What money can-t buy: educational aspirations and international migration in Ecuador
(2020) Arias Medina, William Paúl; Rivera Ullauri, María José
This article studies how educational aspirations of children are shaped in Biblián, Ecuador, a traditional sending country. Data sources were a multi-level survey and semi-structured interviews that were analysed using logistic regression and thematic analysis, respectively. Several theoretical relationships are confirmed: the household socioeconomic status, caregiver-s educational aspirations and age are the most important variables that predict the educational aspirations of children. Child migratory dreams and the absence of the father or the mother only predict the educational aspiration of getting a high school degree, but do not predict the aspiration of a graduate degree. Thematic analysis suggests that, besides seeing education as a means to have higher incomes, mothers perceive it as a sign of social status and assign it an intrinsic value.

Approach to a wellbeing model in ecuadorian adults
(2019) Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Bueno Pacheco, Alexandra Elizabeth; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia
The aim of this study was to propose and evaluate a structural model that explains well-being as a synonym of positive mental health in Ecuadorians, taking into consideration a group of associated psychosocial variables evaluated through questionnaires. The sample included 1064 adults, inhabitants of Cuenca-Ecuador. The results were analysed with the software SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 23.0, using the generalized least squares method. Partial models were tested, the most satisfactory structural adjustment model obtained the following results; GFI=.91; AGFI=.90; RMR=.205; RMSEA=.041; CFI=.90. Three factors are included in the structure (Purpose, Positive Relationships and Growth), as well as the social well-being dimension. Self-assessment of health, self-efficacy and gratitude are important predictors of mental health while the increase of negative emotions showed a negative effect.

Psychometric properties of the resilience brief scale (BRS) in the ecuadorian
(2020) Bueno Pacheco, Gladys Alexandra; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Cabrera Vélez, María Marcela; Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The sample consisted of 657 Ecuadorian adults. We evaluated internal and construct validity, internal consistency, concurrent validity, and measurement invariance was tested across sex categories. The results show that the structure of two first order correlated factors presents adequate psychometric properties. Concurrent validity analysis shows that resilience correlates significantly with self esteem, social support and quality of life dimensions. Finally, psychometric equivalence is evidenced between the models of configural, metric, scalar and residual invariance. The BRS scale is a reliable and valid instrument for research and clinical practice purposes in the Ecuadorian context.

Emotional intelligence directly influences individual ́s personal development and could influence entrepreneurship skills as well. The objectives of this study were to assess the construct validity, internal consistency, and metric invariance of the Spanish version of the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS-S), and the Entrepreneurial Attitudes Scale for Students (EASS) and correlate the levels of emotional intelligence and entrepreneurship in a sample of university students (n=558). The validity, reliability, and invariance analysis reveal adequate goodness of fit, internal consistency and equivalence. In addition, statistically significant correlations were found between all dimensions of the scales. The Entrepreneurship and Emotional Intelligence Scales have adequate psychometric properties. In professional training, emotional intelligence acts as a decision-making ability and entrepreneurial capacity as a factor for future development

Reliability and validity of the mental health continuum (MHC-SF) in the ecuadorian contexts
(2017) Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Bueno Pacheco, Gladys Alexandra; Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Lee m Keyes, Corey; Arias Medina, William Paúl
Abstract: Health Continuum (MHC-SF) of Keyes (2009) in the Ecuadorian context. The scale was applied to two samples, one of 100 people that worked as a pilot and another of 550 people resident in the city of Cuenca-Ecuador, who also were applied an adaptation of the PERMA Profile of Butler and Kern (2016) to verify the convergent and discriminant validity. It was observed that the application in this population presents adequate levels of adjustment and high internal consistency (α=.91) and an adequate general adjustment of the structure of three factors: psychological well-being, social welfare and emotional well-being proposed by the author whose main fit values are RMSEA= .045, CFI= .996, χ2(52)= 109.048 (p= .000), GFI= .997 y TLI= 0.993. The bifactor model presents good values as well: RMSEA= .042, CFI= .996, χ2(52) = 103.040 (p= .000), GFI= .997, TLI= 0.993. We conclude that the Spanish version of MHC-SF (Keyes, 2009) and the bifactor model are appropriate tools to measure mental health in the Ecuadorian context

The Childhood Executive Functioning Inventory (CHEXI) is a widely used test in educational settings to identify deficits in Executive Functions (EF). This study aimed to adapt and evaluate the Spanish version of CHEXI in a sample of participants from Ecuador (n = 467). The study measured understanding using slightly different versions of the instrument, one initially administered to 373 participants and another with three item changes used to assess 144 new participants. Cronbach’s alpha (α) and McDonald’s omega (ω) were used to assess internal consistency. Absolute (χ²/df) and incremental fit indices (CFI, TLI, SRMR, RMSEA) evaluated construct validity. The two-factor structure of CHEXI (Working Memory and Inhibition) was successfully replicated, demonstrating a good fit and high internal consistency. The Spanish version, with the two first-order correlated factors and modifications in items 10, and 22, was deemed suitable for assessing EF in children aged 8 to 12. We found that modifying the statements improved the instrument’s psychometric properties for Ecuador.
