Prevalencia de anemia microcítica hipocrómica en embarazadas que acudieron al Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso Cuenca, enero 2016 – diciembre 2017

Abstract

BACKGROUND Anemia is considered a global health problem affecting 1 of every 3 inhabitants and causing around 115,000 maternal deaths per year worldwide. OBJETIVE Determine the prevalence of hypochromic microcytic anemia in pregnant women who attended the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital Cuenca, January 2016 - December 2017. METHODOLOGY This study was descriptive, retrospective, in 538 pregnant women who came for outpatient consultation at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during the period January 2016 - December 2017. A digital form was applied to collect data such as: age, residence, level of education, weeks of pregnancy, hemoglobin, hematocrit, erythrocytes indices; the information was obtained from the clinical laboratory database plus the clinical history of each patient. The data was processed in the SPSS v.15.0 program. RESULTS The prevalence of hypochromic microcytic anemia was 17.3% with a mild anemia grade of 9.9%, 4.5% were frequent at ages between 19 and 23 years old, that reside in the urban area 15.6%, with secondary school level 10.5% and it predominates in week 28 to 40 represented by 12.1%. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of hypochromic microcytic anemia occurs most frequently as a mild anemia between 19 and 23 years of age, mainly in the 28th to 40th weeks of pregnancy.
