Application of brain-based learning theory using graphic organizers for vocabulary improvement for kindergarten students at Rayitos de Luz elementary school, Cuenca
(2016) Ochoa Delgado, Jessica Elizabeth; Chacha Maita, María Patricia; Astudillo Neira, Catalina
This study was designed to analyze the effectiveness of graphic organizers supported by Brain-Based Learning Theory as a methodology to improve English vocabulary acquisition among kindergarten students. After investigating some theories related to children’s language development, this methodology was administered to a group of 14 children from a kindergarten level in 8 sessions over a period of two months. This method focused on the improvement of vocabulary through graphic organizers along with other child-appropriate activities such as: songs, stories, games, chants, rhymes, mother goose, crafts and role plays. This study is based on the idea that graphic organizers are effective tools that help young children make connections in order to store and retrieve new information. The results during the eight sessions and in the post-test showed the positive effects of graphic organizers supported by Brain-Based Learning Theory; therefore, it is considered an alternative approach to teach English vocabulary in an EFL classroom especially to kindergarten students.

The second part discusses the experimental study that has been carried out and describes the method. The third part shows the results including the quantitative and qualitative data. The fourth part presents the discussion of the results and contains the conclusions. The study shows that games play a significant role in teaching English in large classes. The results revealed that as compared to the traditional teaching method, games enhance learning English and they make learning English easier, smoother, and more fun. There was qualitative improvement in English language learning when games were used as a tool. The qualitative study was conducted by interviewing students and teachers. Students were more comfortable learning English in game situation as compared to traditional teaching. The current study proved that learning by playing is more effective and it can be used in teaching English in Ecuador.

Engaging young learners in the process of english learning through critical thinking activities: writing skills-application in the seventh level of basic education at "Bilingüe Interamericano" high school
(2013) Herrera Caldas, Juan Pablo; Astudillo Neira, Catalina
Abstract Critical thinking is a topic that has become increasingly important in education. It is very interesting to read about how critical thinking strategies can help students and teachers in their academic lives. One main reason of why critical thought is important is that it lets the student think by him/herself, to be creative by giving an answer that is original and practical, and it allows the student to solve any puzzling situation, regardless of how many times the student fails. In the long term, it creates positive learning experiences and the sense of achievement grows as well as the students’ self-esteem. This outcome is possible when the teacher and parents provide the children with an appropriate environment. Each time the child talks to a grown up, the conversation should be taken seriously and should enrich the child’s opinion about the given topic. The use of critical thinking skills is a tool that can form a solid foundation of opinions and ideas in the students, which can enable them to “think out of the box”. Key Words:

ESP vocabulary handbook for beginner students of the software development major at the Instituto Superior Tecnológico del Azuay
(Universidad de Cuenca, 2021-03-18) Cabrera Cabrera, Daniela Piedad; Astudillo Neira, Catalina
This research study aims to create an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) vocabulary handbook for the Software Development Major of the Instituto Superior Tecnológico del Azuay and determine the degree of vocabulary improvement after its application. The participants were 20 first-level students at the morning schedule of the Software Development Major. This quasi-experimental research design used mixed methods for data collection. In order to collect qualitative data, two questionnaires were administered to determine the degree of interest in learning technical English before the intervention and observational field notes were taken during the application of the manual. The quantitative data were collected from a pre-test to determine their level of vocabulary knowledge, and a posttest after the application of the handbook to find out whether the students had made some progress. The data were calculated through the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS 24). The results of the research demonstrate that students increased their vocabulary knowledge after applying an ESP handbook that was created for the Software Development Major.
