Sociedad del riesgo, madre tierra y maternidad: claves de lectura en Distancia de rescate (2014) de Samanta Schweblin

Abstract

In the present study, the fictionalization on the concepts of risk society, mother earth and motherhood is analyzed in the novel Distancia de rescate (2014) by Samantha Schweblin, to reflect on the ecological problem, the role of mothers and the distances generated between the human being and mother earth, as well as between children and mothers. To achieve this purpose, we start out from the theoretical categories: “risk society”, proposed by Beck (2002); “mother earth”, propounded by Estermann (2006); and “motherhood”, according to Palomar Verea (2005) and Sau (2000). The analysis method is qualitative and the methodological tool for the critical approach is based on the axes of hermeneutics and, specifically, of the “hermeneutic circle”, a proposal taken up by authors such as Cárcamo (2005) and Nadal Palazón (2019). In this way, the analysis on the relationship that the human being has with nature is broadened, as well as on environmental and gender issues in the literature of Latin America.
