In addition, a focus group of experts was conducted with a focus on the hierarchy of attractions, since the data sheet proposed by the Ministry of Tourism has inconsistencies in weighting. Conclusions and recommendations are finally issued

(2020-06-04) Mayancela Jimbo, Maria Catalina; Reinoso Naula, Andrea Estefania; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar
This study exposes the inventory of tourist attractions of Sevilla de Oro, canton of the province of Azuay, as a basic tool for tourism planning considering that it allows to recognize the natural and cultural attractions that each of the parishes has; in addition, it is an element that contributes to the territorial planning of the space in which each attraction is found and the neighboring population, taking into account that tourism and territory cannot be separated from each other. The geographic space of study did not have this tool and according to the methodology of inventories proposed by the governing body of Ecuador, this project was proposed by both, the cantonal authorities and the academy. Attractions were inventoried, then classified, weighted and hierarchized, after resorted to zoning and grouping tourist attractions in different territorial spaces. As a result of this project, ten of the fifteen attractions offered by the cantonal government were obtained, because some of them are considered only resources. Out of the ten attractions, two are cultural and eight are natural, including the hydroelectric dams of the Paute-Integral project. Finally, the information obtained will be used by the cantonal GAD for tourism planning and management projects.

This study arises from the need to analyze tourism governance linked to criteria of leadership, participation and involvement of stakeholders in times of crisis in the city of Cuenca. The research proposed to identify the factors that influence tourism governance, exploring the relationship between leadership and legitimacy between public and private tourism actors, recognizing the mechanisms of collective participation of stakeholders and analyzing their role in tourism planning and crisis management processes. The methodology had a qualitative approach of exploratory - descriptive scope, the cut was cross-sectional between February and May 2023. The tools were semi-structured interviews applied to a sample at convenience: public (9) and private (6) actors. Based on the results of the study, it was concluded that tourism decisions made by the public sector lack legitimacy, there is rivalry between the public and private sectors and leaders prioritize their own interests. In addition, there is no involvement of civil society in decision-making, participation mechanisms are limited to empty chairs and working tables between specific actors. The role of stakeholders is reduced to the socialization of imposed decisions and theoretical and technical approval is requested from academia. In times of crisis, the public and private sectors manifest associativity. In general terms, there is no tourism governance in the city, legitimacy is manufactured, decisions are unilateral and influenced by political capital for the benefit of actors with greater economic capital. Keywords: stakeholders, legitimacy, economic capital, political capital, decision making

This study examines the perceptions of tourism stakeholders regarding crime warning signs, in the Historic Center of Cuenca, to understand their impact on tourist areas. A theoretical review of academic literature on security in tourism spaces was first conducted. The research followed a qualitative, observational, and cross-sectional approach using three tools: participant observation, photovoice, and semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that warning signs serve dual purposes: they function as preventive tools in security management and also influence the perceived safety of both visitors and residents. Furthermore, their strategic placement throughout the Historic Center enhances their effectiveness; however, variations in design and messaging led to differing interpretations.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-04-06) Astudillo Vallejo, Evelyn Tamara; Guachún Arévalo, Ana Cristina; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar
This research was carried out in four rural parishes that are: Turi, Nulti, San Joaquín and Baños within the Cuenca canton, since there have been actions by the public, private companies and people of the parishes during the time of pandemic in the tourism sector. The main objective of the research is to analyze the situation of public strategies implemented in rural tourism during the health crisis in the city already mentioned above. The methodology used in this research had a qualitative, exploratory and cross-sectional approach through semi-structured interviews. The analysis of individual opinions of the representatives was applied, contrasting their experiences until a general opinion on public strategies could be established. The study allowed to observe and analyze the transcendence of the new projects created in pandemic for the enjoyment of visitors, as well as the scope and permanence in time of the new actions of public officials in these four rural parishes. As a result, problems of organization and disengagement between the actors were obtained. That has resulted in strategies and actions that do not last over time. Keywords: Rural tourism.
This research seeks to describe families in absolute poverty in the urban parish of San Sebastian in Cuenca canton, Ecuador, through their perceptions of tourism and heritage and the analysis of leisure and tourism practices. The study has a mixed approach, that is, a quantitative cross-sectional type, with probabilistic and correlational depth. First, families in absolute poverty were identified through participatory assemblies, followed by a characterization of poverty within these households. Secondly, the tourist and heritage perceptions were obtained through a hermeneutic analysis forming semantic networks using Atlas.ti 8 software. Finally, the leisure and tourism practices of households living in absolute poverty were determined through the statistical formulation of decision trees in the SPSS 24 software. It was concluded that absolute poverty limits the right to leisure, recreation, rest and paid holidays, despite the fact that this is a constitutional right in Ecuador and a human right. Therefore, this part of the population needs to be more involved in planning the tourism sector by incorporating public policy based on inclusive and social tourism.

This study focused on analyzing the situation of innovation in higher education in tourism through a systematic review of literature. The objective was to analyze the innovation processes in higher education in the field of tourism after the Covid-19 pandemic. This study used an analysis based on the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis) method to perform a systematic literature review (SLR) based on Scopus databases. As a result, a theoretical reflection on the study was obtained, as well as the bibliometric analysis of 20 documents from 2019 to 2024. Trends in innovation in higher education and tourism were also identified as a line of research. It was concluded that Covid-19 was a trigger for disruptive innovations. Profound changes in higher education in tourism occur slowly and depending on the educational systems, which shows that it is necessary to break the academic bubble and integrate into real scenarios of tourism activity. Thus, innovation in tourism education has an incremental nature, lately focused on the implementation of artificial intelligence.

Azuay, Ecuador
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2022-11-22) Medina Ulloa, Marilyn Elizabeth; Peñafiel Gordillo, Leslie Cynthia; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar
This study analyzes the factors of empowerment and community participation of rural communities in sustainable development processes through tourism. It starts from the needs of the communities to strengthen the factors of empowerment and mechanisms of participation, considering that tourism has become an important activity to achieve their income. However, it has certain weaknesses in the redistribution of its income derived from problems linked to social aspects. The project takes as a case study the community of Migüir located in the buffer zone of the Cajas National Park which belongs to the parish of Molleturo, canton Cuenca, province of Azuay in Ecuador. The research approach is qualitative of exploratory scope. As a first point, a mapping of the tourism actors will be carried out and semi-structured interviews will be carried out with the main stakeholders of the community in question. The study shows that the main limitation for empowerment is the lack of involvement and support in communities by the public sector. In addition, it shows how tourism activities tend to be downplayed in rural areas, making known the complexity that exists when it comes to organization in tourism issues. It is also made known how community participation could improve the organization between actors, empowering communities that bet on tourism. Keywords: tourism, empowerment, sustainable development, community participation, Migüir Community

Business dynamics in touristic and accommodation fields towards the massive hiring of Venezuelan immigrants and the general perceptions of these types of companies: a study in “La Mariscal” área
(Centre for Tourism Research, 2018) Yuctor, Miguel; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar
The debate about migration and human mobilityhas been generalized in almost all spheres throughouthistory, even they were not completely aware and willing to leave their countries or receive foreigners as well. However, during the last years the Venezuelan crisis has forced their peoples to leave the country and look for new places to live. Several countries have hosted millions of those immigrants; countries the world. Latin America and the Caribbean have experienced this phenomenon throughout theirsuch as Colombia., Ecuador, Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. Unfortunately, several xenophobic breakouts have been witnessed already. Ecuador receives thousands of Venezuelan immigrants that have settled in some of its cities. Our country is considered as atransit country as well, being part of the route to southern destinies. The presence of this increased amount of people has affected different fields, and tourismand accommodationis one of these. Itis sad to mention that several companies have decided to hire immigrants, some of them do not even have a legal status which promotesunequal and unfair treatment. Some of them pay less than the minimum wage, others have also physically abused their workers, among others. There are several consequences in terms of xenophobia however the affections to the image and reputation of the touristic destiny are still unknown. One of the aimsof this research is toidentify the perception that touristic business owners that operate in Quito have towards Venezuelan immigrants; as well as the opinions of people whose area of incidence is La Mariscal (Touristic Special Area) of what they think about the image of this place. We used a descriptive and quantitative focus which was based on surveys that were applied to the owners of business that are part of the registry of the Ministry of Tourism that are located in the study area. The citizens that were present were asked as well. The results were analyzed using R studio software. We could conclude that in Europe there are xenophobic breakouts that respond to race and work inequalities while in Quito owners see immigration as an opportunity to lower costs and therefore make more money. The hiring of Venezuelan immigrants is also detrimental to the image of the touristic destiny since people have xenophobic attitudes towards this population.

Caso Cuenca (Ecuador)
(2017) Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar; Freire Chaglla, Segundo Amador
Currently, innovative business models have emerged in terms of operation, through electronic management means, such as Airbnb (accommodation), are present almost worldwide, under the name of collaborative economy, have a pre-dilection for locating in urban settlements consolidated as historical centers; Cuenca, Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity is not the exception. However, they generate discomfort to traditional business models and undermine the authenticity, integrity and heritage values of cultural assets built by virtue of a probable oversupply of accommodation. This descriptive study was conducted through the collection of historical data (2010 -2017) of the Airbnb offer (web page) for Cuenca, and, aims to put in context the characteristics and evolution of this type of offer in a patrimonial city context, resulting in a trend towards the concentration of this type of establishments in historical and heritage areas; In addition, there is evidence of a downward trend in tariffs in the face of pressure to reduce the prices of regulated establishments. This phenomenon has effects beyond tourism, so it is alarming the lack of policies of control and regulation by the public sector, laziness around innovation by the private sector, the lack of studies and the erosion of heritage built culture and housing in relation to the increase of an informal offer.

This study proposes the application of social cartography as a participatory diagnostic tool, utilizing a bottom-up approach, to identify issues in the planning of tourism in the Limon-Indanza canton (Morona Santiago province), located in the southeastern Ecuadorian Amazon. The study’s approach was qualitative and was implemented through social cartography and participant observation during a workshop with stakeholders. The results present a diagnostic of the tourism situation as a starting point for developing additional tools and making progress towards comprehensive territorial planning in the field of tourism. Indeed, issues related to the spontaneous development of tourism around the uniqueness of its tourist attractions are threatened by a lack of collaboration among stakeholders and larger threats such as mining. Ultimately, the use of participatory tools is suggested to capture the perceptions, imaginaries, and social constructs of tourism. The use of social cartography is recommended as a participatory diagnostic tool owing to its fostering of participant inclusion, camaraderie, and cost-benefit efficiency.

(2023) Once Jara, Lorena Isabela; Arévalo Nieves, Lizbeth Estefanía; Espinoza Figueroa, Freddy Edgar; Bazan Quinde, Tatiana Anabel
This study explores the entrepreneurial and innovative dynamics in Cuenca (Ecuador) in the face of an unexpected agent, such as COVID-19. An exploratory survey on the number of employees before (December 2019) and during the third month of the pandemic (May 2020) is presented. It also shows the likely dynamics of soft credits that were required by the private sector but did not arrive in time. In addition, the tourism cadastral registry for 2019, 2020, and 2021 are contrasted at the general level and by each sub-sector of tourism services. Then, the dynamics of tourism entrepreneurship in the pandemic scenario are explored. A mixed approach of exploratory scope was used. The instruments used were surveys, secondary information from three years of tourism cadastral registry, and semi-structured interviews applied to eight entrepreneurs in the private sector. Finally, a significant decrease in tourism employment at the onset of the health emergency was found. Also, due to the crisis, there was a probable dynamic of proper soft credits with urgent options. The cadastral comparison shows a sharp drop and a gradualrecovery concerning the number of tourism establishments. The dynamics of tourism entrepreneurship show that the uncertainty generated responses to the pandemic crisis, some obligatory and others specific to the moment and the business climate of Cuenca, Ecuador

This research explored the dynamics of access to the tourism market by the community of Caguanapamba, Cañar, Ecuador, which is committed to community-based tourism. The methodology used had a qualitative observational approach with an exploratory-descriptive scope of cross-sectional section based on four mini-focus groups aimed at community members and six semi-structured interviews with external actors related to the community at the public and private levels. The Atlas Ti 25 system was used as an analysis tool. The results show that the dynamics are complex and structurally unequal, marked by hierarchies of power. Indeed, state agencies and institutions, while recognizing the cultural value of communities, do not generate equitable practices. This causes, on the one hand, that communities must adapt their offers to a conventional commercial model to access markets and, on the other hand, legal barriers force them to adapt to external logics that are not always compatible with their community vision. However, it is important to mention that communities that have weaknesses in TBC factors such as community organization and leadership in tourism aspects tend to have more difficulties in developing and accessing markets.

This study seeks to understand how the roles assumed by women influence the development and strengthening of community tourism in the indigenous community of Sisid Anejo, in the province of Cañar, Ecuador. To this end, a qualitative study of an exploratory and descriptive nature was carried out, using focus groups and participant observation. Women directly linked to tourism, and women from the community who are not related to this activity, participated in the focus groups, which allowed for a broader and more diverse vision of the existing social and cultural dynamics. The results show that, although women play a fundamental role in the daily operation of the community tourism center, their roles are mainly concentrated in operational and support tasks, while the positions of higher hierarchy and decision-making continue to be occupied mostly by men. In addition, women face a double workload, combining the productive tasks of tourism with domestic responsibilities, many of which are unpaid. Male migration has increased these burdens, creating new challenges and opportunities for female participation. However, the lack of public policies with a gender perspective limits their empowerment and recognition. Despite these obstacles, participation in tourism and community support have contributed to initial processes of economic autonomy and female leadership in the community.
