Publication Mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach to deal with spatio-temporal water allocation(2016) Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Cattrysse, Dirk; De meyer, Annelies; Van Orshoven, JosWater of sufficient quantity and quality is indispensable for multiple purposes like domestic use, irrigated agriculture, hydropower generation and ecosystem functioning. However, in many regions of the world water availability is limited and even declining. Moreover, water availability is variable in space and time so that it does not match with the spatio-temporal use pattern of the water consumers. To overcome the temporal discrepancy between availability and consumption, reservoirs are constructed. Monitoring and predicting the water available in the reservoirs, the needs of the consumers and the losses throughout the water distribution system are necessary requirements to fairly allocate the available water for the different consumers. In this article, the water allocation problem is considered as a Network Flow Optimization Problem (NFOP) to be solved by a spatio-temporal optimization approach using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) techniques.Publication Arquitectura para una red de sensores web basada en SWE (sensor web enablement): caso de estudio para la implementación en sensores hidrometeorológicos(CEDIA, UCSG, 2017) Muñoz Guillen, Lissette Maritza; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Medina Cartuche, Jose Luis; Guillermo Anguisaca, Juan Carlos; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime EduardoThe growth of information and communication technologies associated with the needs to access immediately information generated by different sensors made the implementation and the use of communication protocols to acquire and interchange data necessary. In this sense, Sensor Web Enablement (SWE) developed by OGC (Open Geospatial Consortium) and each of its components constitute the most appropriate tool to achieve this goal. This research project proposes an architecture based in SWE that allows to access in real-time sensors belonging to a hydro-meteorological network. The architecture has been verified and validated through the implementation of a case study, using the hydrometeorological station “Marianza” located in the Azuay province; station run by PROMAS (Programa para el Manejo del Agua y el Suelo).Publication Aplicación de servicios web estándares para el monitoreo hidrometeorológico automático, integrando información de sensores diversos mediante ontologías(2018) Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Vanegas Peralta, Pablo Fernando; Estrella Maldonado, René GustavoThe last developments in worldwide technology and the continuous growth in telecommunications have resulted in the requirement to make available the information generated by a number of devices, especially for those that incorporate sensors, with the goal of reacting to any relevant events that could occur. The latest advances in this area have resulted in the development of several devices with heterogeneous types and from different vendors. This paper presents a proposal for an architecture that integrates several standard web services for the compilation, organization and storage of the information generated by a network of hydrometeorology sensors. Likewise, the paper proposes the application of standard services for controlling remotely these sensors and for managing events and generating early warnings. The aforementioned web services are some examples of the set of services that form the Sensor Web Enablement standard. Considering the diversity, both in type and vendor, that is typically found among the stations and sensors in a hydrometeorology monitoring network, this paper additionally proposes the application of ontologies with the goal of homogenizing and integrating the information coming from this diverse infrastructure.Publication From Linear Programming Model to Mixed Integer Linear Programming Model for the Simultaneous Optimisation of Water Allocation and Reservoir Location in River Systems(MDPI, 2018) Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; De meyer, Annelies; Cattrysse, Dirk; van orshoven, Jos; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime EduardoThe allocation of water flowing through a river-with-reservoirs system to optimally meet spatially distributed and temporally variable demands can be conceived as a Network Flow Optimisation (NFO) problem and addressed by Linear Programming (LP). In this paper we present an extension of the strategic NFO-LP model to simultaneously optimise the allocation of water and the location of one or more reservoirs. The applicability of the MILP model has been illustrated by applying it to a hypothetical river network configuration consisting of seven candidate reservoir nodes and seven demand nodes, and by comparing the outcome (water levels in selected reservoir, penalties) with the values obtained by the original LP-model for the same network with six reservoirs present. Publication Artificial neural networks applied to flow prediction: A use case for the Tomebamba river(Elsevier Ltd, 2016) Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Cisneros Espinoza, Felipe Eduardo ; Vanegas Peralta, Pablo Fernando; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime EduardoThe main aim of this research is to create a model based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) that allows predicting the flow in Tomebamba river, at real time and in a specific day of a year. As inputs, this research is using information of rainfall and flow of the stations along of the river. This information is organized in scenarios and each scenario is prepared to a specific area. For this article, we have selected two scenarios. The information is acquired from the hydrological stations placed in the watershed using an electronic system developed at real time and it supports any kind or brands of this type of sensors. The prediction works very good three days in advance. This research includes two ANN models: Backpropagation and a hybrid model between back propagation and OWO-HWO (output weight optimization–hidden weight optimization) to select the initial weights of the connection. These last two models have been tested in a preliminary research. To validate the results we are using some error indicators such as MSE, RMSE, EF, CD and BIAS. The results of this research reached high levels of reliability and the level of error is minimal. These predictions are useful to avoid floods in the city of Cuenca in Ecuador.Publication Optimization models used in the textile sector: a systematic review(Springer Science and Business Media Deutschland GmbH, 2022) Llivisaca Villazhañay, Juan Carlos; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Sigüenza Guzmán, Lorena Catalina; Torres Torres, Christian Marcelo; Toledo Illescas, María Belén; Peña Ortega, Mario PatricioIn recent years, several works have been published dedicated to obtaining optimization models. Many of them have been applied in the textile sector because they are part of the economic development areas of a country. This article’s main objective is to review the literature published on optimization models and understand what methods their authors used to solve the optimization problems in the textile sector. A systematic methodology was applied to select research questions, digital databases, and search terms to utilize practical and methodological filters later to carry out this systematic review. This procedure allowed performing a review and synthesis of the results obtained on the optimization models. It was found that the models resulting from the systematic review vary depending on the areas to be optimized. The most frequent applications were logistics and production, followed by cost minimization. Publication Analyzing students’ behavior in a MOOC course: a process-oriented approach(Springer Verlag, 2020) Bernal, Franklin; Maldonado Mahauad, Jorge Javier; Zúñiga Prieto, Miguel Ángel; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Mejía Pesántez, Piedad Magali; Villalba Condori, KlingeMassive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), are one of the most disruptive trends along the last 12 years. This is evidenced by the number of students enrolled since their emergence with over 101 million people taking one of the more than 11,400 MOOCs available. However, the approval rate of students in these types of courses is only about 5%. This has led to a great deal of interest among researchers in studying students’ behavior in these types of courses. The aim of this article is to explore the behavior of students in a MOOC. Specifically, to study students learning sequences and extract their behavioral patterns in the different study sessions. To reach the goal, using process mining techniques, process models of N = 1,550 students enrolled in a MOOC in Coursera were obtained. As a result, two groups of students were classified according to their study sessions, where differences were found both in the students’ interactions with the MOOC resources and in the way the lessons were approached on a weekly basis. In addition, students who passed the course repeated the assessments several times until they passed, without returning to review a video-lecture in advance. The results of this work contribute to extend the knowledge about students’ behavior in online environments.Publication Playing in the Classroom: A Game Proposal for the Flipped Classroom(IEEE, 2020) Vélez Castillo, María Belen; Verdugo Velesaca, Gabriela Alexandra; Mejía Pesántez, Piedad Magali; Veintimilla Reyes, Jaime Eduardo; Maldonado Mahauad, Jorge Javier; Maldonado Mahauad, Jorge JavierToday, gamification is a topic that is taking hold in the educational context. Institutions of Higher Education (IES) have maintained the master class as a traditional teaching method, where the teacher is the center of the learning process and his main function is to transmit information within the classroom. However, thanks to technology, didactic technological tools are currently being included to transform learning spaces and reduce low rates of academic performance. IES have begun to configure new hybrid learning environments, where they seek to incorporate gamification to motivate and keep students engaged during their learning inside and outside the classroom. The objective of this work is to present a game proposal that will be adapted in the context of a flipped class. For this, a board game is proposed that will include gamification elements, where it will seek to promote student motivation and observe the impact produced on their learning. Finally, the result was useful theoretical foundations that allow to promote the use of gamification in hybrid learning environments, to later develop an efficient and effec
