Publication Calidad de vida y variables asociadas: reflexiones, concepciones teóricas y los desafíos de su evaluación(Universidad de Cuenca, 2020) Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Bueno Pacheco, Gladys Alexandra; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Cabrera Vélez, María Marcela; Cordero Hermida, María Fernanda; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Racines Jerves, Daniel AndrésPublication What money can-t buy: educational aspirations and international migration in Ecuador(2020) Arias Medina, William Paúl; Rivera Ullauri, María JoséThis article studies how educational aspirations of children are shaped in Biblián, Ecuador, a traditional sending country. Data sources were a multi-level survey and semi-structured interviews that were analysed using logistic regression and thematic analysis, respectively. Several theoretical relationships are confirmed: the household socioeconomic status, caregiver-s educational aspirations and age are the most important variables that predict the educational aspirations of children. Child migratory dreams and the absence of the father or the mother only predict the educational aspiration of getting a high school degree, but do not predict the aspiration of a graduate degree. Thematic analysis suggests that, besides seeing education as a means to have higher incomes, mothers perceive it as a sign of social status and assign it an intrinsic value.Publication Psychometric properties of the resilience brief scale (BRS) in the ecuadorian(2020) Bueno Pacheco, Gladys Alexandra; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Cabrera Vélez, María Marcela; Aguilar Sizer, Mónica ElisaThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Brief Resilience Scale (BRS). The sample consisted of 657 Ecuadorian adults. We evaluated internal and construct validity, internal consistency, concurrent validity, and measurement invariance was tested across sex categories. The results show that the structure of two first order correlated factors presents adequate psychometric properties. Concurrent validity analysis shows that resilience correlates significantly with self esteem, social support and quality of life dimensions. Finally, psychometric equivalence is evidenced between the models of configural, metric, scalar and residual invariance. The BRS scale is a reliable and valid instrument for research and clinical practice purposes in the Ecuadorian context.Publication Propiedades psicométricas de las escalas de Actitudes Emprendedoras para Estudiantes y de Inteligencia Emocional de Wong y Law en una muestra de universitarios ecuatorianos.(2023) Ortiz Ochoa, William Alfredo; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Tacuri Reino, René David; Domínguez Gómez, Marcela AnaisEmotional intelligence directly influences individual ́s personal development and could influence entrepreneurship skills as well. The objectives of this study were to assess the construct validity, internal consistency, and metric invariance of the Spanish version of the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale (WLEIS-S), and the Entrepreneurial Attitudes Scale for Students (EASS) and correlate the levels of emotional intelligence and entrepreneurship in a sample of university students (n=558). The validity, reliability, and invariance analysis reveal adequate goodness of fit, internal consistency and equivalence. In addition, statistically significant correlations were found between all dimensions of the scales. The Entrepreneurship and Emotional Intelligence Scales have adequate psychometric properties. In professional training, emotional intelligence acts as a decision-making ability and entrepreneurial capacity as a factor for future developmentPublication Factor structure, invariance and psychometric properties of the rosenberg self-esteem scale in the ecuadorian context(2020) Bueno Pacheco, Alexandra; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Cabrera Vélez, María MarcelaThe aim of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE, Rosenberg, 1965) in the Ecuadorian context. The original version was evaluated along with alternative models proposed by other research in a sample of 535 adults in the city of Cuenca, Ecuador. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis show that the bifactor model has good internal consistency and adequate goodness of fit. Criterion validity was evaluated by correlating the dimensions of positive self-esteem and negative self-esteem with the subscales of the psychological domain of Quality of Life WHOQOL-BREF, Social Support of DUKE and Engagement to Life. Self-esteem measured by the RSE is essentially unidimensional and is invariant between the sex categories.Publication Factor structure, measurement invariance and psychometric properties of the Quality of Life Scale WHOQOL-BREF in the ecuadorian context(2021) Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Lima Castro, Sandra Eugenia; Bueno Pacheco, Gladys Alexandra; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Cabrera Vélez, María MarcelaBackground: The short version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) is a popular instrument used to assess quality of life. The objective of this study was to evaluate the following psychometric properties: structural validity, convergent validity, internal consistency, and measurement invariance across sex of the WHOQOL-BREF in a sample of Ecuadorian adults. Methods: We used a sample of undergraduates (n = 987) to assess the WHOQOL-BREF original four-factor structure, a model with correlated factors, a hierarchical model, and two models resulting from the exploratory factor analysis and exploratory graph analysis. All the models were evaluated using confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The results of the exploratory factor analysis and exploratory graph analysis suggest that the items are organized into four factors, although differently from the original version and the orthogonality assumption is not maintained. The confirmatory factor analysis shows that the original WHOQOL-BREF structure with correlated factors presents adequate psychometric properties. However, we propose a four-factor structure that has the best psychometric properties and adequate internal consistency. The results of the measurement invariance show that strict and strong invariance is achieved between men and women. Convergent validity analysis reveals moderate correlations with self-esteem, resilience, and social support. Conclusions: Despite the original version of the WHOQOL-BREF with correlated factors has acceptable psychometric properties in the Ecuadorian context, we propose a version with a different organization of its items, which is consistent with the findings of other investigations. Publication Approach to a wellbeing model in ecuadorian adults(2019) Aguilar Sizer, Mónica Elisa; Peña Contreras, Eva Karina; Arias Medina, William Paúl; Bueno Pacheco, Alexandra Elizabeth; Lima Castro, Sandra EugeniaThe aim of this study was to propose and evaluate a structural model that explains well-being as a synonym of positive mental health in Ecuadorians, taking into consideration a group of associated psychosocial variables evaluated through questionnaires. The sample included 1064 adults, inhabitants of Cuenca-Ecuador. The results were analysed with the software SPSS 20.0 and AMOS 23.0, using the generalized least squares method. Partial models were tested, the most satisfactory structural adjustment model obtained the following results; GFI=.91; AGFI=.90; RMR=.205; RMSEA=.041; CFI=.90. Three factors are included in the structure (Purpose, Positive Relationships and Growth), as well as the social well-being dimension. Self-assessment of health, self-efficacy and gratitude are important predictors of mental health while the increase of negative emotions showed a negative effect.
