Abstract

The school has been considered as a specific area in which it is possible to undertake the improvement and transformation of social practices, some of which, due to their cultural foundation, can be an obstacle to learning as it happens when dealing with sexuality, especially in the rural areas. And is that sex education has always been a controversial topic, because there are people who oppose it and others support it based on the importance of the integral development of the human being. But the context in which the controversy is really presented is precisely the school through its educators, for this reason it has been raised the need to explore the perceptions that the teachers of initial education of the canton Cañar have regarding their role in sexual education. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were offered to initial education teachers, and their data were processed through a thematic analysis. The final results allowed to identify the existence of myths and beliefs on the part of the caregivers of the children, which has an impact on their learning process, since the teachers must direct their efforts to correct these conceptions. The main concerns of children between 3 and 5 years refer to conception, birth and aspects related to development. In addition, the perceived strengths include the vocation and teaching experience, the curriculum and the possibility of accessing information on the Internet. Despite this, there is evidence of the fear and insecurity of the educator to teach sexuality as they require more training and support from the competent authorities
