Estructura y funcionalidad familiar de pacientes adictos atendidos en el Centro de reposo y adicciones (CRA) en la ciudad de Cuenca, 2023

Abstract

Background: Addiction is a worldwide issue. The causes of substance abuse are diverse and can include family problems, interpersonal conflicts, illnesses, etc. Therefore, it is important to study the relationship between substance use and family structure and functionality. Objectives: To describe the family structure and functionality of addicted patients treated at the Center for Rest and Addiction (CRA) in the city of Cuenca, 2023. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted. Obtaining the informed consent from patients and their families; data collection was carried out using the Family Functioning Test (FF-SIL) and a form crafted by the authors for sociodemographic variables. The study variables included gender, age, residence, marital status, occupation, clinical characteristics, and family structure and functionality. Data were analyzed using the statistical program SPSS v26 and presented in tables. Results: The sample consisted of 74% males (n=37), 72% urban residents (n=36), 68% married (n=34), 36% unemployed (n=18). The 62% had been consuming for more than 2 years (n=31), 52% had previous rehabilitation experience (n=26), 64% consumed a single substance (n=32), and 52% consumed alcohol (n=32). 36% belonged to a single-parent family structure (n=18), 46% were moderately functional families (n=23), 14% were dysfunctional families (n=7), and 12% were severely dysfunctional families (n=6). Conclusions: It was found that addicted patients mostly presented family dysfunction and a single-parent family structure, findings consistent with previous international studies
