Perspectivas sobre la identidad de género en Drag Queens de las ciudades de Cuenca y Quito

Abstract

The investigation seeks to know what are the perspectives that a group of ten Drag Queens from the cities of Cuenca and Quito have about their gender identity. In order to carry out this study, a six questions semi-structured interview was used. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the diversity that exists around the perception of this construct, the same that invites there to modify, expand or deconstruct old precepts on gender, providing different perspectives from those that have been considered to nowdays, which have only continued to classify as a pathology what is presented as against a traditional social imaginary. Drag Queens are men who use the art of transformism to create hyperfemininity, different from the real one and to develop an artistic presentation which through mockery or satire seeks to break certain socially rigid schemes. The participants with respect to their gender identity referred that it is an intimate process and untransferable. It is that identification that each person makes about themselves from external and internal factors, the same that does not depend on the sex of the subject. Being Drag Queens has allowed them to overstep that gender divisor line to go beyond what is established. They have been able to find that space of freedom that not only encompasses costumes, makeup, wigs or heels, but also represents that message of criticism, art, and elimination of stigmas. Finally, this research has a qualitative approach, with a non-experimental design. The type of study is exploratory-descriptive and the sample is taken by reference.
