Aging is a stage in the life cycle that involves biological, psychological and social changes. From a social perspective, it is natural for older adults to modify their work activity and, in many cases, choose to retire. Thus, having gone through an active working life, they need to maintain their state of activity, but this does not happen, as some seek peace and quiet and engage in activities such as going for a walk or meeting with friends, which, like family support, influences their quality of life. The general objective of this research is to analyze, based on their perceptions, the quality of life of retired senior citizens from public companies in the city of Cuenca, 2023. A qualitative methodology was applied with a phenomenological design and a hermeneutic sub-design, since the aim is to learn about the experiences of retired older adults. The research involved 11 retired elderly people from public companies, as well as 2 professionals in Social Work who work in the selected companies. The instrument used was the interview, which consists of two parts: the first part focuses on the social and demographic identification of the retired elderly, while the second part contains questions related to their quality of life. An interview focused on retirement and the support provided by the company was administered to the professionals. The analysis of the interviews was carried out using Atlas. Ti, and SPSS was used for the presentation of data and graphs on the socio-demographic aspect. In the results regarding the quality of life in the family and community, it is evident that the retired older adult experiences changes in health, occupation, family, social and community environment, which are important for the satisfaction of needs, in addition to presenting solid support networks that have a positive influence on their quality of life.

Given that the family is the main socializing agent during childhood, it is considered that the parenting styles exercised at home can influence the behavior of children in the face of bullying, whether as aggressors, victims, or observers. The research is based on a quantitative approach and uses two questionnaires: the Parental Authority Questionnaire, which evaluates parenting styles (democratic, authoritarian, and permissive), and the Bullying Exploration Questionnaire, which identifies the role of students in school harassment situations. The sample included 154 students from fourth to seventh year of basic education, who met the consent and assent requirements to participate in the study. The preliminary results suggest that there is a significant relationship between parenting styles and roles in bullying. The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between parenting styles and disorders related to alcohol consumption in students aged 18 to 21 from the Social Work program at the University of Cuenca during the February–July 2025 period. The study employed a quantitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional methodology, with a sample of 84 students enrolled in the Social Work program within the Faculty of Jurisprudence and Political and Social Sciences at the University of Cuenca. The instruments used were the Steinberg Parenting Styles Scale, adapted by Merino and Arndt, and the AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). The sample was predominantly female (83.33%), with an average age of 19.49 years, and the majority were in the early semesters (44.05% in the second semester, 36.90% in the fourth). A total of 57.14% reported an authoritative parenting style. Additionally, 60.71% exhibited low-risk alcohol consumption, while 19.05% showed hazardous drinking behavior. The correlation between parenting style and alcohol consumption was weak (r = 0.14; p = 0.203). It is concluded that understanding the influence of parenting styles although not determinative—on alcohol consumption patterns can help in the preventive approach to psychosocial factors among university students.

(2013) Maita Supligüicha, Aida Lucrecia; Ochoa Balarezo, Juana Virginia
This research investigated family structure and its relation to academic achievement in children, its goal was to study the family structure and academic achievement of pupils at “Zoila Aurora Palacios” school in Cuenca, Ecuador. Quantitative and qualitative methods were applied and “fundamental theory” is the underlying conceptual premise. The universe consists of the total student population at this school with a sample of twenty students and their families from which the academic grade information was obtained (school records) and to whom a structured interview guide was applied to gain data for analysis on family structure. The results show that children from families with a stable income and an adequate family structure show high academic achievement. Children from poor single parent families whose structure lacks the presence of either father or mother, and where the parental units lack basic academic skills, have low levels of academic achievement. Conclusions: if children are low achievers in school the family environment needs to be examined. Family structures where the emotional presence and economic contribution of a parent is missing are dysfunctional. Having children should be based on profound reflection on part of men and women since it is unfair to children if their basic needs can´t be attended to.

Migration is a complex phenomenon that involves the movement of people to new territories with the intention of settling temporarily or permanently, driven by various factors. This process entails numerous challenges, particularly for migrants who must adapt to a different social, cultural, and economic environment. In this context, many individuals choose entrepreneurship as an alternative to generate income, facing obstacles such as a lack of support networks, recognition of skills and qualifications, as well as cultural and gender barriers. The research analyzed the expectations of migrant women beneficiaries of the project "Socioeconomic Integration and Humanitarian Assistance for Migrant and Refugee Populations" by Pastoral Social Cáritas Cuenca in 2024. Using a qualitative methodology with a phenomenological design and explanatory scope, data were collected through focus groups to explore their experiences in developing enterprises. The results revealed that these women face economic, familial, cultural, social, and gender-related challenges when starting their businesses. However, their main economic expectation is that their ventures will allow them to cover personal and family expenses. Additionally, they expressed other expectations related to their business development, which were considered in the analysis. This study highlights the importance of providing comprehensive support to migrant women entrepreneurs to overcome existing barriers and promote their socioeconomic integration in host countries.
