Abstract:
The importance of the correlation between shear wave velocity (Vs) of the Multichannel Analysis of Surface Waves and the non-drained shear strength (Su) of a triaxial test lies in complementing and characterizing broader study areas through geophysics. An integrated geotechnical and geophysical study of a low compressibility silty clay soil in Cariamanga-Loja is carried out.
The objective of this work is to correlate Vs and Su of a semi saturated soil drilling. It is done in two ways: the first is guided by the article "Relationship Between Undrained Shear Strength and Shear Wave Velocity for Clays" by Shehab S. Agaiby and Paul W. Mayne. The second uses a program created by Geo & Geo. In a complementary manner, a standard penetration test (SPT) is performed that estimates the shear strength that a soil must have in certain intervals of SPT stroke numbers (N).
The correlation of Vs and Su, gives a coefficient of determination (R) of 0.67, this means that there is correlation but not in a significant way, but it must be considered that the resistances obtained by the triaxial tests are affected by a notable loss of humidity due to the storage of the samples, and this confirms the difference between Su obtained by the triaxial test and Su estimated with N-SPT. There is a possibility of better correlation with unaltered soil samples.
