Abstract
This paper seeks to address the lack of dissemination of relevant architectural works of modernity in Havana and, especially, to highlight the figure and work of Cuban architect Antonio Quintana. It highlights his role as one of the main exponents in merging tradition with modern architecture in Cuba, a pioneer in applying modern principles in Latin America. Despite his relevance, his legacy has been little studied, both in Cuba and abroad. For this reason, we propose an in-depth analysis of the “Duplex Apartment Building for Enriqueta Fernández” (1952), located in El Vedado, Havana, one of the most representative works of the Modern Movement in the country. This analysis will include historical background, traditional and modern foundations, urban-architectural study, and digital reconstruction. It seeks to demonstrate how this work represents a balance between tradition and avant-garde, thus contributing to the valuation of modern Cuban architecture from a historical-architectural approach. The research is developed through a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodology, structured in four phases. In addition, it is based on the method of Cristina Gastón and Teresa Rovira on the study of the Modern Project, with the objective of identifying the architectural values that define this work within the modern movement. Overall, this study aims to disseminate the importance of Cuban architecture of the 1950s and its impact at the national and Latin American level.
Resumen
El presente trabajo busca abordar la falta de divulgación sobre obras arquitectónicas relevantes de la modernidad en La Habana y, especialmente, poner en valor la figura y obra del arquitecto cubano Antonio Quintana. Se destaca su papel como uno de los principales exponentes en fusionar la tradición con la arquitectura moderna en Cuba, país pionero en aplicar principios modernos en América Latina. A pesar de su relevancia, su legado ha sido poco estudiado, tanto en Cuba como en el extranjero. Por ello, se propone un análisis profundo del “Edificio de Apartamentos Dúplex para Enriqueta Fernández” (1952), ubicado en El Vedado, La Habana, una de las obras más representativas del Movimiento Moderno en el país. Este análisis incluirá antecedentes históricos, fundamentos tradicionales y modernos, estudio urbanoarquitectónico, y reconstrucción digital. Se busca demostrar cómo esta obra representa un equilibrio entre tradición y vanguardia, contribuyendo así a la valoración de la arquitectura cubana moderna desde un enfoque histórico-arquitectónico. La investigación se desarrolla mediante una metodología mixta, cualitativa y cuantitativa, estructurada en cuatro fases. Además, se basa en el método de Cristina Gastón y Teresa Rovira sobre el estudio del Proyecto Moderno, con el objetivo de identificar los valores arquitectónicos que definen esta obra dentro del movimiento moderno. En conjunto, este estudio pretende difundir la importancia de la arquitectura cubana de los años 50 y su impacto a nivel nacional y latinoamericano.
