Abstract
In the chapter, Communication of Science in Times of Pandemic, there is an analysis of the importance of science dissemination during a pandemic. It also shows what was done in different instances throughout Ecuador and, mainly, from the perspective of Universidad de Cuenca’s administration, which is centered on the topic of COVID-19. The current health emergency allowed the media to rethink about the construction of their agendas. But also to put a spotlight on the importance of science dissemination and the media’s important role in saving lives through knowledge in order to deal with misinformation. Scientists, with their knowledge and experience, took over an essential role in the community. This highlighted two things. First, it showed how far removed the scientific community was in the media’s agenda. And second, it displayed the importance of the use of new media dissemination strategies that should now be applied elsewhere.
Resumen
En el capítulo Comunicación de la ciencia en tiempos de pandemia se analiza la importancia de la divulgación de la ciencia en tiempos de pandemia y se muestra lo realizado, desde diversas instancias, en Ecuador y, en particular, desde la experiencia de la Dirección de Investigación de la Universidad de Cuenca centrada en el tema de COVID-19. La emergencia permitió que no solo los medios de comunicación repensaran la construcción de sus agendas, sino que puso en el centro del debate la divulgación científica y su indispensable aporte para salvar vidas a través del conocimiento para enfrentar la desinformación. Los científicos, su conocimiento y su quehacer tomaron un papel esencial que puso de relieve lo relegados que antes estaban en la agenda de los medios, y cómo, ahora, las nuevas estrategias que fueron implementadas deben mantenerse.
