Towards an E-learning Platform Based on Interactive Visual Elements
(IEEE Computer Society, 2019) Medina Cartuche, Jose Luis; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Vega Zamora, Oswaldo Francisco
The traditional approach of e-learning platforms based on learning management systems has allowed education to be accessible to a broader group of people; however, their pedagogical model based on promoting a transmissive approach has caused learning outcomes do not achieve the success of their traditional counterpart. There is a disconnection between what happens in the physical classroom and what happens when students take an online class. The experience usually goes from interactive to static. In this work, we propose the design of an interactive e-learning platform that makes use of dynamic media such as videos, to improve the interactive experience of students. To this end, the main limitations of current systems are studied and different solutions are proposed to mitigate the problems. The main contributions of this work are, first, to establish a set of challenges that interactive e-learning platforms should support, and second, the description of the necessary processes to implement the platform.

Enriching Electronic Program Guides using semantic technologies and external resources
(INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC., 2014-09-15) Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Alban Bermeo, Humberto Marcelo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Palacio Baus, Kenneth Samuel
Electronic Program Guides (EPGs) describe broadcast programming information provided by TV stations. However, users may obtain more information when these guides have been enriched. The main contribution of this work is to present an automation process for EPG's information enrichment through the use of semantic technologies and external resources. Among the several resources involved in the enrichment process, the following can be mentioned : ontologies, web services, semantic repositories and natural language processing techniques.

REDI: a linked data-powered research networking platform
(Springer, 2018) Sumba Toral, Francisco Xavier; Segarra Flores, José Luis; Villazón Terrazas, Boris Marcelo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Sumba Toral, Francisco Xavier
Research networking is a difficult part of academics in spite of the multiple benefits that the Web has brought within this field in recent years. Even though scientific and business social networks provide a medium to discover peers worldwide, their usefulness meets its limits when real-world requirements come in. The broad audience of those tools and other bibliographic databases lead them to ignore cultural and geographical aspects such regional indexes, organizational structures, among others. On this poster, we introduce REDI, a Linked Data - powered research networking platform which combines both local (institutional/regional) and external (Web) scholarly sources in a consolidated knowledge base. Moreover, REDI leverages on its knowledge base to cluster authors within similar research areas easing networking and unveiling a variety of new information from data for multiple purposes.

(2014) Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Cisneros Espinoza, Felipe Eduardo ; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo

A general process for the semantic annotation and enrichment of electronic program guides
(Springer Verlag, 2019) Gonzalez Toral, Hernan Santiago; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Palacio Baus, Kenneth Samuel; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo
Electronic Program Guides (EPGs) are usual resources aimed to inform the audience about the programming being transmitted by TV stations and cable/satellite TV providers. However, they only provide basic metadata about the TV programs, while users may want to obtain additional information related to the content they are currently watching. This paper proposes a general process for the semantic annotation and subsequent enrichment of EPGs using external knowledge bases and natural language processing techniques with the aim to tackle the lack of immediate availability of related information about TV programs. Additionally, we define an evaluation approach based on a distributed representation of words that can enable TV content providers to verify the effectiveness of the system and perform an automatic execution of the enrichment process. We test our proposal using a real-world dataset and demonstrate its effectiveness by using different knowledge bases, word representation models and similarity measures. Results showed that DBpedia and Google Knowledge Graph knowledge bases return the most relevant content during the enrichment process, while word2vec and fasttext models with Words Mover’s Distance as similarity function can be combined to validate the effectiveness of the retrieval task.

Detecting Similar Areas of Knowledge Using Semantic and Data Mining Technologies
(ELSEVIER B.V., 2016-12-09) Sumba, X; Baculima Cumbe, John Fernando; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Sumba, F; Tello Guerrero, Marco Andrés
Searching for scientific publications online is an essential task for researchers working on a certain topic. However, the extremely large amount of scientific publications found in the web turns the process of finding a publication into a very difficult task whereas, locating peers interested in collaborating on a specific topic or reviewing literature is even more challenging. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture to join multiple bibliographic sources, with the aim of identifying common research areas and potential collaboration networks, through a combination of ontologies, vocabularies, and Linked Data technologies for enriching a base data model. Furthermore, we implement a prototype to provide a centralized repository with bibliographic sources and to find similar knowledge areas using data mining techniques in the domain of Ecuadorian researchers community.

Uso de CBCT y herramientas computacionales odontologicas para la reconstrucción tridimensional de objetos arquelógicos
(2020) Vega Zamora, Oswaldo Francisco; Da Costa Moraes, Cicero André; Pacheco Merchan, Maria Belen; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Cazar Almache, Marcelo Enrique
Cone Beam Computed Tomographs (CBCT) provide high-quality 3D images with submillimeter resolutions, fairly short scantimes (10 to 70 seconds) and radiation doses up to 15 times lower than classic CT systems. Thanks to this, its use in differentareas, both in dentistry and in other areas, has increased significantly. Additionally, the advancement of teleradiology and thecompatibility of the resulting DICOM images with different types of planning, simulation and 3D printing software; have madeit possible to consolidate a powerful tool for the possible early and accurate diagnosis of different deep lesions, anomalies andthe acquisition of deep knowledge about a specific maxillofacial area and its relationship with adjacent structures. However, its resulting measurements with very little error range and the possibility of generating three-dimensional reconstructionsmake it a clear pedagogical instrument of great utility in modern archaeological, technological, forensic, anthropologicaland biomedical investigation techniques. This article provides an overview of CBCT systems, their associated computationaltechnologies, and demonstrates their applicability as tools for the analysis, preservation, reconstruction and reproduction ofarchaeological pieces. As a test, its application in the acquisition of different stereolithographic models of archaeologicalremains of the Pumapungo Museum in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador is described

Audio fingerprint parameterization for multimedia advertising identification
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Medina Cartuche, Jose Luis; Vega Zamora, Oswaldo Francisco; Mendoza Siguenza, Daniel Emilio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Victor Hugo
This article follows step by step a general framework for fingerprint extraction in order to develop a system for advertisements' monitoring. The parameterization process uses some spatial and spectral characteristics measured over 600 advertisements that contain various types of sounds. Key factors such as accuracy, process time, and granularity are analyzed together in order to enhance the system performance. At the end, the algorithm shows an accuracy of 99% using three seconds of granularity samples, and also the best compromise between processing time and performance is achieved. This study suggests a set of parameterization steps which could be successfully implemented in other related audio applications. © 2017 IEEE.

LOD-GF: an integral linked open data generation framework
(Springer Nature, 2019) Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Segarra Flores, José Luis; Tello Guerrero, Marco Andres; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Lupercio Novillo, Rosa Lucía; Villazón Terrazas, Boris Marcelo; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo
Linked Open Data (LOD) generation is a common activity within organizations due to its advantages for sharing and reusing information. Since these technologies require specialized knowledge, the development of technological and methodological tools that allows its implementation is limited. Most of the current solutions are built on top of specific tools which require considerable effort to consolidate into an integral solution. Moreover, those tools work on specific domains, or they do not support some of the phases required for LOD life cycle (e.g., data cleaning, data exploitation). In this paper, we present a framework for LOD management which follows methodological principles presented in the state of the art in scientific literature and provides an unified software tool for publishing LOD for multiple domains and technologies. Our platform leverages a modular ETL processor, allowing a transparent and flexible integration, providing an integral environment for LOD. This framework was tested, successfully, using data sources from different domains, e.g., digital repositories, libraries.
