Malestar Musculoesquelético En Trabajadores De Carga Y Descarga De La Ferretería “Ferricenter El Arenal Cia Ltda”. Cuenca - Ecuador
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Fernández Morocho, Josseline Estefanía; Montaleza Villa, Laura Magdalena; Ayavaca Tapia, Luz María
Background: Several studies have shown a high prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort in loading and unloading workers due to the handling of heavy loads and improper postures. In Ecuador, previous research has demonstrated the relationship between working conditions and musculoskeletal injuries, especially in sectors such as the textile and hardware industries. These studies underscore the need to improve working conditions to reduce the risk of injuries and improve occupational health. Objective: To determine the body areas with the highest prevalence of musculoskeletal discomfort in workers in the loading and unloading area of the hardware store "Ferricenter El Arenal Cia Ltda," through the application of the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. Methodology: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was conducted. Data collection was carried out using the Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire (CMDQ), which allowed for the identification of the anatomical areas with the highest prevalence of discomfort, its frequency, and its interference with work activities. Conclusions: The study population presented a moderate level of discomfort associated with their manual handling activities, with the lower back, neck, and right shoulder being the most affected areas. The lack of job rotation acted as an aggravating factor, and it was also a relevant finding that the age group with the highest prevalence of symptoms was 20 to 30 years old.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Saavedra Ríos, Milenka Cristina; Avalos Vanegas, Jessica Viviana; Zeas Puga, Ana Lucía
Background: The transversus abdominis is a deep muscle, fundamental for trunk stability and the prevention of musculoskeletal injuries in physical activities such as recreational running. It represents one of the most practiced physical activities among adults, with regular participation from 13% of the general population; however, in the city of Cuenca, there are no studies analyzing the behavior of the transversus abdominis in this population. Objective: To determine the activity of the transversus abdominis muscle using the Sahrmann core stability test and the Chattanooga Stabilizer Pressure Biofeedback in recreational runners in the city of Cuenca. Methodology: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted with a population of 72 recreational runners belonging to the “Ron Club.” A data collection form was used to gather the information, which was recorded in Microsoft Excel version 2019 and processed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26. Results: 87.7% achieved pressure values between 50 and 60 mmHg at the end of the test. This finding indicates a loss of pressure during the execution of the Sahrmann Central Stability Test maneuvers. Furthermore, 69.2% of the participants exhibited poor stabilization capacity, while 30.8% achieved a classification considered good. Conclusion: Recreational runners presented a TrA activation level equal to or less than 2 in the Sahrmann Central Stability Test, indicating inadequate activation during motor control.

Background: Soccer players face high physical demands that increase the risk of injury, specifically in the lower limbs, due to multiple factors that affect dynamic balance and neuromuscular control. Objective: To determine the level of risk of lower limb injuries in soccer players from the Gualaceo Sporting Club using the Star Excursion Balance Test. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, and prospective study was conducted with 40 professional and amateur soccer players. Sociodemographic and clinical information was collected, and the two-sided Star Excursion Balance Test was administered to assess the risk of lower limb injuries. Data analysis and tabulation were performed using SPSS version 22. For categorical variables, frequencies and percentages were used, while for quantitative variables, measures of central tendency and dispersion were used. The chi-square test was used to analyze the association between the most relevant variables in the study, considering a statistical significance level of p < 0.05. Results: A predominance of low to moderate injury risk was observed, with the left lower limb showing low (50%) and moderate (40%) risk in weight-bearing. The opposite limb showed moderate risk (45%) and low risk (37.5%). No statistically significant relationship was found between the variables analyzed. Conclusions: The Star Excursion Balance Test is a more rigorous and precise screening tool that identified a significantly higher risk of injury, classified as high, in the weight-bearing right leg.

Determinación del riesgo de enfermedad respiratoria en los trabajadores de la empresa Graiman. Cuenca. Septiembre 2025 - Febrero 2026
(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Hernández Urgilez, Rubén Darío; Rosero Chusin, Helen Alexandra; Cárdenas León, Verónica Vanessa
Background: Occupational respiratory illnesses represent a public health problem in industrial sectors such as ceramics, where workers are constantly exposed to contaminants such as crystalline silica and fine particulate matter. This can progressively impair lung function, increasing the risk of developing respiratory diseases that affect work performance and quality of life. Currently in Ecuador, the ceramics industry has experienced remarkable growth; however, there is limited evidence regarding the respiratory health of workers in this sector. Therefore, the use of the standardized ATS-DLD-78-A questionnaire (Ferris 1978) is a practical and effective tool for detecting respiratory symptoms. Its application allows for the early identification of potential risks and facilitates the implementation of preventive strategies that promote safer work environments. Objective: To determine the risk of respiratory illness among plant workers at the Graiman company in Cuenca. September 2025 - February 2026. Methods: This was a descriptive study. The sample consisted of 87 workers from the milling and atomizing, sorting and packaging, pressing, and glazing areas of the Graiman company, who met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using the ATS-DLD-78-A Standardized Epidemiological Questionnaire for Respiratory Symptoms (FERRIS 1978). Tables were then created for statistical analysis and results. Results: Of the sample studied, 73.6% presented a low risk of developing respiratory disease. Furthermore, occupational factors such as dust exposure, work area, and years of employment predominated as the main determinants that should be considered in the study.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Maza Castillo, Edinson Vicente; Fajardo Chica, Melissa Gabriela; Deleg Quichimbo, Clara Leonor
Background: Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome characterized by the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function, causing functional limitations that can lead to falls, fractures, hospitalization, and death. Objective: To determine the risk of sarcopenia in older adults residing at the Santa María de la Esperanza Foundation. Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted, in which the SARC-F questionnaire was administered to institutionalized older adults to assess their risk of sarcopenia. Other important sociodemographic and clinical variables were also considered, such as sex, age, musculoskeletal injuries, and calf circumference. Variable analysis was performed using absolute frequencies, percentages, and measures of central tendency and dispersion, as appropriate for each variable. The association between dependent and independent variables was determined using Fisher's exact test, considering a significance level of p < 0,05. Results: The study found that 55% of the study population were women. 85% of all participants presented a risk of sarcopenia, with this risk increasing proportionally with age. Furthermore, a statistically significant association was identified between the risk of sarcopenia and sex (p=0005). Conclusion: A high frequency of sarcopenia risk was observed in institutionalized older adults. This could be the result of physical limitations and comorbidities or chronic conditions that hinder the performance of physical activity.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-20) Sánchez Cárdenas, Nuriam Maricela; Luzuriaga Andrade, Victor Estuardo; Cárdenas León, Verónica Vanessa
Background: Basketball is a sport that requires an adequate physical development, since it involves the integration of various physiological systems, such as the circulatory, cardiac, muscular, and metabolic systems. Being the respiratory system the one that plays the fundamental role due to the high demand for oxygen consumption caused by the repeated actions of sport, which highlights the importance of an adequate aerobic capacity in these athletes. Objective: Determine the aerobic capacity through the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1, in the athletes of the Henko basketball school during the period of September 2025 - February 2026. Methodology The study was descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional in nature. The sample consisted of players from the Henko basketball school, whose ages ranged from 12 to 22 years, and who were administered the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1. Results The study presented that they have a low aerobic capability, mainly in the “poor” and “lower than average” categories, according to the test. It was a general observation in both sexes, in the different age groups and positions of play. No direct association was found between aerobic capacity and variables such as sex, age, body mass index, or playing position. Although the players with greater training time showed a light improvement in the aerobic performance, it can be seen that there must be an improvement in training to enhance aerobic capacity.

(Universidad de Cuenca. Facultad de Ciencias Médicas, 2026-02-19) Heras Tenesaca, Samantha Noemí; Quezada Solis, Roberth Stalin; Campoverde Vizhñay, Johanna Lucía
Background: Sensory integration is a neurological process through which the nervous system organizes and interprets sensory information from both the environment and the body. When this process is impaired, it can affect motor behavior, learning, and adaptation to the environment, particularly in neurodivergent individuals, such as those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Local research on this topic remains limited; therefore, this study proposed the use of a standardized questionnaire, the Sensory Profile 2, to obtain a comprehensive assessment of sensory profile quadrants in everyday contexts. Objective: To determine the sensory profile of neurodivergent individuals attending specialized and inclusive educational centers in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, during the period from September 2025 to February 2026. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 neurodivergent individuals enrolled in the NOVA and ADINEA educational centers. The Sensory Profile 2 questionnaire was administered to the parents or legal guardians of the participants. Results: Among the 60 participants evaluated, most were between 8 and 10 years of age, with a predominance of males (78.3%). The sensory profile was characterized by heightened sensory sensitivity in 40 participants, along with high levels of behavioral activity (68.3%). The most prevalent diagnosis among participants was Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (40.0%). Conclusion: The study population demonstrated a predominance of sensory hyperresponsiveness patterns and elevated behavioral reactivity.
