Abstract

Now, in our country there are Social Rehabilitation Centers (SRC) that have as a goal the social rehabilitation of those who have been sentenced for some crime. There is a legal framework that protects people who are deprived from freedom (PPL) through which the State guarantees the rights of this priority attention group that remains incarcerated in the SRC and promotes its participation in the following determinant axes for its rehabilitation: education, culture and sport, labor and health; which at the same time are fields where the Social Work as profession directly intercedes to improve the PPL’s life quality. The Penitentiary Management also indicates the functions and goals of the social worker. Through information provided by the social workers of the SRC, families of the PPL and the PPL themselves, it was proved that the Social Work in the SRC doesn’t perform pertinent functions or works under humanistic approaches but performs activities that have nothing to do with Social Work. This reality shows that this profession does not contribute to the social rehabilitation of the PPL and hence doesn’t accomplish the main goal: the social reinsertion of the person, and this is why the PPL that get back their freedom commit some kind of crime again and go back to the SCR.
