Abstract

BACKGROUND: Currently, population aging occurs due to the continuous advancement of technology, improvement of diagnostic methods, effective and timely treatments, which has increased quality and life expectancy. In Ecuador in 2020, the elderly represented 7.4% of the total population. It is expected that by 2054 they will be 18%. Population aging added to comorbidity and multimorbidity lead to functional loss both for the basic and instrumented activities of daily life, so it is important to prepare society for it. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: to detect the elderly dependent in the “Hogar Miguel León and Hogar Cristo Rey Geriatric Centers”. Cuenca, 2020. METHODOLOGY: retrospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study. Made from the records of 148 older adults. Registering your information in data collection sheets (Annex 1). The program that was used is STATA, to obtain simple tables of frequency, percentages, mean and graph the results. RESULTS: With a total universe of 148 individuals. It was found that 42% of the residents registered a severe level of dependency according to the Barthel index and 79% total dependency according to the Lawton and Brody Index. In the characterization of the population, 62% of the elderly correspond to the female sex, 61% were single, 93% were illiterate or attended only primary school and 41% reported being elderly alone. With these results, we intend to educate society in order to prevent physical dependence and prevent it from progressing to immobility.
