Abstract

The purpose of this study is to delve into one of the most ancient narrative styles: the Gothic genre; originally European but, as we will see later on, the style has been adapted by the Latin American narrative and explored in the last few years mainly by female writers. Nonetheless, literary criticism has overlooked these works to focus on the study of the Gothic genre and narratives that came only from the 'old continent' or from male writers. This investigation has the objective of analyzing the concepts of the góticoandino ['the Andean Gothic'], the female character, and the popular tale with the hermeneutic framework published in Las voladoras (2020) by Mónica Ojeda. So, we can position female writing and know how female writers adapt the classic characteristics of the Gothic genre to Andean culture to (re)construct new female characters, all within the mystical and cultural plane of the Andes. Among the concepts and authors that will be part of this theoretical perspective are: The Gothic by David Punter (2013), Goticoandino ['Andean Gothic'] by Álvaro Alemán (2017), Escritura femenina ['Women's Writing'], by Hèléne Cixous (1976), the female character by Pilar Lozano (2017), and the cuento popular ['folktale'] by Abdón Ubidia (1993) and Walter J. Ong (1996). The analysis will be based on the hermeneutic methodology of Paul Ricoeur (1995) and the theoretical concepts of the aforementioned authors. At the end of this study, it will be shown that Latin American female writing in the 21st century has returned to and prolonged the Gothic tradition to create new female characters and plots that tie in with Andean mysticism and national culture.
