Abstract
he present work deals with the history of the San Roque Pantheon, located in the
neighborhood of the same name in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador, which functioned from 1751
to 1928, when it disappeared due to the use of the land for other purposes. Various factors
such as urban planning at the beginning of the 20th century, sanitary policies regarding
cemeteries, and the restructuring of space contributed to its disappearance. Thus, the
objective of this study is to trace the historical data of the pantheon, determine its period of
operation, and analyze the reasons for its establishment and disappearance. It is a
qualitative exploratory research through the search, collection, and analysis of primary
sources such as interviews, and secondary sources such as books, articles, and historical
archives. In this way, based on the results, it is intended to rescue the historical memory of
this popular pantheon, which has been forgotten in recent decades by the citizens of
Cuenca.
Resumen
El presente trabajo aborda la historia del Panteón de San Roque, ubicado en el barrio del
mismo nombre en la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador, el cual funcionó desde 1751 hasta 1928,
momento en que desapareció debido a la utilización del terreno para otros fines. Varios
factores como la planificación urbana a principios del siglo XX, las políticas sanitarias en
torno a los cementerios y la reestructuración del espacio contribuyeron a su desaparición.
De esta forma, el objetivo del presente estudio es rastrear los datos históricos del panteón,
determinar su período de funcionamiento y analizar las razones de su establecimiento y
desaparición. Se trata de una investigación cualitativa de tipo exploratoria a través de la
búsqueda, recolección y análisis de fuentes primarias como entrevistas y secundarias como
libros, artículos y archivos históricos. De esta forma, a partir de los resultados se pretende
rescatar la memoria histórica de este panteón popular, que ha sido olvidado en las últimas
décadas por la ciudadanía cuencana.
