Reacciones dermatológicas asociadas al lavado de manos en estudiantes de Medicina de la Universidad de Cuenca. 2022

Abstract

Background: in November 2019 the first case of SARS-Cov2 coronavirus was known, which generated an unprecedented health emergency, leading to multiple prevention strategies such as hand washing for its proven effectiveness, however, this has resulted in different dermatological alterations. Objective: to determine the dermatological reactions caused by hand washing in medical students from third to tenth cycle of the medical career of the University of Cuenca, 2022. Methods: a descriptive study was carried out. The information was obtained from surveys conducted to 158 students from third to tenth year. The sample was generated based on the number of students and a draw in Apportion. A personal approach was made with the delivery of the form and informed consent. Subsequent data analysis was performed with Excel V16 and SPSS V15. Results: out of 158 students surveyed 84.2% presented dermatological reactions on hands, the majority were female 59.5%, age range <24 years 92.4%; they indicate that they perform practices 63.3% and 77.8% make use of gloves for <6 hours 75.3%, hand hygiene was identified <10 times per day 70.9%. Dryness 88.7% and scaling 69.9% as symptoms present and the identified cause was frequent exposure to alcohol 63.1%. Conclusions: the students surveyed had signs of dermatological reactions derived from hand washing, the most common were desquamation, erythema, dryness and burning, the factors that influenced their occurrence were the use of gloves, frequent hand washing and daily use of alcohol.
