Abstract:
Thymol is a phenolic compound with antifungal properties and is a bioactive compound
present in the leaves of the species Origanum Vulgare L. The aim was to extract thymol from
fresh and dried oregano leaves using two extraction techniques: Soxhlet and steam extraction.
Soxhlet extraction was carried out with different concentrations of ethanol-water solvents
(100%:0%, 85%:15% and 70%:30%) with incidence times of 6 and 12 hours, while steam
extraction was carried out with an incidence time of 1 hour. Quantification was carried out with
UV-visible spectroscopy using calibration curves. The results showed that the ideal working
conditions for extracting thymol with the Soxhlet method were: solvent concentration
70%:30%, 6 hours and 10 g of fresh leaf. However, a maximum yield of 25.35% w/w was
obtained with 10 g of dried leaf. The ideal conditions for extraction with steam distillation were:
60 g of fresh leaf and 1 hour of extraction, with these conditions a maximum yield of 0.0305%
w/w was obtained. Ultimately, when comparing both extraction techniques, it was concluded
that the Soxhlet method was more efficient in obtaining an extract richer in thymol.
