Abstract
Ribadeneira y Carrión” is an architecture office that began its work in the seventies and eighties in Quito
- Ecuador. His work has been recognized with several national and international awards. The objective
of this research is to identify the design strategies used in his residential work carried out during the
mentioned years. This research emphasizes the analysis of a housing unit for each studied project. Four
projects are analyzed. Each one represents a different scale developed by the office: Casa Carrión (singlefamily home), Mosquera Complex (housing complex), San Roque Building (mid-rise building) and Kouros
Building (high-rise building). Up to now, there are records of their work in specialized magazines and
books, but there is no detailed analysis. This research fills this gap, because it is the first exhaustive study
carried out on their projects. In this way, the investigation reveals the strategies where are prioritized the
views, the compact volumes that are implanted on topographic platforms, the highly functional distributions
and several other aspects that have been revealed. Two qualitative methodologies applied in different
stages are used. First, for the selection of study cases, is used the method of Hermida M.A. (2012) in their
research “Formal values in traditional rural housing of the 20th century in the province of Azuay”. Then, the
(Re) drawing is applied as a method for the identification of project strategies based on the guidelines of
the book “The modern project. Research guidelines”, by Gastón C. and Rovira T. (2007).
Resumen
Ribadeneira y Carrión” es una oficina de arquitectura que inicia su labor en las décadas de los setenta y
ochenta en Quito – Ecuador. Su trabajo ha sido reconocido con varios premios nacionales e internacionales.
El objetivo de esta investigación es identificar las estrategias proyectuales usadas en su obra residencial
realizada durante los años mencionados. Esta investigación gira en torno al análisis de una unidad de
vivienda por cada proyecto estudiado. Se analizan cuatro obras. Cada una representa a una escala
distinta desarrollada por la oficina: Casa Carrión (vivienda unifamiliar), Conjunto Mosquera (Conjunto
habitacional), Edificio San Roque (Edificio de mediana altura) y Edificio Kouros (Edificio en altura). Sobre
su obra, hasta el momento, hay registros en revistas y libros especializados, pero no existe ningún análisis
minucioso realizado. Esta investigación suple este vacío. Sobre todo, porque constituye el primer estudio
exhaustivo realizado sobre sus proyectos. Revelando así, las estrategias donde se priorizan las visuales,
las volumetrías compactas que se implantan sobre plataformas topográficas, las distribuciones altamente
funcionales y varios aspectos más que han sido develados. Se usan dos metodologías cualitativas
aplicadas en etapas distintas. Primero, para la selección de casos de estudio se aplica la utilizada por
Hermida M.A. (2012) en su investigación “Valores formales en la vivienda rural tradicional del s.XX en la
provincia del Azuay”. Luego, se aplica el (Re) dibujo como método para la identificación de las estrategias
proyectuales basado en los lineamientos del libro “El proyecto moderno. Pautas de investigación”, de
Gastón C. y Rovira T. (2007).
