Revisión sistemática(Universidad de Cuenca, 2023-07-19) Armijos Idrovo, Silvana Graciela; Pacheco Carabajo, Luis Adrian; Pesántez Alvarado, Juan MartínBackground: Tranexamic acid (TXA) is a synthetic analogue of lysine, which inhibits fibrinolysis by reducing the conversion of plasminogen into plasmin, thereby promoting the preservation of the clot formed in the operated area and reducing the risk of bleeding. It is eventually used as a complement in oral surgery. Purpose: To analyze the evidence on the effectiveness in hemostasis, appropriate dose, safety margin, benefits, and postoperative evolution of TXA used in oral surgery. Methods: The systematic review was structured from a search tree (PubMed, Google Scholar, ProQuest, and Scopus), with the keywords and Boolean connector: Tranexamic Acid AND Oral Surgery. The search was limited to the English, Portuguese, and Spanish languages; open-access articles; systematic reviews, meta-analyses, randomized clinical trials, and case reports. We established a secondary selection based on the title and abstract of the articles according to the purpose of the study. Findings: The literature reports an efficacy of 80 % of TXA in reducing bleeding risk during and after surgical procedures, which optimizes the procedures. Conclusions: Topical or intravenous TXA in doses not exceeding 20 mg has proven to be effective to reduce the risk of bleeding in oral surgery.Item El acrílico "Miracles 50" para base de dentaduras(1959) Gómez Alvarez, GustavoItem Los acrílicos como material de obturación inmediata(1952-11-11) Astudillo, Carlos César; Muñoz Dávila, RicardoItem Actinic cheilitis: clinical, pathological and therapeutic considerations(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-06-06) Pinos Gavilanes, María Paz; Pinos Gavilanes, Daniel Esteban; Bravo Calderón, Diego Mauriciocheilitis (AC) is a chronic inflammation that affects more frequently to the lower lip and is considered as a potentially malignant disorder that could develop into squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). AC is caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, mainly sunlight radiation. Fair-skinned male patients, older than 50 years, who have worked outdoors or have had long-term sunlight exposure are more susceptible to develop this lesion. Their clinical manifestations are very varied; nevertheless, they are not related to the histopathological alterations that can be found. Histopathological diagnosis is the most important predictive factor of malignant transformation, depending on the severity of epithelial dysplasia. The characteristics of the AC are reviewed, so the clinician can provide optimal care to the patient and prevent lip cancer. The literature review was performed analyzing articles from PubMed, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar and Cochrane databases.Item Adenoma pleomorfo en glándulas salivales menores: revisión de la literatura(Universidad de Cuenca, 2022-10-18) Ordoñez Arce, Juan Sebastián; Arévalo Gárate, Martin Alejandro; Torres Calle, María FernandaBackground: According to the WHO, pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is a benign tumor with variable cytomorphological and architectural manifestations. Objective: Our objective is to review the literature of all reported cases of PA of minor salivary glands from 2002 to 2022. Age, sex, location, clinical, radiographic and histological characteristics, prognosis and treatment options will be reviewed. Materials and methods: A literature search was carried out in PUBMED with the keywords: pleomorphic adenoma and minor salivary glands. Results: Twenty-four case reports in English were included after applying the inclusion criteria. The average age of appearance of the PA was 33.7 years. The male-female ratio was 19:11. The most frequent location was the hard palate (29%). 16.66% of cases presented pain. 27 of the 30 cases (90%) were encapsulated and 28 cases were treated by surgical resection (93.33%). Conclusion: PA constitutes up to two thirds of all salivary gland neoplasms. It presents a predilection for the female sex, it most commonly appears in the parotid gland and in the palate, the treatment of choice is surgical excision and its prognosis is good. Enero - junio 2025. Cuenca, Ecuador(Universidad de Cuenca, 2025-09-18) Jimbo Pineda, Carolina Estefanía; Quizhpi Zatisaval, Geovanny Matías; Carvajal Endara, Andrea SoledadBackground: patients receiving palliative care present various conditions in the oral cavity due to a weakened immune and physical state. A large proportion of them lose the ability to express their symptoms, making timely identification of these conditions essential. Objective: to determine the prevalence of oral conditions in palliative care patients treated at FASEC, from January to June 2025, in Cuenca, Ecuador. Methodology: a descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of oral conditions in palliative care patients admitted to FASEC. Observers were trained and calibrated prior to data collection. Information was gathered through clinical oral examination and questionnaire. For statistical analysis, the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) was used, and data were presented using frequency and central tendency measures. Results: the prevalence of the following oral conditions was identified: hyposalivation (80%), xerostomia (93,33%), dysphagia (33,33%), codes 2, 3, and 4 of the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (100%), and dental caries (100%). Less frequent oral manifestations included mucositis (46,67%), edentulism (40%), and candidiasis (26,67%). Conclusions: the high prevalence of oral cavity conditions highlights the importance of incorporating continuous dental care within the comprehensive management of patients in palliative care. This approach should prioritize both prevention and timely treatments tailored to individual needs, with the goal of preserving oral health and improving the quality of life for this population.Item Aislamiento de cavidades previa la obturación(1954-11-11) Alvarado S., S.
