Abstract
Background: Schizophrenia is a serious mental disorder that affects 24 million people worldwide. It is characterized by alterations in perception, thinking, and behavior; it is one of the main causes of psychiatric care, with a high percentage of hospital discharges. In this context, the family plays a fundamental role in the treatment and recovery process, providing emotional support and promoting therapeutic adherence. However, no studies have been conducted in Azuay to explore the perceptions and experiences of family members regarding the process of accepting the hospitalization of patients with schizophrenia. Objectives: To explore the perceptions and experiences of family members regarding the process of accepting the hospitalization of patients with schizophrenia at the CRA Cuenca 2025-2026. Methods: This is a qualitative study with a phenomenological design. The universe includes relatives of patients with schizophrenia hospitalized in the CRA. Sampling was performed for convenience, until the sample was saturated. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted and recorded prior to consent, in accordance with ethical principles. The data were transcribed and analyzed in Atlas.ti. Results: The purpose of this study was to understand the perceptions and experiences of family members regarding the process of accepting the hospitalization of patients with schizophrenia in the CRA, with the aim of generating information that contributes to the design of more effective psychosocial interventions that promote family well-being and strengthen their role in the patient's recovery.
Resumen
Antecedentes: La esquizofrenia es un trastorno mental grave que afecta a 24 millones de personas en el mundo. Se caracteriza por alteraciones en la percepción, el pensamiento y el comportamiento; constituye una de las principales causas de atención psiquiátrica, con un alto porcentaje de egresos hospitalarios. En este contexto, la familia cumple un rol fundamental en el proceso de tratamiento y recuperación, brindando apoyo emocional y favoreciendo la adherencia terapéutica. Sin embargo, en Azuay no se han realizado estudios que exploren las percepciones y experiencias sobre el proceso de aceptación de los familiares ante la hospitalización de pacientes con esquizofrenia. Objetivos: Explorar las percepciones y experiencias sobre el proceso de aceptación de los familiares ante la hospitalización de pacientes con esquizofrenia en el CRA Cuenca 2025-2026. Métodos: Es un estudio cualitativo de diseño fenomenológico. El universo incluye a los familiares de pacientes con esquizofrenia hospitalizados en el CRA. El muestreo se realizó por conveniencia, hasta saturar la muestra. Se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a profundidad, grabadas previo al consentimiento, respetando los principios éticos. Los datos se transcribieron y analizaron en Atlas.ti. Resultados: Este estudio tuvo como finalidad comprender las percepciones y experiencias de los familiares sobre el proceso de aceptación ante la hospitalización de pacientes con esquizofrenia en el CRA, con el propósito de generar información que contribuya al diseño de intervenciones psicosociales más efectivas, que promuevan el bienestar familiar y fortalezcan su papel en la recuperación del paciente.
