Abstract
This research seeks to investigate whether social capital manages to mitigate the
effect of environmental pollution under the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC)
approach. A panel of balanced data from 22 Latin American and the Caribbean
countries is used in the period from 2009 to 2017. Among the results obtained, there
are indications that social capital operates as a mitigator of environmental
degradation in Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition, that the nations of the
region are in the growth phase of the EKC.
Resumen
La presente investigación busca indagar si el capital social logra mitigar el efecto de
la contaminación ambiental bajo el enfoque de la curva ambiental de Kuznets (EKC
por sus siglas en inglés). Se utiliza un panel de datos balanceados de 22 países de
América Latina y el Caribe en el periodo de 2009 a 2017. Entre los resultados
obtenidos se reseñan indicios de que el capital social opera como mitigador de la
degradación ambiental en Latinoamérica y el Caribe, además de que las naciones
de la región se hallan en la fase de crecimiento en la EKC.
