Abstract
Smart tourist routes are an innovative alternative to strengthen the interpretation of cultural heritage through the integration of digital technologies; however, there is little evidence on the actual functioning and development prospects of local initiatives implemented in intermediate heritage cities such as Cuenca, Ecuador. The objective of the research was to identify the operation and future projection of the smart tourist routes implemented through the Fotomap application in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The research adopted a qualitative approach with the support of complementary quantitative techniques, cross-sectional observational design and case study; semi-structured interviews were conducted with actors linked to the project and surveys were carried out with tourists who used the application; In addition, a documentary review was developed to support the analysis of the Smart Tourist Routes. The results showed that Fotomap integrates geolocation tools, QR codes and augmented reality to facilitate self-guided tours in heritage spaces of the city; likewise, strengths associated with technological innovation, institutional articulation and the growth potential of the project were identified; From the users' perspective, augmented reality and access to heritage content were valued as elements of interest during the tourist experience; however, limitations related to usability, access to information, operational sustainability, and the availability of resources for its maintenance and updating were also identified. It is concluded that Fotomap has the potential to strengthen the digital tourism experience, although it requires improvements in user experiences, financial sustainability and access to content.
Resumen
Las rutas turísticas inteligentes constituyen una alternativa innovadora para fortalecer la interpretación del patrimonio cultural mediante la integración de tecnologías digitales; sin embargo, existe escasa evidencia sobre el funcionamiento real y las perspectivas de desarrollo de iniciativas locales implementadas en ciudades patrimoniales intermedias como Cuenca, Ecuador. El objetivo de la investigación fue identificar el funcionamiento y la proyección futura de las rutas turísticas inteligentes implementadas mediante la aplicación Fotomap en la ciudad de Cuenca, Ecuador. La investigación adoptó un enfoque cualitativo con apoyo de técnicas cuantitativas complementarias, diseño observacional transversal y estudio de caso; se realizaron entrevistas semiestructuradas a actores vinculados al proyecto y encuestas a turistas usuarios de la aplicación; además, se desarrolló una revisión documental para fundamentar el análisis de las rutas turísticas inteligentes. Los resultados evidenciaron que Fotomap integra herramientas de geolocalización, códigos QR y realidad aumentada para facilitar recorridos autoguiados en espacios patrimoniales de la ciudad; asimismo, se identificaron fortalezas asociadas a la innovación tecnológica, la articulación institucional y el potencial de crecimiento del proyecto; desde la perspectiva de los usuarios, la realidad aumentada y el acceso a contenidos patrimoniales fueron valorados como elementos de interés durante la experiencia turística; sin embargo, también se identificaron limitaciones relacionadas con la usabilidad, el acceso a la información, la sostenibilidad operativa y la disponibilidad de recursos para su mantenimiento y actualización. Se concluye que Fotomap posee potencial para fortalecer la experiencia turística digital, aunque requiere mejoras de experiencias de uso, sostenibilidad financiera y acceso a contenidos.
