Abstract

The selection of this topic stems from the great importance of understanding the extent of infections that can affect the mother prior to the birth of a new life. This type of research has been conducted countless times in settings different from our own, where the socioeconomic and cultural conditions are more advanced. Therefore, carrying out this research in our own environment will give us a clearer idea of the relationship between health and disease. As previously noted, urinary tract infections constitute the most frequent bacterial influence during pregnancy. Various microorganisms may be present—sometimes causing serious symptoms in the pregnant woman and, at other times, none at all, as in the case of the very common asymptomatic bacteriuria. An important fact is the evidence that most patients who present with this condition did not acquire it during pregnancy; rather, they already had it beforehand. Pregnancy appears to be a factor that promotes the growth and development of bacteria in the urinary tract, leading to an increased incidence of acute symptomatic pyelonephritis, which is typical during gestation.
