General objective: Determine the nutritional status of elderly people in the nursing homes. Specific objectives: Analyze the nutritional status by measuring weight, heigh, BMI and performing biochemical test such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum protein; diagnose the nutritional composition of their diet; qualify the staff in charge of the food preparation; design a Food Guide for seniors. The measurements for the anthropometric evaluation were: weight, heigh, Body Mass Index (BMI); proven biochemical test were run: hematocrit, hemoglobin, total proteins and their fractions. The results from 129 diagnosed elderly people were: 74,4% women and 25,6% men; 42,6% older than 84 years old; 50,7% are single; 53%receive monthly visits. Regarding their nutritional status, the incidence of malnutrition is 61,2%.About their health conditions – diseases: 27,1% suffer diabetes; 26,4% high blood pressure; 46,51% musculo-skeletal disorder; 20,15% digestive system diseases; 7.8% mental conditions; 33,3% other type of medical conditions. Biochemical test: 29,5% low hemoglobin and hematocrit count; and 91,5% have values between the reference ranges of the total protein test.
