a discretized approach to air pollution monitoring using uav-based sensing
    (2018) Alvear Alvear, Oscar Patricio
Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have become a cheap alternative to sense pollution values in a certain area due to their flexibility and ability to carry small sensing units. In a previous work, we proposed a solution, called Pollution-driven UAV Control (PdUC), to allow UAVs to autonomously trace pollutant sources, and monitor air quality in the surrounding area. However, despite operational, we found that the proposed solution consumed excessive time, especially when considering the battery lifetime of current multi-rotor UAVs. In this paper, we have improved our previously proposed solution by adopting a space discretization technique. Discretization is one of the most efficient mathematical approaches to optimize a system by transforming a continuous domain into its discrete counterpart. The improvement proposed in this paper, called PdUC-Discretized (PdUC-D), consists of an optimization whereby UAVs only move between the central tile positions of a discretized space, avoiding monitoring locations separated by small distances, and whose actual differences in terms of air quality are barely noticeable. We also analyze the impact of varying the tile size on the overall process, showing that smaller tile sizes offer high accuracy at the cost of an increased flight time. Taking into account the obtained results, we consider that a tile size of 100 × 100 meters offers an adequate trade-off between flight time and monitoring accuracy. Experimental results show that PdUC-D drastically reduces the convergence time compared to the original PdUC proposal without loss of accuracy, and it also increases the performance gap with standard mobility patterns such as Spiral and Billiard. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-12-10) Arias Zhañay, María Belén; Alvear Alvear, Oscar Patricio
The activities that are generated in the retailers use technology to automate and enhance the sales and distribution processes. This is why the need for custom software development is presented by the IT area to meet the requirements of the different areas. Under this context, the managements are forced to invest in IT development. The analysis of the software development process of the IT area of a retail identified high delivery times and low quality of the requirements, generating a bad perception on the part of the other retail areas. Based on this, this project proposes the implementation of performance control indicators of the software development process in the Information Technology (IT) area of a retail. For this, SCRUM was implemented as an agile development methodology, Cycle time for the continuous improvement of the process and Balanced Scorecard (BSC) as its control methodology. After the implementation and stabilization stage of the proposed methodology, there was evidence of a change from 74.27% to 81.82% in the average attention to requirements, this with a growth of 7.55%. Also, the customer satisfaction rate increased from 65.10% to 92.56%. Regarding the cycle time of the software development process in average days, it was realized that it decreased from 50.86 days to 48.88 days. The requirements quality rate rose from 68.30% to 91.90%. Under this context, the notable improvement in the software development process is determined by implementing these indicators that allow continuous improvement of the IT area.

PdUC-D: a discretized UAV guidance system for air pollution monitoring tasks
(Springer Verlag, 2018) Alvear Alvear, Oscar Patricio; Calafate, Carlos; Zema, Nicola Roberto; Natalizio, Enrico; Alvear Alvear, Oscar Patricio
Discretization is one of the most efficient mathematical approaches to simplify (optimize) a system by transforming a continuous domain into its discrete counterpart. In this paper, by adopting space discretization, we have modified the previously proposed solution called PdUC (Pollution-driven UAV Control), which is a protocol designed to guide UAVs that monitor air quality in a specific area by focusing on the most polluted areas. The improvement proposed in this paper, called PdUC-D, consists of an optimization whereby UAVs only move between the central tile positions of a discretized space, avoiding to monitor locations separated by small distances, and whose actual differences in terms of air quality are barely noticeable. Experimental results show that PdUC-D drastically reduces convergence time compared to the original PdUC proposal without loss of accuracy. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering 2018.

Universities are structured as organizations that develop within a complex social environment, whose relationship is transversal both internally and externally, i.e. the elements that integrate it interact, change and adjust to the needs of other elements so that the whole system works together. In this sense, the University of Cuenca must continuously evaluate its performance and identify the areas that require improvement based on strategic objectives. To this end, the present work proposes a process manual for the Financial Management that follows three phases. The first consists of characterizing the processes and the macro-process based on unstructured interviews applied to the collaborators of this area, information recorded by means of characterization sheets with their respective objectives, scope, inputs and outputs of each process. The next stage involves detailing the processes and sub-processes through mapping and standardization. Finally, the Bizagi tool is used for process modeling and compliance with the BPM nomenclature. The financial management macro-process is thus established, consisting of 52 processes and sub-processes framed in budget, treasury and accounting management.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-06-23) Lituma Ramón, Jessica Aracely; Seminario Urgiles, Ariana Daniela; Alvear Alvear, Oscar Patricio
In this integrative project, a proposal was made to redesign critical processes belonging to the production, packaging, and sales departments of the Ecuadorian Géneros Ecuatorianos Ecuagenera company. Currently, the company does not have a business process management system in place, which has made it difficult for employees to execute processes efficiently, leading to waste of resources, operational errors, and incorrect information management, thus complicating decision-making and continuous process improvement. Thus, the first four stages of the Business Process Management methodology were implemented, which involved identifying, discovering, analyzing, and redesigning processes. Through techniques such as observation, interviews with employees and department heads, data gathering, analysis, and evaluation, the processes were modelled "as is" and problems and opportunities were identified that contributed to the proposal's development. Following this, the seven critical processes on which the redesign was focused were identified and analyzed, focusing on the digitalization and optimization of activities, resulting in improved times, formats, and activities. Finally, a proposal for a Processes Manual was designed for the departments under study, aiming to standardize the processes and contribute to their proper execution.
