Nivel de desarrollo psicomotor en niños y niñas del CEDIUC, marzo 2016 – marzo 2017

Abstract

Antecedents: Psychomotor development consists of the progressive acquisition of skills during the early years of life. But, what does it occur when a child cannot develop age-appropriate skills? We are then faced with the need to evaluate for detection of psychomotor developmental delay. Centro de Desarrollo Infantil de la Universidad de Cuenca (CEDIUC) is one of the institutions in charge of evaluating and diagnosing this condition. General Objective: To determine the level of psychomotor development among infants aged 4 months old through 5 years old, either with special educational needs, or not, who attended CEDIUC.

Methodology: Descriptive-retrospective study applied to data gathering from the evaluations performed at CEDIUC through the Brunet Lezine Test (revised version). The study recorded the number of children who attended this institution during the period between March 2016 and March 2017; the results were classified -in accordance with the variables preciously established- through the use of statistical charts.

Results: From 123 children who participated in the research, 65, 9% present normal psychomotor development; 84,6% of the participants are preschoolers. There is a prevalence of psychomotor delay in boys, with 19,5%. Among the factors which have a negative influence on normal psychomotor development are rural residence (18,7%); basic level of education attained by the mother (15,4%); and prenatal, perinatal, as well as postnatal risks (15,4%)
