Abstract
The research analyzes the configuration for the perceptual experience and the atmospheric composition in Tadao Ando’s Water Temple, by studying natural light, shadow, materiality, texture and the sensory variables involved in the perception of space. Architectural atmosphere is a phenomenon caused by the relationship among natural light, materials, circulation, and environment, which enables space to produce meaning, emotion, and memory. From this reason, the research adopts a qualitative approach based on a documentary and a case study methodology. This analytical-architectural and descriptive methodology allows to identify, classify, and understand the atmospheric elements existing in the work. The used techniques include a literature review, the collection of plans and photographs, as well as a perceptual evaluation based on the visual, sequential, and sensory analysis of the space, supported by diagrams and sketches. The process consists of three phases: an architectural-atmospheric inventory, a sensory analysis focused on texture, materials, vegetation and water and a study of the behavior of the light and shadow.
Finally, a matrix of strategies for generating architectural atmospheres was developed as a final synthesis of the analysis, which is aimed at organizing the spatial, material, and perceptual criterias identified on the project. The results observed at the Temple of Water show that the experience does not depend by ornamentation itself, but also by the precision at organization of the fundamental elements in the space.
Resumen
La atmósfera arquitectónica es un fenómeno que surge de la relación entre la luz natural, los materiales, la circulación y el entorno, y que permite que el espacio genere significado, emoción y memoria. Por esta razón, la investigación adopta un enfoque cualitativo basado en una metodología documental y de estudio de caso. Esta metodología analítico-arquitectónica y descriptiva permite identificar, clasificar y comprender los elementos atmosféricos presentes en la obra. Las técnicas utilizadas incluyen una revisión bibliográfica, la recopilación de planos y fotografías, así como una evaluación perceptiva basada en el análisis visual, secuencial y sensorial del espacio, respaldada por diagramas y bocetos. El proceso consta de tres fases: un inventario arquitectónico-atmosférico, un análisis sensorial centrado en la textura, los materiales, la vegetación y el agua, y un estudio del comportamiento de la luz y la sombra.
Finalmente, se desarrolló una matriz de estrategias para generar atmósferas arquitectónicas como síntesis final del análisis, cuyo objetivo es organizar los criterios espaciales, materiales y perceptivos identificados en el proyecto. Los resultados observados en el Templo del Agua muestran que la experiencia no depende únicamente de la ornamentación en sí misma, sino también de la precisión en la organización de los elementos fundamentales del espacio.
