La arquitectura de Sverre Fehn: el universo que cabe en una línea

The work of Sverre Fehn, Prize Pritzker of Architecture in 1997, is one of the most cryptic and seductive legacies of the architecture of second half of century XX. This research analyses the original watercolours Sverre Fehn performs for decades on the island of Hvasser. It unravels the cultural heritage embodied in them, as well as the remarkable process of abstraction they represent. The author's interest in drawing sailboats and horizons is the first step in understanding some of his most relevant fables; The Earth as a Great Museum and The Labyrinth. The ideas and cultural references that we find in them can be considered part of the creative process that becomes in the architecture and teaching work of Fehn.
Beyond petroleum: a look at the impact of electric cars in the three main cities of Ecuador

The purpose of this paper is to study the impact of changing private vehicles in Ecuador’s three main cities from combustion engines to their electric counterparts, and to assess whether the newly created electricity demand could be met by renewable energies located within the city boundaries. The work studies Ecuador’s three main cities: Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca. It was found that in theory and in the extreme case, if there were a sudden change where all the cars and SUVs of Quito were to be replaced by electric vehicles, an electricity demand would be created that could be satisfied through roof installed solar PV within the city boundaries. It would not be feasible however, to do this through wind power. Overall, it was recognised that in reality the changeover to electric vehicles is not likely to be sudden, plus that a transition to electric cars and SUVs only works towards partially solving the problem of fossil fuel demands from the transport sector, but has little impact on the issue of congestion and space requirements. As such, mass transit, multi-modal, electric transport systems have an important role to play in this context for the next stage of research.
Del patrimonio como objeto arquitectónico hacia la patrimonialización del paisaje: un recorrido por las cartas y textos internacionales del patrimonio cultural

The purpose of this paper is to reflect about the evolution of the concept of heritage in which throughout history it has overpassed its monumental and national condition to include in a broader context. The Venice Charter (1964), the Convention of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage (1972), the consideration of landscape as heritage with the creation of the cultural landscape and The Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (2011) as the most innovative tool for managing sustainable urban development are the horizons that structure this reflection. Undoubtedly, this review of international Charters and Texts verify that this conceptual change is accompanied by a transformation of the heritage values, which it is a response to the speed of transformation and accelerated growth of world urban development.
El depósito industrial transformado en arquitectura y el paisaje: una nueva mirada a través del land art

The appearance of colossal industrial deposits in our rural and urban landscapes entailed, to say the least, much criticism and a strong sentiment of rejection. And once obsolete and abandoned, their presence continued to provoke equal or even greater skepticism. This study aims to value how the intervention in these objects and their transformation into architecture has modified their relationship with their surrounding environment as well as the current perception people have from them, and to demonstrate the potential they hold from the landscaping point of view. The analysis of some of these projects evidence on the one hand, that due to the unique nature of these artifacts, the architects who had to face the task of transforming them had to reinvent their way of working, adopting methodologies, strategies and tools from the artistic discipline; and on the other, that the conceptual potential of these artifacts cannot be fully understood without taking into account this artistic and landscaping dimension.
Eclecticismo y arquitectura de hierro: el proyecto original de la estación sevillana de “San Bernardo”- España

Sevilla San Bernardo Railway Station design is not adjusted to a single project. There are different drawings signed by several engineers between 1886 and 1902. In addition, these was not drafted a final project that pick up the final result of the building after all modifications performed. After studying the station historical files which are kept in the Railway Historical Archive, this article aims to clarity some points due to the fact several issues were not drawn after the construction of the station. In addition, a hypothesis about the foundations is proposed because they were modified during the work and no document contemplated them.
El espacio cultural “El Tanque”, un hito arqueológico con vocación regeneradora en la ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife

The Cultural Space El Tanque, an old tank petrol, is a scultural-architectural milestone in the urban landscape of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. It forms part of the cultural equipment and leisure from the recently redefined zone of Cabo- Llano, first settlement of the capital, later marginal district and today, a zone of expansion of the city. It is a clear example of the architectural recovery of an industrial installation inspite of becoming obsolete, it form part of the historic memory of the residents of Santa Cruz. This example of industrial archaeology, today converted in the image of the city, generated controversy for years, with supportive opinions and also detractors who still defend and question its historic testimonial and esthetic values.
Estudio de las iglesias de la ciudad de Ibarra, Imbabura-Ecuador

An analysis of the current state of the churches in Ibarra, rebuilt from the year 1868 after the earthquake and the ones build after takes place, is conducted in order to determine the evolution in terms of parameters such as the spatial configuration and use of building materials, both inside space and facade. Records of every church, including floor plans, photographs of the current state and description of the architectural configuration, structural materials, main facade, interior finishes and cover are made. Data collection are done through a bibliographical analysis and field research corroborated the data obtained in the revised documentation. Exists a chronological evolution in the typology of churches: basilica, vaulted room with a flat roof and unique space, as happens on the facades, giving those different treatments, depending on the time when they were built.
La impronta de El Escorial en la arquitectura española de la posguerra: algunos casos de reconstrucciones religiosas en la provincia de Alicante (España)

After the destruction caused by the Spanish civil war, a theoretical debate started to try and determine what direction the new regime should take. This article analyses the model 'herreriano-escurialense', which symbolizes past imperial glory and which was proposed by the most conservative factions and by the Falange itself. It also looks how this model is reflected in some religious reconstruction works that took place during the post-war period based on three cases found in the province of Alicante. The study is based on the analysis of the documents kept in the General Archive of the State Administration belonging to Rebuilding Parochial Churches, incorporating certain data about its formal elements and some technical and budgetary features as well as references to the architects involved.
Memorias en conflicto: el caso de Coventry

The article attempts to explain the project to rebuild Coventry Cathedral after World War II in the light of the processes of formation of collective memory studied by Sociology, highlighting the conflicting interests of a local community willing to overcome a painful past and a nation interested in using such past to develop a narrative of victimization and resurrection across the country. Moreover it presents the project in Coventry as an example of admonitory monument or Mahnmal, popularized at that time due to the inability to sustain a narrative of war in terms of courage and honor.
Semiótica y deconstrucción en arquitectura: un apunte sobre lenguaje y habitación

This brief essay runs on the current, dominant at the time and now somewhat restful, which, under the heading of deconstruction, have responded recent works of architecture, some emblematic. It is argued, first, how the deconstructive option puts in crisis semiotics hypothesis that establishes the signifier-signified binomial. And it is found, then how an architectural reading that takes the idea of deconstruction literally and embodied it in the image of the building, is no more than a naive anticipation of what, if anything, will end up happening in everyday life. The conclusion is that the inhabitant deconstructs the living space from immemorial time, naturally and spontaneously, as he takes possession of it.
La Serrano de Loewe, Javier Carvajal: análisis de proyecto arquitectónico

Between 1959 and 1964, Javier Carvajal architectural team built thirteen boutiques for Spanish fashion firm Loewe. The innovative design of the boutiques was part of a period of renewal and makeover of the brand, boosted by the cultural modernization that was taking place in Spain. It was at this point when collaborations between architects, artists and fashion entrepreneurs such as Carvajal and Loewe started to increase, as a way to transform entirely the boutiques, products, commercial strategies and corporate image of the brand as a whole. A critical analysis of the boutiques is crucial to get to know the strategies Javier Carvajal used in his designs for Loewe. It is known, for example, that Carvajal transformed Loewe’s boutique located in Serrano Street (Madrid) into an exhibition hall in order to present the new products of the firm as true fashion masterpieces. This and other examples are showcased in this article, which aims to produce a methodological way to analyse the architecture of shops based in Carvajal and Loewe’s work.
