Prevalencia puntual de infecciones asociadas a la atención de salud en el Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, Cuenca 2019.

Abstract

The healthcare-associated infections are considered a challenge, not only for health institutions, but also for governments as HCAIS have been found to increase: bacterial resistance, morbidity and mortality, as well as healthcare costs. GENERAL OBJECTIVE: determine the punctual prevalence of healthcare associated infections at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital, Cuenca 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: an observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study was carried out punctually on a Friday for four consecutive weeks starting on the 8th of November of 2019. The study’s sample consisted of 500 patients who satisfied the inclusion criteria and were hospitalized at the Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital during data collection. Data was entered and analyzed using the SPSS 25 program and simple tables of frequencies and percentages were generated. RESULTS: The Vicente Corral Moscoso Hospital shows a prevalence of 14.8% (74 patients) of healthcare-associated infections, with 26 (35.1%) cases of bloodstream infections, specifically sepsis, 22 (29.7%) cases of surgical site infection, 13 (17.6%) cases of pneumonia, 8 (10.8%) cases of urinary tract infection and 5 (6.8%) cases of other infections associated with healthcare. There is a higher prevalence in men (60.8%) and children with a percentage of 35.1%. The neonatology area is the most affected (29.7%) followed by surgery and clinical areas with percentages of 28.4% and 20.3% respectively. The most commonly isolated germs are Escherichia coli (27%) y Klebsiella pneumoniae (18.9%).
