Enhancing L2 Young Learners’ Speaking Skill through Content-Based Games
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2020-03-12) Juca Castro, Cristina Alexandra; Orellana Mora, Susana Ximena
The purpose of this research project is to determine if the use of content-based games can help L2 students improve their speaking skills. This research project was focused on answering the following questions: (1) In what degree does the use of content-based games inside the English class help sixth-grade students from Unidad Educativa Particular “Rosa de Jesús Cordero” (Catalinas) to enhance their L2 speaking skills? (2) Which subskill would have the greatest impact by developing oral communication in an L2 class content? The research involved ten games that were designed based on the students’ age and the school year academic level. There were sixty-eight students as participants, who were divided into two groups of thirty-four students, which started at the beginning of the school year. The students of each group were not a homogenous English level group. Content-based games learning strategy was applied inside the classroom to encourage the students to improve their L2 speaking skills. A pre-test and post-test were applied in order to measure the participants speaking skills before and after the intervention as the treatment group as the control group. The quantitative approach was developed in this research. Findings revealed that the use of content-based games learning strategies had a significant impact on the students on the subskill message for the treatment group than for the control group.

The city of Cuenca is the town of Ecuador with the largest number of master craftsmen dedicated to the sale of handicrafts as unique and unparalleled creations that have been the maintenance of several families over the years. These tasks have been transmitted through generations with the purpose that young people resume activities and adapt them to the new demands of use or utility; and that this knowledge of the traditional artisanal branches is not lost. The objectives of this study were to analyze the importance of the acquisition of handmade souvenirs from the city of Cuenca as representative elements of its culture; identify the supply and demand for artisanal souvenirs, determine their importance; and finally, analyze its acquisition within the tourist practice. Methodologically, field research was used, which allowed a direct approach to the phenomenon under study. The descriptive method facilitated the recognition of the characteristics of the phenomenon called artisanal souvenir. Finally, surveys and interviews were applied to collect information. This analysis concludes that the city of Cuenca has the potential to become a shopping tourism hotspot in Ecuador. Nevertheless, it does not have a representative artisan product that serves as a symbol for national and international tourism promotion in which the culture and artisan branches that are characteristic of the artisans form Cuenca are reflected. Additionally, it was determined that tourists prefer artisanal elaborations over industrialized ones, as products that reflect the representative features of the culture of the city visited.
Work internships have become a key subject within meaningful learning of university students. For this reason, this intervention project focused on developing a management improvement plan for the subjects Work Practice 2 and 3, for students of the Hospitality and Hotel Business career belonging to the University of Cuenca. To carry out this process, an exhaustive diagnosis of the current situation of these subjects was carried out. This analysis revealed a central problem: the inefficient management of internship processes and procedures, mainly caused by the lack of communication between the university and the hotels, insufficient supervision of the students, and the lack of motivation and interest of the students themselves. Based on these findings, an improvement plan was designed that addressed the processes and procedures within the work internship subjects. In addition, the socialization and validation of the proposal, through participatory meetings with teachers, students and representatives of the establishments, made it possible to correct the plan and ensure its alignment with the needs and expectations of the different actors. This improvement plan, once implemented by the university, has the potential to generate positive results in student satisfaction. This would contribute to the improvement in the management of work practices in the Hospitality and Hotel Business career and could serve as a model for other careers and universities that seek to strengthen this essential component of professional training.

This proposal aims to innovate the experience currently offered at the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción in Cuenca-Ecuador, through the implementation of augmented reality. The approach is qualitative in scope descriptive and cross-sectional. The qualitative part evaluates a diagnosis through Customer Journey Map and interviews aimed at the collaborators of the Department of Tourism and Culture of the Archdiocese of Cuenca. The proposal was made based on the first four stages of Design Thinking since it allows the creation of products in an innovative way through the use of tools with an emphasis on consumers. The proposal was focused on millennials and generation Z as its target. The results concluded that the main problem is the lack of information in situ for which, in the canvas of value proposition it is stated that the proposal will contribute as a complementary service through the creation of an interactive, informative, cultural and historical environment through the use of mobile devices. In the Customer Journey Map, it was observed that the points of greatest interaction of visitors are the view of Parque Calderón and the view of the domes; while the points of least interaction were the observation of ceilings # 1 and the Santa Ana sculpture. Finally, a business plan was made that allows covering all sectors, both marketing and a financial plan, this in order that the proposal remains within a functional and efficient scope. The influence of haiku composition tasks on the development of academic writing skills: a qualitative analysis
(2023) Piedra Carrión, Verónica Rosalía; Santillán Iniguez, Juan José; Arévalo Chuquin, Miguel Ángel; Heras Urgilés, Gerardo Esteban; Hidalgo Camacho, Cynthia Soledad; Orellana Mora, Susana Ximena
The inclusion of literary texts, particularly poetry, is not a common practice in the language classroom. However, the available empirical evidence, albeit relatively scarce, does suggest that poetry, when correctly employed, is likely to be beneficial for second and foreign language learners. This teaching material has been used to teach and develop areas such as vocabulary acquisition, grammar practice, and even motivation as well as the four macro-skills in language, namely listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The use of poetry in language instruction emphasizes the predominant role of learners in authentic literary production. As such, this research paper focuses on the qualitative aspect of a mixed-methods study about the effects of haiku composition tasks on the development of academic writing skills. The participants of the study were 30 English as a foreign language (EFL) pre-service teachers. As part of the data collection process, the participating students were asked to write short argumentative essays at the beginning and at the end of a six-week intervention that promoted the composition of haiku. After the intervention, an open-ended questionnaire was administered to identify and describe the participants’ perceptions regarding how haiku composition influenced their academic writing skills. The results of the study show that the great majority of the participants agreed that haiku composition furthered the development of their academic writing skills and vocabulary acquisition. The findings of the study corroborate the existing experimental findings as to the value of poetry-based tasks for second and foreign language learning. Thus, we conclude that the inclusion of poetry in the language classroom ought to be promoted through activities that, while being personal and meaningful to the students, allow for the development of language proficiency.
