The use of comics to learn a new language

Abstract

Nowadays, one of the challenges publishers face when making didactic material for teaching a foreign/second language is the introduction of varied content and methodologies that may catch the students´ attention at their different learning levels. For this purpose, images, photos, drawings, songs, comics, and other elements need to be incorporated. This study focuses on an analysis of the influence of the use of comics as a pedagogical tool for learning a new language. For this purpose, a bibliographic research synthesis of 21 studies related to the use of comics in the learning of different languages was carried out. The participants of these investigations were language students at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. These studies were led by researchers from various universities in 20 countries around the world. The results showed that the use of comics in language teaching has become an excellent pedagogical tool. Its use has shown that comics greatly help and motivate learners to improve their four language skills -reading, writing, speaking, and listening
