Towards an E-learning Platform Based on Interactive Visual Elements
(IEEE Computer Society, 2019) Medina Cartuche, Jose Luis; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Vega Zamora, Oswaldo Francisco
The traditional approach of e-learning platforms based on learning management systems has allowed education to be accessible to a broader group of people; however, their pedagogical model based on promoting a transmissive approach has caused learning outcomes do not achieve the success of their traditional counterpart. There is a disconnection between what happens in the physical classroom and what happens when students take an online class. The experience usually goes from interactive to static. In this work, we propose the design of an interactive e-learning platform that makes use of dynamic media such as videos, to improve the interactive experience of students. To this end, the main limitations of current systems are studied and different solutions are proposed to mitigate the problems. The main contributions of this work are, first, to establish a set of challenges that interactive e-learning platforms should support, and second, the description of the necessary processes to implement the platform.

Audio fingerprint parameterization for multimedia advertising identification
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2017) Medina Cartuche, Jose Luis; Vega Zamora, Oswaldo Francisco; Mendoza Siguenza, Daniel Emilio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Victor Hugo
This article follows step by step a general framework for fingerprint extraction in order to develop a system for advertisements' monitoring. The parameterization process uses some spatial and spectral characteristics measured over 600 advertisements that contain various types of sounds. Key factors such as accuracy, process time, and granularity are analyzed together in order to enhance the system performance. At the end, the algorithm shows an accuracy of 99% using three seconds of granularity samples, and also the best compromise between processing time and performance is achieved. This study suggests a set of parameterization steps which could be successfully implemented in other related audio applications. © 2017 IEEE.

REDI: a linked data-powered research networking platform
(Springer, 2018) Sumba Toral, Francisco Xavier; Segarra Flores, José Luis; Villazón Terrazas, Boris Marcelo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Sumba Toral, Francisco Xavier
Research networking is a difficult part of academics in spite of the multiple benefits that the Web has brought within this field in recent years. Even though scientific and business social networks provide a medium to discover peers worldwide, their usefulness meets its limits when real-world requirements come in. The broad audience of those tools and other bibliographic databases lead them to ignore cultural and geographical aspects such regional indexes, organizational structures, among others. On this poster, we introduce REDI, a Linked Data - powered research networking platform which combines both local (institutional/regional) and external (Web) scholarly sources in a consolidated knowledge base. Moreover, REDI leverages on its knowledge base to cluster authors within similar research areas easing networking and unveiling a variety of new information from data for multiple purposes.

(INSTITUTE OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERS INC., 2016-08-16) La Cruz Puente Alexandra; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Medina Molina, Ruben; Pérez Rocano, Wilson Rodrigo; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo; Solano Quinde, Lizandro Damián; Vega, F; Vidal, M.-E
Teleradiology systems tackle the problem of transferring radiological images between medical image workstations for facilitating different medical activities, e.g., diagnosis, treatment and follow up a patient, medical training, or consulting second opinion. Nowadays, m-Health (aka mobile health) is becoming popular because of high quality of mobile displays, although remains a work in progress. In this paper a mobile teleradiology system is reported, which main contribution is the development of a platform: (1) supported by a Grid infrastructure, (2) using biomedical ontologies for adding semantic annotations on medical images, and (3) supporting semantic and content-based image retrieval. Images are located physically in different repositories like; hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers. All these features make the system ubiquitous, portable, and suitable for m-Health services.

Proposal of a real time microservice architecture applied to business intelligence for the financial sector
(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Muñoz Sanchez, Tatiana Ximena; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio
This work proposes to i) generate a microservice, which allows the capture of massive transaction information from a relational database, ii) develop the extract, transform and load process (ETL), and iii) store proper and valuable information for decision-making in a non-relational database. The entire process also uses business intelligence mechanisms to convert data into information. Three phases were used for the implementation of this process: the first one, a mechanism within the relational database for change data capture (CDC)- Then, the second one, the design and implementation of a consumer in charge of listening to the messages, generate the transformation process and load it to the non-relational data-base, ensuring fault tolerance, reliability and scalability. Finally, through defined indicators, a control panel was designed, which offers operators and managers the necessary guidelines to generate decisions and measure the achievement of objectives and goals. The entire process, implemented through a visual and intuitive tool, allows converting the data into knowledge, which generates a competitive advantage in companies’ management and operational processes. The proposed integration, results in an architecture design that efficiently manages thousands of records in real-time, offering greater speed, performance, and optimization in searches of large volumes of data for effective decision-making. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Author-topic classification based on semantic knowledge
(Springer Verlag, 2019) Segarra Flores, José Luis; Sumba Toral, Francisco Xavier; Ortiz Vivar, Jose Enrique; Gualan Saavedra, Ronald Marcelo; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo
We propose a novel unsupervised two-phased classification model leveraging from semantic web technologies for discovering common research fields between researchers based on information available from a bibliographic repository and external resources. The first phase performs coarse-grained classification by knowledge disciplines using as reference the disciplines defined in the UNESCO thesaurus. The second phase provides a fine-grained classification by means of a clustering approach combined with external resources. The methodology was applied to the REDI (Semantic Repository of Ecuadorian researchers) project, with remarkable results and thus proving a valuable tool to one of the main REDI’s goals discover Ecuadorian authors sharing research interests to foster collaborative research efforts.

A Systematic Literature Review on Composition of Microservices through the Use of Semantic Annotations: Solutions and Techniques
(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2019) Chavez Zambrano, Kevin Eduardo; Cedillo Orellana, Irene Priscila; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Saquicela Galarza, Víctor Hugo
The aim of semantic web is to provide meaning to data shared by a network, therefore making it readable by humans and computer applications. The objective of this is to give the information and services a well-defined meaning by tagging web content with machine processable descriptions. Within the semantic web there are annotations, which relate data and classes offering a structured data. In addition, an ontology is an essential part of the semantic web, because it provides a vocabulary of terms and includes properties between concepts. There are several proposals over semantic annotations included in primary studies, but it is necessary to condense them in a secondary study, hence this paper presents a systematic literature review about the composition of microservices through the use of semantic annotations. This allows developers to determine which techniques are the most used in the semantic web. In order to perform this secondary study, the Kitchenham's methodology was applied. After its application, 68 articles were firstly obtained, once the inclusion and exclusion criteria was applied, only 39 studies were selected, which include automatic and manual review.

Local rainfall modelling based on global climate information: a data-based approach
(2020) Mendoza Sigüenza, Daniel Emilio; Samaniego Alvarado, Esteban Patricio; Mora Serrano, Diego Esteban; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Pacheco Tobar, Esteban Alonso; Avilés Añazco, Alex Manuel
Modelling climate is complex due to multi-scale interactions and strong nonlinearities. However, climate signals are typically quasi-periodical and are likely to depend on exogenous-variables. Motivated by this insight, we propose a strategy to circumvent modelling complexity based on the following ideas. 1) The observed signals can be decomposed into non-stationary trends and quasi-periodicities through Dynamic-Harmonic-Regressions (DHR). 2) The main-frequencies and decomposed signals can be used for constructing a harmonic model with varying parameters depending on exogenous-variables. 3) The State-Dependent-Parameter (SDP) technique allows for the dynamical estimation of these parameters. The resulting DHR-SDP combined approach is applied to rainfall- monthly modelling, using global-climate signals as exogenous-variables. As a result, 1) the model yields better predictions than standard alternative techniques; 2) the model is robust regarding data limitations and useful for several-steps-ahead forecasting; 3) interesting relations between global-climate states and the local rainfall’s sea- sonality are obtained from the SDP estimated functions.

Finding teleconnections from decomposed rainfall signals using dynamic harmonic regressions: a tropical andean case study
(2019) Mendoza Sigüenza, Daniel Emilio; Samaniego Alvarado, Esteban Patricio; Mora Serrano, Diego Esteban; Espinoza Mejía, Jorge Mauricio; Campozano Parra, Lenin Vladimir
Global climate is a multi-scale system whose subsystems interact complexly. Notably, the Tropical-Andean region has a strong rainfall variability because of the confluence of many global climate processes altered by morphological features. An approach for a synthetical climate description is the use of global indicators and their regional teleconnections. However, typically this is carried out using filters and correlations, which results in seasonal and inter-annual teleconnections information, which are difficult to integrate into a modeling framework. A new methodology, based on rainfall signal extraction using dynamic-harmonic-regressions (DHR) and stochastic-multiple-linear-regressions (SMLR) between rainfall components and global signals for searching intra-annual and inter-annual teleconnections, is proposed. DHR gives non-stationary inter-annual trends and intra-annual quasi-periodic oscillations for monthly rainfall measurements. Time-variable amplitudes of quasi-periodical oscillations are crucial for finding intra-annual teleconnections using SMLR, while trends are better suited for the case of inter-annual ones. The methodology is tested over a Tropical-Andean region in southern Ecuador. The following results were obtained: (1) trans-Niño-Index (TNI) and Tropical-South-Atlantic signals are strongly connected to inter-annual and intra-annual time-scales. (2) However, TNI progressively weakens its relation with intra-annual components; meanwhile, El-Niño-Southern-Oscillation 3 gains ground for such time-scales. (3) Finally, an inter-annual connection with the North-Atlantic-Oscillation (NAO) is revealed. These results are consistent with previous literature, although the TNI and NAO connections are interesting findings, taking into account the differences in the connected scales. These results show the methodology’s capability of unraveling global teleconnections in different space and time scales using attributes embedded in an integral mathematical framework, which could be interesting for other purposes—such as the analysis of climate mechanisms or climate modeling. © 2018, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.
