Publication Periurban urbanization and travel choice behaviour: problem or solution?(Institute of Physics Publishing, 2019) León Cabrera, Micaela Fabiana; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Hermida Palacios, María AugustaIn 21st century cities, an adequate urban design represents a great opportunity to reduce the number of trips and distances travelled. It is also known that improving city design and transportation networks could reduce carbon emissions more than replacing all fossil fuels with renewable energies. With this background, it seems fundamental to focus on the systemic relationship between urban forms and travel choices behaviours. In the case of the city of Cuenca (Ecuador,) in the last 5 years, more than 70 mono-functional urbanization and condos, many of them being gated-communities, have been built outside the urban limits. These form of urbanization is supported both by public and private promoters. Due to this situation, this research project seeks to determine the relationship between the location of these urbanizations and condos, with the travel choice behaviour of users. Geographic information systems, Q …Publication CinC Challenge 2013: Comparing three algorithms to extract fetal ECG(SPIE, 2015-11-17) Loja, J; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Medina Molina, Ruben; Palacio Baus, Kenneth Samuel; Velecela, E; Wong De Balzan, SaraThis paper reports a comparison between three fetal ECG (fECG) detectors developed during the CinC 2013 challenge for fECG detection. Algorithm A1 is based on Independent Component Analysis, A2 is based on fECG detection of RS Slope and A3 is based on Expectation-Weighted Estimation of Fiducial Points. The proposed methodology was validated using the annotated database available for the challenge. Each detector was characterized in terms of its performance by using measures of sensitivity, (Se), positive predictive value (P+) and delay time (td). Additionally, the database was contaminated with white noise for two SNR conditions. Decision fusion was tested considering the most common types of combination of detectors. Results show that the decision fusion of A1 and A2 improves fQRS detection, maintaining high Se and P+ even under low SNR conditions without a significant tdincrease.Publication An open source SCADA system to implement advanced computer integrated manufacturing(IEEE COMPUTER SOCIETY, 2016-12-01) Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Ochoa, S; Velecela, EThe computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) approach allows the possibility to remotely and optimally control the entire production process in a plant. The implementation of CIM architectures demands the installation of several software platforms, which most of the cases are commercial and have high licensing prices. This research presents the development of an open software architecture for advanced CIM (OSACIM) by using two open software development platforms: Java and Python. The use of open software in the development of this solution allows the creation of a low price CIM approach. The results of using the system in laboratory tests show good results in comparison with commercial softwares for developing OPC communications and SCADA systems, which perform similar functionalities as the proposed OSACIM. The main features and limitations of the system are reported.Publication Evaluating the mindwave headset for automatic upper body motion classification(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Palacio Baus, Kenneth Samuel; Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael; Vázquez Rodas, Andrés Marcelo; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin FabiánThis paper presents preliminary results on evaluating the NeuroSky Mindwave headset for upper body motion intention classification. An artificial neural network (ANN) is trained by using a data set built for two different feature extraction methods, one based on the wavelet transform (WT) and another based on the use of spectrograms. Since there are five different types of brain waves,(α, β, γ, Δ, θ) some data aggregation procedures are proposed to reduce the dimensionality of the data set. The classification results show that it is possible to attain a 73.1% of assertion rate. © 2017 IEEE.Publication Redes 5G: una revisión desde las perspectivas de arquitectura, modelos de negocio, ciberseguridad y desarrollos de investigación(2021) Aranda, Juan; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Haro Mendoza, Daniel; Sacoto Cabrera, Erwin5G technology is transforming our critical networks, with long-term implications. Since 5G is transitioning to a purely software-based network, potential improvements will be software updates, like how smartphones are upgraded. For the global enterprise, the 5G arrival would be disruptive. Long-awaited solutions to various flaws in critical networking systems will arise due to 5G network adoption. Furthermore, the shortcomings of technology in contributing to business growth and success would be turned on their heads. The more complicated part of the actual 5G race is retooling how we protect the most critical network of the twenty-first century and the ecosystem of devices and applications that sprout from that network due to cyber software vulnerabilities. The new technologies enabled by new applications running on 5G networks have much potential. However, as we move toward a connected future, equal or more attention should be paid to protecting those links, computers, and applications. We address critical aspects of 5G standardization and architecture in this article. We also provide a detailed summary of 5G network business models, use cases, and cybersecurity. Furthermore, we perform a study of computer simulation methods and testbeds for the research and development of potential 5G network proposals, which are elements that are rarely addressed in current surveys and review articles.Publication Registrador de datos pluviométricos basado en el microcontrolador ATMEL y el transceptor LoRa(2020) Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael; Vázquez Rodas, Andrés Marcelo; Piedra Orellana, Kevin Samuel; Lupercio Novillo, Luis GeovanyThe water and soil program PROMAS of the University of Cuenca contributes to the sustainable management of water and soil resources. To carry out this task, PROMAS requires, among others, to monitor environmental parameters using meteorological stations. In the present work, a rainfall data logger was developed on a compact printed circuit board (PCB) using surface mount components. LoRaWAN/ LoRa technology is used to transmit the information. LoRa is one of the LPWAN low power, long range network technologies. LoRaWAN is a protocol that manages end-to-end communication. This development integrates the acquisition, storage and transmission of data. The architecture is made up of a gateway device, the network server, and sensor nodes distributed over the area of interest. The data logger has the additional function of downloading data on-site using WiFi technology. The tests carried out showed that the developed prototype worked correctly in the acquisition, transmission and storage of dataPublication Open source SCADA system for advanced monitoring of industrial processes(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Merchán Piedra, Daniel Felipe; Peralta Sisalima, Jonnathan Antonio; Vázquez Rodas, Andrés Marcelo; Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Merchán Piedra, Daniel FelipeModern industries demand reliable supervision and control of every process involved in the manufacturing. Computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) systems provide a reference frame for integrating the majority of entities of an automation process by using computers to control production systems. Integrating a fully operational CIM system implies high costs of licenses of specialized automation software, which limits its penetration to low and medium size industries. This paper presents the development of an open source supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system by using the general purpose programming platform, Python. The SCADA system offers communication capabilities through an open source OPC-UA server, which solves data exchange with control devices such as PLC, PAC, etc. The system also provides fault-tolerance features thanks to the implementation of an active fault tolerant …Publication A simple reliable wireless bus design for home automation systems(Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc., 2018) Flores, Pablo; Moscoso Martínez, Marlon; Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael; Vázquez Rodas, Andrés Marcelo; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Minchala Ávila, Luis IsmaelThis paper presents the design and development of a simple wireless bus for domotics (WBD). The architecture of the bus is based on a classical master/multi-slave configuration, where the beginning of any task in the network is initiated by the master unit. The proposed domotic bus shows a reliable performance thanks to the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) algorithm configured in a modified Modbus frame. The commands’ speed response of the proposed bus is increased in comparison with other domotic standards, such as X10, ZigBee, and LonWorks, which offers an affordable, yet reliable self-configurable network solution for home automation solutions (HAS).Publication Low cost lower limb exoskeleton for assisting gait rehabilitation: design and evaluation(Association for Computing Machineryacmhelp@acm.org, 2019) Vázquez Rodas, Andrés Marcelo; Astudillo Salinas, Darwin Fabián; Blandín Segarra, Jonnathan Mauricio; Velasco Gordillo, Anthony Javier; Minchala Ávila, Luis Ismael© 2019 Association for Computing Machinery. This paper presents the design and implementation of a low cost, yet robust, three degrees of freedom (DoF) lower limb exoskeleton intended to assist patients in gait rehabilitation. The majority of patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries (SCI) are able to walk after a rehabilitation process. Among the broad options of physical rehabilitation therapies, there is a relatively recent interest in those assisted by robotic exoskeletons, due to features as high precision movements and automated repetitions. In this context, the subsystems of the exoskeleton prototype described throughout this paper are the following: i) a controlled area network (CAN) communications bus with SDO protocol; and, ii) a hierarchical control system consisting of two levels: a trajectory generator of the walk biomechanics implemented in a centralized controller (CC), and distributed controllers (DC) installed at each joint of the exoskeleton. The multiplication mechanical system uses reduction speed boxes based on cycloidal and planetary gears. Experimental results of the prototype operating, with and without carrying weight, show effectiveness of the whole control system for tracking a non-pathological gait biomechanics trajectory.Publication PRAVDA: Pseudo random network coding in vanet for data download(IEEE COMPUTER SOCIETY, 2014-11-12) Astudillo Salinas, Darwin FabiánThis paper introduces PRAVDA, a new approach for infrastructure based content distribution in a vehicular network. PRAVDA is built on broadcasting and pseudo random network coding. Its first strength is that, being broadcast based, it does not need any feedback channel and thus consumes very little throughput. Data is transmitted through network coding: multiple linear combinations of data are sent. A vehicle needs to receive a defined number of independent linear combinations to decode the data. The server will send a larger number of different linear combinations. The unreliability of broadcast is thus fought through a useful redundancy rather than through re-transmission. Finally, computation of the linear combination coefficients is done so that the overhead is the same as it would be without network coding.
