Students have the obligation to pass 3 English credit courses in order to comply with academic requirements for graduation. English teaching methodologies are teacher-centered mostly; in these, the emphasis is mainly on developing grammar skills as stipulated in the syllabus for the second level of credit modality of the University Language Institute in 2016-2017. However, academic readings related to students´ interest can be used as an alternative pedagogical tool for teaching and learning English. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of academic reading on students´ reading performance and students´ attitudes towards reading in English and English learning. Throughout this research project seven academic readings were applied to a group of students at low-intermediate level of English between the ages of 19 and 26 in the Medical Technology School at the Faculty of Medical Sciences. For data analysis measures of central tendencies, ANOVA test, and non-parametrical Wilcoxon Tests were used. Significant differences on students´ reading performance, positive attitudes towards academic and English learning were observed. There was not a significant change in attitudes towards reading general English. Further research is recommended to demonstrate the hypothesis that including academic reading in the different English credit courses can improve English teaching at the Universidad de Cuenca.Item Acercamiento psicolinguístico: comprensión lectora, producción textual de los estudiantes de los primeros años de la Universidad de Cuenca, durante el ciclo: octubre-enero 2002-2003(2003) Avila Guaraca, Rosa Isabel; Vintimilla Carrasco, María AugustaItem El acoso sexual callejero desde la perspectiva de los varones estudiantes de la Universidad de Cuenca(2019-03-18) Farez Urgiles, Yolanda Salomé; Auquilla Díaz, Nancy EulaliaThe following research investigated the main characteristics of sexual harassment on public spaces considering young male students from Universidad de Cuenca´s perspectives obtained between 2017-2018 academic periods. It is stated that we live in “Liquid Modernity”, where social models and structures no longer last and a new configuration of human relationships has been determined. The changes that have occurred in this globalized world have had an impact on the sphere of love, making it ephemeral and fragile, where romantic relationships are subject to the logic of consumption and low commitment. However, since these statements are based on European studies, the reality in other contexts, such as Latin America, remains unknown. Therefore the objective of this research was to understand how young adults from the city of Cuenca perceive love and how they live romantic relationships. In-depth interviews were carried out with 12 young adults from the city of Cuenca, males and females, between the ages of 19 and 30. The data was processed through thematic analysis. According to the results, love is perceived as the understanding, patience and support that a woman provides for her partner. The answer to an unplanned pregnancy was always marriage, which evidenced that cohabitation was not considered as an option for the participants. Lastly, the female partner is the only one in charge of home duties such as taking care of children, which meant that she had to find the best way to balance housework and career. The results gathered from this research suggest the need to further analyze this topic by carrying out quantitative studies, and also the need to develop education programs that focus on affection.Item An investigation of strategies to teach english as a foreign language to adult students from Cañar who speak kichwa as ther mother tongue(2013) González Arteaga, María Cecilia; Carr, AnneThis research was undertaken to study Cañari-students’ social background, whose native language is Kichwa, in order to develop teaching and learning strategies through focusing on the level of formal education they present at the time they enter the university. Methods of data gathering were developed to obtain a better understanding of Cañari students and their actual condition to learn English as a new language in order to give them the knowledge and practice which they can value and use in their university and professional lives. To plan and design appropriate classes for the above mentioned students, it was also necessary to research more profoundly into topics related to neurolinguistics, EFL (English as a Foreign Language), anxiety control, didactic material, realia (objects of everyday life used as aids to teach) and practical activities related to the students’ comprehension. Finally, with these concepts and strategies, appropriate activities and lessons were designed, which made it possible for the students to develop their progress in the acquisition and learning of EFL at a beginners’ level.Item Análisis comparativo de las competencias interculturales: caso de estudio en el Bachillerato de la Unidad Educativa Chiquintad(Universidad de Cuenca, 2020-11-27) Mejía Guachichullca, Carlos Eduardo; Collado Ruano, JavierThis research aims to comparatively analyze the intercultural competences built and developed by the high school students of the Chiquintad High School, 2019-2020 school period. To do this, a qualitative investigative approach has been used to interpret analytical induction when contrasting propositions related to the concept of intercultural competence. Specialized bibliography was analyzed to obtain qualitative and quantitative information that allows focusing the evolution of Latin American intercultural education with emphasis on the Andean region and Ecuador. From a critical intercultural perspective, relevant information obtained from the SDG 1, 4 and 5 indicators was analyzed, interpreted and systematized; from the Intercultural Project within the epistemic, political, social and cultural paradigm of the Buen Vivir (OBV); from current state of the public educational service; and from the internal and external evaluation of learning within the legal framework of the LOEI to propose a conception of Intercultural Competences as a trivalent logic of knowledge-do-powers. Results of the Baccalaureate of the Chiquintad High School are based on knowledge-do-powers where the compared groups show a weakening in their intercultural competences of POWER necessary to overcome the coloniality of knowledge and power, as well as for the appropriation of know-how from your community. Definitely, public education policies are worn out by the politicization of education suffered in recent years and do not represent routes of action for the Intercultural Project and the Buen Vivir.Item Análisis comparativo en matemáticas entre segundo de BGU y primero IB de la Unidad Educativa Particular Hermano Miguel de La Salle(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-03-04) Duchi Padilla, Karen Yessenia; Bravo Guerrero, Fabián EugenioThis study, entitled “Comparative analysis in mathematics between the second year of the Bachillerato General Unificado (BGU) and the first year of the International Baccalaureate (IB) at Hermano Miguel De La Salle High School, is an investigation that answers the following question: What common and different elements do these two modalities have in relation to the curriculum, methodology, and the learning level? To respond to this question, a mixed-methods approach research was carried out since an exploration was done to gather data, and thus contrast fundamental aspects of the curriculum of the Bachillerato General Unificado with that of the IB Diploma Programme (DP). Additionally, a group of mathematics teachers from the two modalities were interviewed to identify the methodologies and assessment techniques they use in their clases; students from the first IB and the second BGU took a mathematics general knowledge test to determine the learning level they had achieved; Student ́s T was applied for heterogeneous independent groups. Finally, the outcomes revealed differences concerning the elements of the BGU and the IB curricula. According to the teachers’ responses, they use the same methodology with both classes; nonetheless, the assessment differs due to each curriculum’s requirements. The test showed that the students from the BGU and the IB are highly familiar with structured-based questions, and the students from the IB demonstrated a higher learning level in exercises involving mathematical processes.Item Análisis comparativo sobre el desempeño de destrezas numéricas en niños y niñas del primero de básica en cuatro escuelas de la ciudad de Cuenca(2015) Heredia Tapia, Julio Moisés; Bojorque Iñegues, Gina CatalinaBuilding mathematical foundations at an early age will result in children`s better future mathematical achievements.
