Abstract
This study focuses on analyzing how the process of sociocultural adaptation of Venezuelan
migrants occurs in the city of Cuenca. The research uses a qualitative approach and the
methodological design is based on the case study, relevant to consider the opinion of
migrants, locals and experts, the main actors who contribute to the collection of information.
To obtain the data, the non-participant observation techniques were used, semi-structured
interviews with both Venezuelan migrants and local actors, and a discussion group with
experts in the subject. Regarding the findings, the process of Sociocultural adaptation that the
Venezuelan community is going through, their difficulties and coping strategies were stopped,
as well as the perception of the Venezuelan migrant population by the local community was
theorized. It was also found that social capital is important when arriving at the destination
place because it allows them to feel security and support, and minimizes the feeling of
loneliness. This supports the theory put forward by Pierre Bourdieu who mentioned that social
capital helps individuals to strengthen their confidence to climb sooner in society and remain
relatively stable. This result can contribute to the Cuenca society to understand the situation
of the people who migrate from Venezuela, as well as migrants to know the situations they
can face and how to deal with them and improve their situation in the place of destination.
Resumen
El presente estudio se centra en analizar cómo se da el proceso de adaptación sociocultural
de los/as migrantes venezolanos/as en la ciudad de Cuenca. La investigación utiliza un
enfoque cualitativo y el diseño metodológico se basa en el estudio de caso, relevante para
considerar la opinión de los migrantes, locales y expertos, principales actores que aportan a
la recopilación de información. Para la obtención de los datos se utilizaron las técnicas:
observación no participante, entrevistas semiestructuradas tanto a migrantes venezolanos/as
como a actores/as locales, y un grupo de discusión con expertos en la temática. En cuanto a
los hallazgos, se ha descrito el proceso de adaptación sociocultural que atraviesa la
comunidad venezolana, se definieron sus dificultades y estrategias de superación, así como
también se conoció la percepción de la población migrante venezolana por parte de la
comunidad local. También se encontró que el capital social es importante al momento de
llegar al lugar de destino porque permite que sientan seguridad y respaldo, y minimizar el
sentimiento de soledad. Esto apoya a la teoría planteada por Pierre Bourdieu que mencionaba
que el capital social ayuda a los individuos a fortalecer su confianza para escalar más pronto
en la sociedad o mantenerse relativamente estable. Este resultado puede aportar a la
sociedad cuencana a comprender la situación de las personas que migran desde Venezuela,
así como a los/as migrantes a conocer las situaciones a las que se pueden enfrentar y cómo
afrontarlas y mejorar su situación en el lugar de destino.
