Abstract

Background: the prolongation of life expectancy increases the probability of presenting dependency in the elderly and with it increases the need for their care, which can cause physical and mental symptoms in the caregiver. General objective: to determine the relationship between the tired caregiver syndrome and the level of dependence of the elderly in patients of the home visit program of the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital in Cuenca. 2019. Methodology: analytical, cross-sectional and prevalence study. 85 older adults were included in the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, Cuenca, 2019 home visit program with their caregivers. The sample was calculated with a 99% confidence level, 50% expected frequency, 5% accuracy. Three questionnaires were applied: for the collection of sociodemographic data; the Zarit scale and the Barthel Index. The information was tabulated and analyzed with PSPP 1.2.0. The measures used were frequencies, percentages, standard deviation and arithmetic mean; to test the hypothesis the Chi-square test and to measure association, the prevalence ratio with its confidence interval. Considering statistically significant differences p <0.05. Results: It was obtained that the prevalence of tired carer syndrome in caregivers of patients with moderate to total dependence was 63.5%. There was no statistically significant association (p: 0.414). Conclusion: there is a tendency that the greater the dependence of the elderly, the greater the burden on their caregiver.
