryopreservation protocols should focus on freezing curves and initial cooling rates that allow optimal dehydration during freezing and adequate hydration during thawing. The suitable interaction of all these factors will allow a sperm subpopulation to survive cryopreservation with integrity and fertilizing capacity, contributing to the improvement of the efficiency of genetic resource management and the development of germplasm banks that support the preservation of genetic diversity in domestic and wild animals.

El costo de la guerra entre Rusia y Ucrania para la salud mental en 11 países: datos transversales sobre factores de estrés relacionados con la guerra, síntomas de TEPT y TEPT complejo
    (2024) López Calle, Claudio Hernán
Exposure to war is a severe traumatic experience with disastrous mental health effects. This study examined the mental health among 5,560 residents in 11 countries worldwide at different geographic distances from the epicenter of the Russian-Ukrainian War (RUW). An online questionnaire assessed war-related variables (e.g., personal experiences with RUW, perceived concern and threat), previous life stress experiences, and mental health (i.e., resilience, anxiety, depression, perceived stress, ICD-11 PTSD, and CPTSD). Results showed regional differences. Ukrainians had the worst mental health indices, followed by participants in the bordering countries, and then by those in the distal ones. War-related variables were associated with worse mental health. The common predictors for PTSD and CPTSD were previous mental disorder, anxiety, and perceived stress, whereas unique predictors were also found (PTSD: female gender and impact of news on mental health; CPTSD: being single, overall impact of war on mental health, sum of lifetime traumatic experiences, resilience (inversely), and depression). Given the continuing uncertainty about the threat of war for many of the nations in this study, findings suggest the need for practitioners to support concerned populations.

Turbulent energy and carbon fluxes in an andean montane forest—energy balance and heat storage
    (2024) Carrillo Rojas, Galo José
High mountain rainforests are vital in the global energy and carbon cycle. Understanding the exchange of energy and carbon plays an important role in reflecting responses to climate change. In this study, an eddy covariance (EC) measurement system installed in the high Andean Mountains of southern Ecuador was used. As EC measurements are affected by heterogeneous topography and the vegetation height, the main objective was to estimate the effect of the sloped terrain and the forest on the turbulent energy and carbon fluxes considering the energy balance closure (EBC) and the heat storage. The results showed that the performance of the EBC was generally good and estimated it to be 79.5%. This could be improved when the heat storage effect was considered. Based on the variability of the residuals in the diel, modifications in the imbalances were highlighted. Particularly, during daytime, the residuals were largest (56.9 W/m2 on average), with a clear overestimation. At nighttime, mean imbalances were rather weak (6.5 W/m2) and mostly positive while strongest underestimations developed in the transition period to morning hours (down to −100 W/m2). With respect to the Monin–Obukhov stability parameter ((z − d)/L) and the friction velocity (u*), it was revealed that the largest overestimations evolved in weak unstable and very stable conditions associated with large u* values. In contrast, underestimation was related to very unstable conditions. The estimated carbon fluxes were independently modelled with a non-linear regression using a light-response relationship and reached a good performance value (R2 = 0.51). All fluxes were additionally examined in the annual course to estimate whether both the energy and carbon fluxes resembled the microclimatological conditions of the study site. This unique study demonstrated that EC measurements provide valuable insights into land-surface–atmosphere interactions and contribute to our understanding of energy and carbon exchanges. Moreover, the flux data provide an important basis to validate coupled atmosphere ecosystem models.

From the Andes, a Proposal for the Sustainability of Life: Ecuador’s plurinational constitution made history by enshrining a commitment to “good living” and extending rights to Mother Earth. The radical paradigm shift has yet to become a reality
    (2024) Carpio Benalcázar, Jaime Patricio
A decade ago, about 400 campesinos and Indigenous people gathered in an auditorium in Chimborazo to participate in evaluating theprovincial government’s social policies. The vice minister of Economic and Social Inclusion was giving presentation on the investments the ministry hadmade in Ecuador’s central region—investments shesaid represented the path to buen vivir (good living/living well)—when she was interrupted by an Indigenous woman from the back of the room. “That is buenvivir for you,” the woman admonished her forcefully.“Your buen vivir is every man for himself, being incompetition, you get more money, and then you getdevelopment. For us, buen vivir is community, it isrecognition, participation, and solidarity.”
