Abstract
The objective of this study is to determine the impact of institutional variables on environmental degradation in sixteen Latin American countries, measured by CO2 emissions and the change in the Ecological Footprint (EF), using the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) approach. Country panel data over the period 2002-2014 are used. The results confirm the EKC hypothesis when using CO2 emissions, and for the case of the HE it is verified only when institutional variables are introduced as a synthetic indicator. According to both models, we are far from the tipping point

El objetivo del presente estudio es determinar el impacto de las variables institucionales sobre la degradación ambiental en dieciséis países de América Latina, medida por la emisión de CO2 y el cambio en la Huella Ecológica (HE), desde el enfoque de la Curva Medioambiental de Kuznets (EKC). Se utiliza datos de panel de los países durante el periodo 2002-2014. Los resultados confirman la hipótesis EKC cuando usamos las emisiones de CO2, y para el caso de la HE se verifica únicamente cuando las variables institucionales se introducen como un indicador sintético. Según ambos modelos, estamos lejos del punto de inflexión.
