Diagnóstico del estado actual de la Hacienda Gullanzhapa, en la parroquia Tarqui, en Azuay, Ecuador

Abstract

During the colonial era, the parish of Tarqui in Azuay, Ecuador, was primarily focused on agricultural production and livestock raising. Despite changes and modifications in the historical buildings of the parish due to economic activities and current needs, some constructions still retain their original form and their landscape setting. In this area is the Hacienda Gullanzhapa, a historical complex of buildings constructed approximately two centuries ago. This property had an agricultural focus and also served as a residence for the owners. Additionally, it included storage spaces for agricultural products and accommodation for workers. In recent years, Hacienda Gullanzhapa has undergone changes in land use, diversifying traditional agricultural practices. Hacienda Gullanzhapa holds significant value for the entire community and parish. It embodies much of the history and culture of the old estates in southern Ecuador, reflected in the buildings and the ancestral construction methods used to build the estate’s blocks. Thus, the plan is to generate documentation of Hacienda Gullanzhapa and subsequently identify the damages and necessary corrective actions with the aim of preserving its historical, social, and architectural values. The process will involve three phases: in Phase I, a historical-critical evaluation, a landscape study, and an architectural analysis will be conducted to understand the estate and its values. In Phase II, a diagnosis will be performed to assess the characteristics and current condition of the architectural elements, describe in detail the functional, technological, and constructive relationships, and identify the most appropriate solutions to ensure the buildings' longevity. In Phase III, based on the analysis and diagnosis, the affected blocks and their main damages will be identified, which will enable the determination of the necessary corrective actions for proper maintenance and conservation. Additionally, efforts will be made to respect the historical and architectural aspects of the estate and to generally assess its potential future uses.
