Abstract
Visual impairment (VI) presents several challenges and its impact on oral health has not been sufficiently explored in the scientific literature. This study seeks to understand the experience of children and adolescents (CA) with VS and the role of their representatives with respect to oral health. Qualitative phenomenological study oriented to content analysis using semi-structured interviews and participant observation. Ten children and adolescents with DV between 6 and 12 years of age were included along with their representatives. Chain sampling was used to recruit participants. The analysis was carried out through inductive and deductive coding, categorizing a priori knowledge, oral hygiene practices and the role of the representatives; as an emerging category, the difficulties experienced. The Atlas Ti version 23 software was used to manage and analyze the data collected. Knowledge, practices and difficulties in relation to oral care were evaluated to learn about the experience of children and adolescents with DV. Participants showed basic knowledge about the importance and prevention of oral diseases. Regarding practices, variations in brushing frequency and technique were evidenced. Barriers in oral care and lack of adapted products were identified. Mothers were the main caregivers, playing a fundamental role in daily care. Differences were identified in relation to oral care knowledge and practices, in addition to the difficulties they face in accessing adequate information. Representatives play a key role in the maintenance of oral health, although they also showed deficiencies in their knowledge.
Resumen
La discapacidad visual (DV) presenta varios desafíos y su impacto en la salud bucal no ha sido suficientemente explorado en la literatura científica. Este estudio busca conocer la experiencia de niños, niñas y adolescentes (NNA) con DV y el rol de sus representantes respecto a la salud bucal.
Estudio cualitativo fenomenológico orientado al análisis de contenidos utilizando entrevistas semiestructuradas y observación participante. Se incluyeron 10 NNA con DV entre 6 y 12 años junto a sus representantes. Se empleó un muestreo en cadena para reclutar a los participantes. El análisis se realizó a través de codificación inductiva y deductiva, categorizando a priori el conocimiento, prácticas de higiene bucal y rol de los representantes; como categoría emergente las dificultades experimentadas. Se utilizó el programa informático Atlas Ti versión 23 para gestionar y analizar los datos recolectados.
Para conocer la experiencia de NNA con DV se evaluaron conocimientos, prácticas y dificultades en relación a los cuidados bucales. Los participantes mostraron conocimientos básicos sobre la importancia y prevención de enfermedades bucales. Respecto a las prácticas se evidenciaron variaciones en frecuencia y técnica de cepillado. Se identificaron barreras en el cuidado bucal y falta de productos adaptados. Las madres fueron las principales cuidadoras, desempeñando un rol fundamental en el cuidado diario. Se determinaron diferencias en relación al conocimiento y prácticas de cuidado bucal, además las dificultades que enfrentan en el acceso a información adecuada. Los representantes desempeñan un papel clave en el mantenimiento de la salud bucal, aunque también mostraron deficiencias en su conocimiento.
