Abstract

Background: Several decades ago was successfully introduced the antibiotic prophylaxis, in order to prevent the endogenous flora and the multiplication of exogenous microorganisms causing infection in the operated area. The role of antibiotic prophylaxis in prostatic surgery is not well-defined among urologists, since urinary tract infection is fairly common posterior instrumentation and other manipulations, also considered that the use of antibiotics reduces the risk of post-operative infection only when there is bacteriuria at the time of the surgery, otherwise the administration of the antimicrobial is still debated. Objective: To assess the practical use of preoperative antibiotics in radical and transurethral prostatectomy in Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital. Material and Methods: retrospective descriptive study that covers the period 2009-2013, through the application of a form, which evaluates the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in patients undergoing open and transurethral prostatic surgery. Results: the use of antibiotic prophylaxis in prostatic surgery was the 72.6%. The choice of antibiotic, onset and duration, are within parameters established internationally. The observed surgical site infection rate was 13.9%.
