Abstract
Background: Respiratory diseases are conditions that can be caused by bacterial or viral
agents that damage any sector of the respiratory tract, and are characterized by causing
symptoms such as fever, malaise, cough, chest tightness, and dyspnea. They can generate
complications such as: otitis, sinusitis and pneumonia. General objective: To carry out a
bibliographic review of the investigations carried out on the pharmacological activity of 1,8-
cineole present in the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus for the treatment of symptoms
produced by respiratory infections in adult patients. Methodology: The systematic
bibliographic review was carried out using digital databases and scientific journals in English
and Spanish from 2010 to the current closing date. Results: When carrying out this
bibliographical review, information was collected from recent studies that established that 1,8-
cineole, present in the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus, has pharmacological action: anti-
inflammatory, bronchodilator, antimicrobial; in addition to an expectorant and mucolytic effect.
With this project it was confirmed that 1.8 cineole is an effective treatment against different
symptoms produced by respiratory infections.
Resumen
Antecedentes: Las enfermedades respiratorias son afecciones que pueden ser causadas por
agentes bacterianos o virales que perjudican cualquier sector de las vías respiratorias, y se
caracterizan por provocar síntomas como: fiebre, malestar general, tos, opresión del pecho,
y disnea. Pueden generar complicaciones como: otitis, sinusitis y neumonías. Objetivo
general: Realizar una revisión bibliográfica de las investigaciones llevadas a cabo sobre la
actividad farmacológica del 1,8-cineol presente en el aceite esencial de Eucalyptus globulus
para el tratamiento de los síntomas producidos por infecciones respiratorias en pacientes
adultos. Metodología: La revisión bibliográfica sistematizada se llevó a cabo mediante el uso
de bases de datos digitales y revistas científicas en los idiomas inglés y español desde el año
2010 hasta la fecha actual. Resultados: Al realizar esta revisión bibliográfica, se recopiló
información de estudios recientes que establecen que el 1,8-cineol, presente en el aceite
esencial de Eucalyptus globulus posee acción farmacológica: antiinflamatoria,
broncodilatadora, antimicrobiana; además de un efecto expectorante y mucolítico. Con este
proyecto, se corroboró que el 1,8 cineol es un tratamiento eficaz frente a diversos síntomas
producidos por infecciones respiratorias.
