Alteraciones cognoscitivas en pacientes con drogodependencia institucionalizados en Cuenca - Ecuador
(2018) Zúñiga Bautista, Javier Mateo; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
In the present study, cognitive functions are evaluated in 30 institutionalized drug-dependent patients, compared to a control group of 30 subjects from the normal population. It is an observational, cross-sectional analytical study. Which had as objective, to identify the characteristics of the cognitive functions of the people with and without drug addiction. To this end, the Neuropsi Neuropsychological Brief in Spanish: Neuropsi was applied, which evaluates different areas of cognition: orientation, memory, language, writing, reading, executive functions, conceptual functions and motor functions. The results were against the differences between the groups. Knowing that the clinical group presents multiple cognitive alterations, and in general a lower performance of the tasks with respect to the control group, which does not present cognitive alterations at all. In the same way the evaluated patients presented a greater number of perseverations and intrusions than the control group, indicating an alteration of the cognitive functions related to the inhibitory brake (executive functions). The results can be established that drug users work cognitively differently from non-drug users. The two groups being different from each other.

Ansiedad rasgo y ansiedad estado en deportistas de la Federación Deportiva Del Azuay
(2017) Asanza Espinosa, Gonzalo René; Rocano Deleg, Wilson Edmundo; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
This research seeks to identify the levels of state anxiety (AE) and trait anxiety (AR) in the global arena, by sport disciplines and if there are differences between the two types of anxiety and the sex of athletes. This study was conducted using a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative approach at a non-experimental level. In order to evaluate both constructs, the Spanish version of the STAI scale was used. The sample consisted of 386 athletes of the Azuay Sports Federation, divided into the different sports disciplines: combat, time-mark, appreciation and set, 192 men and 192 women (48 men and 48 women by discipline), aged between 15 to 30 years participated. The obtained results indicated that, both the AE and the AR in the athletes, they register values close to the average of the scale. In relation to AE and RA in the sports disciplines, no significant differences were found. However, it was evidenced that athletes who belong to the time-brand category would present more anxiety. Finally, sex differences were found in that AE is associated with women, and RA in men.

Neuropsychology studies behavior in relation to brain function; a very important part of the cognitive functions of our brain are the executive functions, the same ones that are in charge of problem solving, concept formation, planning and working memory. Some studies suggest that poor executive functioning is related to antisocial behaviors; some violent offenders have poor performance in cognitive control and behavioral control, response inhibition deficits, and slow planning and execution of movements. The present investigation has as a general objective to determine the association between the joint evaluation of the performance of executive functions and the types of crimes in women in the stage of emerging adulthood, who are serving sentences in the Azuay No-1 Deprivation of Liberty Center, in the year 2023. It had a quantitative approach with a descriptive and correlational scope, the type of design is non-experimental and cross-sectional. The population with which the study was carried out was 23 women deprived of liberty in the stage of emerging adulthood. The instruments used for this study were a sociodemographic record made by the author and the Neuropsychological Battery of Executive Functions and Frontal Lobes (BANFE-2). The results obtained in this study show the presence of a considerable deterioration of executive functions in the majority of the population and that is independent of the type of crime.

Características de las funciones ejecutivas en niños con trastorno por déficit de atención e hiperactividad. Cuenca
(2018) Becerra Jaramillo, Jonathan Antonio; Rosales Mitte, Elizabeth Andrea; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
This study aims to describe the characteristics of executive functions in a population identified by the Student Counseling Departments of six educational institutions in Cuenca. This sample is comprised of 31 boys and girls between 7 and 12 years old with ADHD. The executive functions (EF) are the most complex cognitive functions carried out by a person and they are related to the planning, self-regulation, impulse control and decision-making. These executive processes represent the visualization of neurological processes that are established as the basis of the behavior of a person in the normative development. A quantitative approach with a descriptive scope of transversal sub-type was used in this study. A socio-demographic record and the Tower of London (TOL) were used as instruments. As shown in the results, the most affected dimensions in the executive functioning were evidenced in the total of movements, the initial time, the total time, and the violation of the rules. Qualitative observations were also registered, allowing to contrast the quantitative results in the dimensions mentioned before. The results show possible deficits in the executive planning processes, executive resolution of problems, driving inhibition and impulse control, attention control, cognitive flexibility, and adherence to the rules of behavior. Additionally, based on one of the objectives of this study, no significant differences between the socio-demographic variables, age and sex, were identified. These findings represent a limitation of the study due to the lack of homogeneity in the population.

Cerebellum: not just motor function. About a case
(2020) Estevez Abad, Rene Fernando; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo; Piedra Carrion, Maria Jose
The cerebellum constitutes a nervous structure with multiple bidirectional connections with the prefrontal cortex. This relationship allows us to understand its importance on neurocognitive processes. Multidisciplinary evaluation of neurological conditions allows us to study in depth its impact on the emotional and cognitive sphere. Present case study aims to analyze the neurological and neuropsychological characteristics of a 64-year-old patient with cerebellar degeneration (novo progressive cerebellar atrophy), which has 15 years of evolution but evaluated by the neuropsychology area the last four years. After clinical evaluation carried out in two stages, and after check standardized neurocognitive tests, significant qualitative data are observed. A progressive decline in the patient's neurocognitive sphere is evident, mainly in executive processes, such as bradypsychia, attention deficit, cognitive rigidity, foresight deficit, and categorical evocation. The results suggest deterioration evidenced probably related to underlying cerebellar disorder, and evidence of cortex-cerebellar circuits, such dysfunction will influence on neurocognitive processes of executive type.

Cognitive distortions are patterns of biased thinking that affect the way we interpret information; they manifest as automatic negative thoughts and can lead to emotional, cognitive, physiological, and behavioral changes. University students face various demands and pressures in their context, which can generate stress and impact their emotional and psychological well-being. The presence of cognitive distortions can be a risk factor for the mental health of these students and may influence how they perceive and cope with academic and social demands. The general objective of this research was to describe the presence or absence of cognitive distortions in first-year students. A quantitative descriptive approach with a non-experimental cross-sectional design was employed. The Automatic Thoughts Inventory by Ruiz and Lujan (1991) was administered to a simple random sample of first-year students from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences to assess the presence of distortions based on sociodemographic variables and identify the most common ones. As a result, cognitive distortions were found in first-year students of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, with a higher prevalence among women, students in the Veterinary Medicine program, and those who do not live alone. The most frequent distortion was the Fallacy of Divine Reward.

Estrategias de afrontamiento ante el estrés en pacientes con insuficiencia renal crónica en una institución cuencana
(2019-09-03) Murillo Brito, Mayra Ximena; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
Chronic renal failure is part of chronic diseases, which implies the physical, psychological and social weakening of people; and, given that patients diagnosed with CRF have changes at a psychological level, and therefore, high levels of stress, it is necessary to emphasize that coping with the disease is considered a topic of interest and concern for different scientists of human behavior. The general objective of the present study is to analyze how patients, with IRC, handle stress and to know what strategies they use to deal with their illness. The participants were 103 patients, who were between the ages of 18 to 70 and who received the peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis treatment in the Unit of Renal Services of the Austro (UNIREAS). To obtain the results, a sociodemographic record and the Stress Coping Strategies Questionnaire (CAE) were applied to each patient, which measures seven primary dimensions and five of them are grouped to form two general dimensions. For the analysis of the data, measures of central tendency and dispersion were used. The results obtained in this study indicate that, the strategy mainly used by the patients was religion, followed by rational coping, while emotional coping was the least common, as regards the sub-dimensions it was found that the positive reevaluation pertaining to rational coping was the one of greatest use, which indicates that, in the face of a stressful event, these patients assume an active role in the face of the disease, that is, they look for the best way to solve and face the problems.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-10-05) Espinoza Lituma, Jessica Alejandra; Trelles Ludeña, Katherine Nicole; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
Emotional regulation through cognition is strongly related to human development, allowing adaptation and coping with diverse situations in the human future; however, violence and the exposure to it, can generate various imbalances in the response that the violated being generates in the face of the traumatic situation. The general objective of this research was to describe the use of cognitive emotional regulation strategies according to sociodemographic variables in women victims of violence at the Women’s and Family Support Center “Las Marías” on Paute-Azuay-Ecuador in the period 2020 - 2021. The study followed a quantitative approach, with a non-experimental cross-sectional design, and an exploratory-descriptive scope. It counted with the participation of 61 early adult women between 20 and 40 years old, users of the “Las Marías” center. The instruments used in this research correspond to the CERQ (Cognitive Emotional Regulation Questionnaire, Garnesfski, 2001), to evaluate cognitive emotional regulation strategies and a sociodemographic record to identify variables of interest for the study. The results indicated that the strategies with the highest frequency of use correspond to the strategies of Catastrophizing, Blaming others and Positive targeting in women victims of violence, the same strategies of cognitive emotional regulation prevalent among the different sociodemographic characteristics. These findings may contribute to the development of future research in the field of gender violence; on the other hand, contribute to the diagnosis and intervention within centers that are specialized in violence against women.

(Universidad de Cuenca, 2024-02-23) Estévez Correa, Bernardo Sebastián; Caldas Marín, William Andrés; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
Executive Functions (EF) refer to a set of cognitive processes associated with the conscious control of individuals' thoughts and behaviors. In this way, EF can be understood as mental capacities or skills related to self-control, problem-solving, metacognition, adaptation, and flexibility to unexpected changes. Regarding the current research, its focus is on describing teachers' perceptions of the status of EF in children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at Agustín Cueva Educational Center. The study adopts a quantitative approach with a descriptive cross-sectional design and a non-probabilistic convenience sampling method. The population consists of 27 children aged between 8 and 12 years, evaluated by 7 teachers. The data collection tool employed is the CHEXI Questionnaire, designed to assess teachers' perceptions of various executive processes in children. The results suggest difficulties in executive functioning, particularly in the processes of Working Memory and Inhibition.

IMotions’ automatic facial recognition & text-based content analysis of basic emotions & empathy in the application of the interactive neurocommunicative technique LNCBT (line & numbered concordant basic text)
(Springer, 2020) Fárez Plasencia, María Isabel; Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo; Estevez Abad, René Fernando; Torres Espinoza, Felipe Andrés; Mora Fernández, Jorge Ignacio; Khan, Azizuddin
This research paper focuses on the effectiveness of the Line Numbered Concordant Basic Text (LNCBT) of Narcotics Anonymous as an interactive neurocommunicative and gamificated technique to generate empathic emotions through its process and application. The LNCBT is studied as an effective educational, neurocommunicational and behavioral change technique for recovery from addictions. Firstly, it was analyzed through Facial Action Coding System (FACS) using the iMotions Software. Secondly, the FACS results were also contrasted with text-based content analysis to confirm the relationship between empathic emotions and the prose contained in the LNCBT, which the subjects selected through an interactive communicative and game-based learning process: writing the numbers of their favorite sentences that they related with and sharing about them. The analyzed data suggest that LNCBT technique activates emotional empathy, including the ability of identifying through written text and verbal and nonverbal expressions. Results confirmed multiple complex emotional flow from recognizing negative emotions, at the beginning, to more positive emotions, at the end of the technique. From middle time of the technique to the last moments the research observed more balanced emotional states, once the negative experiences were recognized and shared at the beginning. At the end of the experience joy predominates (75%–85% of time) while emotions like anger or disgust tend to diminish. Finally, the text-based content analysis method found data that also suggests that the subjects, during the completion of the LNCBT technique, felt a positive emotional flow towards empathy, a collective, nonjudgmental and shared balance emotional state. The results suggest that the interactive neurocommunicative technique of LNCBT therapeutically supports recovery from the addictive process, from the isolated self-centered obsessive and compulsive emotional state towards a more empathic collective state.

Impacto del aprendizaje del inglés sobre los procesos cognitivos en adultos mayores. Un estudio preliminar en Cuenca
    (2015) Webster Cordero, Felipe Edmundo
A descriptive exploratory study, before and after a six-month english learning course for seniors is conducted to evaluate the cognitive effect of learning another language in this age group in the city of Cuenca. Materials and Methods: 80 adults of average age 70.48 ± 4.9 years (31 men, 19 women) were included; who underwent neurological and neuropsychological evaluation at baseline, six and twelve months after the course; including tests for executive function (working memory and attention processes). Results: Data show significant statistical association between impaired olfactory perception related to age. Neuropsychological tests show interesting data relating cognitive maintenance and even improvement in the Performance Testing Direct and inverse series (Wais III) and Symbol Digital Modality Test (SMDT) six and twelve months after initiating a learning course of English. Conclusion: The study suggests that learning English, even without functional objective of a new language, may have protective effect on the executive functions and neuronal brain networks are claimed the first findings in patients with cognitive impairment. We suggest perform this follow up long term in time to find strongest evidence, related to international bibliography.
